i would totally pay to become a Gaf GoldMember, especially if you could have animated sigs and custom tages and stuff (<1 MB to keep things sane). been working on a pretty cool one in photoshop that i'd love to bust out and it's just too annoying to do tags after every post. can they do sound too? think i saw that somewhere.

anyway, might be the best solution--the Mods should consider it imo.[/QUOTE]How is it possible to love you any more than I do already

You're joking, right? There'd be mass hysteria. Evilore would have to fear for his life (well, okay, he'd probably only have to fear hackers, but you get the point).

OTers can be scary when they're angry.
You do realize this happens every year? =)
It's fun times. They just have to make a thread for girl threads, sports threads, anime threads, and miscellaneous threads. OTers can use that for the week or two =)

Me thinks, AstroLad is due for a tag, as people still fall for his replies.

I have never seen a tag suggestion work, even by a third party. Aren't tags more "spur of the moment" things?

:lol that's why i like my idea where the elite members get to make their own tags. fwiw mine would be "Hail to the KING baby" but it's only really funny if you see the sig i made to go with it, which is basically the burger king spliced into scenes from Evil Dead. :lol

By "bandaid" I mean that adding more ram should completely address the errors for now, but not in the long term since the database will keep on growing. Along with the forthcoming structural database changes there are a number of options here, like splitting the older section of the database off into an archive area so the active main database is small but the complete history (since the catastrophe, so june 2004 on) can still be accessed, but a lot of ways of implementing this are less than ideal.

As far as closing the OT temporarily for E3, that's always on the table, yes, since it tends to work pretty well when we reach the absolute limit (like during Big 3 conferences).
Can you explain this or is there a thread?

Pretty sure I got mine based on a "collection of post/threads annoying Wii owners." So not always spur-o-the-moment. :D

Plenty of forums allow these things, and usually the first thing I do is turn them all off. (Smallish) picture sigs I have no problems with, but when you start getting into animated sigs it just gets stupid, and custom tags are honestly kinda pointless. I'm pretty sure you're kidding since you mention sound though, and no sane person wants that. A mod at another board once tested that out by putting One-Winged Angel into every single thread, let's just say it didn't last long :lol :lol

I always thought...

Member → Junior Member → Custom

But apparently it's...

Junior Member → Member → Custom

How/when does the "Junior" tag get applied?

All hail EvilLore. Signatures of any kind belong in hell (or GameFAQs).
And I'm against custom tags (not imposed by mods I mean) as well, I know I'm never getting one and neither should you.

Also, this:

Short version:

At that time GAF was hosted by the Gamesquad network. We had our long-time moderation staff and were autonomous in that respect, but Gamesquad had control over the server and revenue/advertisements. As GAF grew the server they provided didn't (P4 1.4 with 512mb ram, I think it was) and vbulletin didn't get updated either. Awash in a sea of spyware-laden ads and extreme performance problems, in May 2004 a popular Puzzledonkey thread in the OT forum grew too large and corrupted the database. As there were no backups, the database was lost and the Gamesquad iteration of GAF was dead. I rallied support among the former userbase via donations and used the money to restart GAF as an independent entity the next month.

I have GAF set to display 100 post pages, not 50. Imagine if every poster had an approx 1 meg signature, in addition to their avatars.

That would make clicking 1 thread load over 100 megs of data. Mental.

Anyway, it's bad enough reading page upon page of mindless drivel, but having to put up with peoples terrible artistic abilities too ?

Fuck that off.

Huh, everyone is a junior member when they first start out :P

I'd pay to not see that kind of thing.

It took me around three to five minutes to load up NG on my ITouch and then I got that screen. :lol

Needless to say but I'm glad you're still around.

I've always wondered, does the money going to GAF's owner just barely make up for the associated costs or what?

Zenith said:
didn't one of the admins say they invested in some new servers a while back?

they haven't helped.

we've been having 500 errors all year round, not just busy times when there's been a major announcement.
GAF's up to 16 cores right now iirc.

ah, ok. fair enough. There's plenty of time to fix the database issues after E3.

100% agreed.

Fireblend said:
Yeah... no. I hardly post in the gaming section. If anything the gaming side should be closed, that way we don't even have to worry about all this silly E3 thing.
(laughs)

As much as some people seem to enjoy the OT discussions on GAF, the less important subforums should be closed when it helps stabilise the main forum.

Until recently the requirement was 150 posts or 150 days since registration. A while back I changed it to 200 posts *and* 60 days since registration, so those times are over.

What the hell is Puzzledonkey?

EviLore said:
It's not that the servers can't handle the this level of traffic, it's that the database size exceeded RAM again. This was supposed to be addressed via database changes but that's been put on hold, so I'll be bandaiding it with a RAM increase to the database server to ensure that there won't be a catastrophic failure during E3.

Yes, it's EXTREMELY annoying, and it's not going to stay this way. Don't worry and try to be patient.

Official w00t!

Did Astrolad just tag himself? :lol Only Astrolad.
Well will you look at that? Good for Astrolad I guess.

Doesn't sit well with me though. It really only encourages other people to deliberately post stupid crap in order to get tagged. And you know they do it, too. Remember that Aztrex guy? Greatness Gone? Titiklabingapat?

If being "famous" or "special" on the Internet is your goal, more power to you, but why go out of your way to embarrass yourself for such a tiny thing as though it's a badge of honour? I remember when I had a thread backfire on me, I really did start to worry that I'd get an embarrassing tag on account of it. Luckily though, it wasn't as bad as all that and the thread died a quiet death.
