500 - Internal Server Error

Status
Not open for further replies.
Wth is up with the forums these past few weeks, 500 errors constantly, anyone including the mods have any answers? This will NOT work out well come E3.

The boards are just more active than usual because of E3 coming up. The server can't handle it. This happens every year doesn't it?

I was here for last E3 and 500 errors didn't appear until E3 came around, not weeks before it.

Just the servers.

Although the site does seem to die around 6pm AUS time everyday, im guessing thats when a DB backup is performed or something.

Its been happening for months I thought its just something we were supposed to be used to by now~

Ditto. I think Evilore said before that it was just some database stuff going on, but that was a while ago and this is pretty annoying :( Why can't we have a fundraiser or something?

I heard the framerate was better on the 360 verssion.
Seriously, this should be in off topic, I'm tired of this seperate boards. seperate worlds bullshit.

I've been getting these constantly for about 2-3 weeks now. Either that pops up, or it takes forever to load pages (i.e. several minutes). It's never been like this this far ahead of E3, I'm expecting this place to completely crash and burn during E3 and get my news elsewhere, there's no way it can handle it if it's already having these kinds of problems.

This post took about two minutes to post, and definitely not an internet issue on my end :(

I was thinking of posting this in the OT forum, but since I'm a strictly Gaming poster only, an exception should be made for this thread since it affects both OT and Gaming forum.

i would totally pay to become a Gaf GoldMember, especially if you could have animated sigs and custom tages and stuff (<1 MB to keep things sane). been working on a pretty cool one in photoshop that i'd love to bust out and it's just too annoying to do tags after every post. can they do sound too? think i saw that somewhere.

anyway, might be the best solution--the Mods should consider it imo.

So I saw a thread titled:
500 - Internal Server Error

So I decided to click on it, and

500 - Internal Server Error

I 500'd trying to look at this thread :lol

I dunno how the hell we're gonna make it through E3. Isn't there about twice as many members as last year now?

I don't think that's necessary. Evilore apparently makes enough that he doesn't have to have another job.

It's not that the servers can't handle the this level of traffic, it's that the database size exceeded RAM again. This was supposed to be addressed via database changes but that's been put on hold, so I'll be bandaiding it with a RAM increase to the database server to ensure that there won't be a catastrophic failure during E3.

Yes, it's EXTREMELY annoying, and it's not going to stay this way. Don't worry and try to be patient.

Thanks for the answer, hopefully you get it up to scratch in time for E3. I really love GAF during E3 and having this problem while it's on will seriously kill the whole thing for me.

You're a gun

What's way more annoying and frequent for me is that sometimes pages just won't load, or only do so after a minute of waiting. Mostly happens when you want to post or edit. I had it with this post too

Time to close the OT.

Damn. No way to make these database changes before E3 comes around?

I still say close the OT, just to be on the safe side.

Are you sure the site will hold up during E3? I can imagine it exploding :P

And this is why we lov...err, like you so much. I mean, with you in charge, it's almost worth a bit of difficulty.

Its been like this for a long time. This site has a lot of traffic, and its popularity is growing.

Expect a lot more come E3!

You're joking, right? There'd be mass hysteria. Evilore would have to fear for his life (well, okay, he'd probably only have to fear hackers, but you get the point).

OTers can be scary when they're angry.

Yeah... no. I hardly post in the gaming section. If anything the gaming side should be closed, that way we don't even have to worry about all this silly E3 thing.

Sweetness.

almost as scary as goth Diablo 3 fans or Too Human trolls.

It's only bad for me during peak times, 6-11pm EST. Other than that it's still pretty snappy.

I've had this happen to me in the early morning hours, 3-4 est. Those living in the eastern side of the world maybe? I dunno.

By "bandaid" I mean that adding more ram should completely address the errors for now, but not in the long term since the database will keep on growing. Along with the forthcoming structural database changes there are a number of options here, like splitting the older section of the database off into an archive area so the active main database is small but the complete history (since the catastrophe, so june 2004 on) can still be accessed, but a lot of ways of implementing this are less than ideal.

As far as closing the OT temporarily for E3, that's always on the table, yes, since it tends to work pretty well when we reach the absolute limit (like during Big 3 conferences).

All GAFers should chip in to have a unlimited HDD Data Server Size that can hold the amount of post, traffic, etc I'm willing to donate to a GAF fund if it ever gets set up for it. GAF is a wonderful community and sooner or later, it will outgrow it's capacity again, with more members. Who knows, GAF could rival IGN with it's network of traffic that it receives everyday, and might make sense to make the forums have some kind of Insider, albeit like $5 or something, not the outrageous IGN fee.

didn't one of the admins say they invested in some new servers a while back?

they haven't helped.

we've been having 500 errors all year round, not just busy times when there's been a major announcement.

I thought Neogaf was a gaming forum.
