6 overhyped 2011 games that probably won't deliver

Portal 2 lol. They basically judged it off of the coop marketing; the two cute robots.

And wow at saying that LA Noire marketing impacts development.

Portal had a T rating but even then it was pretty tame for a T in terms of actual content. Did the E10+ rating exist when Portal came out? I could definitely see it being able to get that if it was around.

It did.

Ever since the game's announcement, we've been bombarded with LA Noire marketing material: screenshots, trailers, concept art... it seems like every day there's something new coming out. And that worries us, to be honest — shouldn't Rockstar be concentrating on, y'know, the game itself? And you know what they say — once bitten, twice shy: after the intense disappointment that was Mafia 2, we're no longer confident any new guns-'n'-gangsters game can stand up to our fond memories of the original Mafia.

It's almost as if R* has several departments...why, they may even have a marketing department!

It's just as well Driver has no hype. Game looked rough as hell at E3. I really want it to be good...but...Tanner, in a coma, switching from car to car...?

Relfections have been at the wacky baccy again.

Who is hyped by the new Driver? Seriously, WTF?

Heck, L.A. Noire a "guns-'n'-gangsters" game competing with Mafia?

Ah, the only thing I could think of that took it up to a T was the blood splatter when Chell got hit. I assume that's gone. I think the dark undertones will still be in though, some of the drawings I've seen on the wall were pretty screwed up and more graphic than in the first.

Diablo 3 is already vastly different (and better than imo :P) from Diablo 2. Another hits-baiting list.

And Portal 2? Really? If there is another game coming out this year that I KNOW will deliver, it's portal 2. Valve does not disappoint.

My list would be:

1. Skyrim
2. The Old Republic
3. Duke Nukem Forever

Where is Mass Effect 3?

I agree with The Old Republic, though.

WTF @ Portal 2 and Diablo 3?

I mean c'mon, we're talking about Valve and Blizzard.

I wonder why they seem to think the developers are marketing this game, as opposed to say, the marketing team/dprt.

I didn't even know half these games were overhyped though.

Fake Edit - Dammit, X26, why are you so fast?

LA Noire is a rockstar game, the media won't let it fail (ratings wise at least).

I agree with Duke Nukem, the game looks terrible but it's getting attention because it's Duke. I don't know anyone who's cared about Driver since the playstation 1 days.

I'm glad LA Noire has received the same kind of marketing push that RDR got. It's a great way of advertising, if you ask me. It's the least offensive sort and actually informs you about the story, development process, etc. all at the same time. It's great.

The Diablo III deal is the only one I got. I have a few friends that though SC2 was too much of the same, though it's still good fun. I feel that DIII is going to have the same problem when it releases. It will be great, but Blizzard might play it very safe.

Holy fuck at that Portal 2 bit. XD

These guys aren't even worth any time or attention.

I actually expected to see Rage listed. Of that list Duke probably won't live up to most peoples hype but it'll probably be good enough.

Buying both these games no matter what anyway.

I seem to remember playing through Portal on my 360 in addition to my PC. But no, I'm surely crazy and Portal could never work on a console without dumbing it down. Yep, Valve's just throwing away their biggest fans for a cash grab.

Driver? Who honestly expects anything from Driver?
This.

While I think the gameplay for Portal 2 will totally deliver, it (most likely) won't have the same impact of the first game. Their reasons are completely ridiculous and not what I was expecting at all though. I always have to roll my eyes when I see the words "kiddy" and "dumbed down" thrown around.

It's gone because you control robots, not humans. You can be a lot of violent with a robot and still remain in lighthearted slapstick territory.

I doubt it, but we'll see. I won't mind personally, but I know some people will.

Don't even list the source. They don't deserve the hits. I'm sure this topic is a hot topic at N4G now, though.

LA Noire doesn't give the impression to be anything at all like the Mafia-Series, so maybe thats not the best comparsion. I still fear it will probably dissapoint: too easy on the adventure part, too stale on the action. Given the impressive technology, unusual setting, and probable good storytelling and characters its still gonna be a impressive expirience I think. Hope I'll be wrong about the first part.

What have Valve said about playing Portal 2 solo? Does it stand on it's own if you don't have a buddy?
The single player is the story mode. The coop doesn't use the story from the story mode.

They have some points, IMO. I can see The Old Republic sucking, for example, from all that we've seen about the game.

I agree with this list. Portal 2 looks pretentious, redundant, and contrived. The first one was a fluke, and surely this one will be a half-baked cash in.

Of course I am lying. Back-asswards list.

Wait, they're saying TOR's graphics will be crap right after hours of footage were put up on Youtube from PAX? Holy shit this article is dumb.

Fucking horrible list/write-up. This was just generated to gather hits to their website, thanks for taking the time to put it all in the OP so I didn't contribute to their site.

They're half right about Portal 2. They're definitely going mass market in terms of theme. The first one had some dark undertones, but the sequel is deliberately aimed at an E for Everyone ESRB rating. The videos definitely reflect the "lighter" theme. I don't think they will compromise on the gameplay though.
Most of the 'dark undertones' of the first one wasn't even made visible for the most part until the last third of the game, let alone the pre-release marketing!

Too early to judge.

Well IMO Dragon Age II, DC Universe Online and Homefront are already 3 mega-hyped duds of 2011. I'm worried that trend will continue throughout the year. 2011 back in late 2010 looked stacked, but so far it's been kind of meh outside of Dead Space 2 and LittleBigPlanet 2.

Portal 2 and LA Noire will be amazing. As will The Last Guardian which I expected to see in the list.

Shadows of the Damned, Alice 2, Duke Nukem Forever, Rage, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 I expect to be middling.

Deus Ex 0 I'm concerned about, that could be a let down.

Look, we know this is going to be controversial. But we just think that Portal 2 is going to be the difficult second album. Now that it's being tailored for consoles as well as PCs, and it's getting the mass-market treatment, we think Portal 2 is going to be dumbed down and cutesier than the original. Don't get us wrong, we'll play it, but we just think it's going to be aimed at the kiddy, easy-to-play market. We're holding out hope to be surprised, but let's be honest - does anyone else remember how bad Call of Duty 3 was on the Wii? Once the mainstream market picks up on what used to be an original concept, it messes it up.
There is not enough "wat" to describe my reaction to this.

Ah, hell with it. I'll say it. I'm not that convinced on Portal 2 either. Nothing they have shown me has convinced me much either. It has next to no buzz on top of that. I'm not saying its going to be a bad game, just won't live up to...well, whatever hype Valve fans will give it. I think it'll sell wonderfully on Steam, but less so on consoles (SOCOM 4 and Mortal Kombat come out on the same day...).

Diablo 3 isn't coming out this year, so, no comment there. Duke Nukem is a carnival show. No one in their right mind expects anything good, but I think they just want to poke fun at the fact that it'll finally be out. No one cares about Driver. TOR is a big question mark. Especially coming off Dragon Age 2 (yes, I know there are different studios within Bioware, but there are still many questions there). LA Noire? Well, cut through the usual Rockstar stupid levels of bullshit hype and I'm not sure what we have. Team Bondi is unproven and The Gateaway was 9 years ago.

This is an awful piece because of the reasons stated though.
