8 things you need to know about Gran Turismo Sport

The thing is, that I fully expect this to sell like crazy, based solely on the back of it being a new full(-priced) Gran Turismo game, and the PS4 being the dominant console of the generation.

The marketing seems like they want to have their cake and eat it, with it being pitched simultaneously as a spin-off to Gran Turismo, focused solely on perfecting the multiplayer racing experience, and it being Gran Turismo 7 in all but name, with all the features you expect from previous games, including a fully-featured campaign mode. If enough people are buying the game expecting the latter, then I think there could be a sizeable backlash on the cards that might not be fully evident until Gran Turismo Sport 2 gets released.

If the full release performs anything like the beta did, you're in for a treat.

Man, I sincerely hope so! I guess I just need to get over the fact that this isn't GT7, and embrace it for what it is. I just loved GT for so long, and, it was never for it's online component.

Lacking single player content = Pass

I'll get Project Cars 2 and or The Crew 2 for my driving fix

Hopefully Sony learnt their lesson not to skimp on single player content next time and add it all back in GT 8

What is campaign mode usually like in GT games?

I was thinking of making this my first Gran Turismo, but now I'm not so sure.

it's coming out in a month, but it doesn't feel like there's much hype around it.

There isn't much for me to get excited about. This game looks kind of like GT X Driveclub and I'm not sure who was asking for that. Sony's racing games have been kinda crap this gen.

I liked Driveclub for the different road track locations around the world, I want a game that lets me do that without ultra serious online junk being the core of the game. I don't actually care what my world wide ranking is, that isn't why I play games.

The Forza: Horizon games are maybe what I'm looking for, too bad there is nothing on PS like that. Maybe The Crew 2 will have some more locations than just the boring USA. Or maybe I'll pick up a used OG x1 for cheap.

Ok, I'm really out, not paying full price for a racing game with a 'campaign' like that.

Project CARS 2 and Forza Motorsport 7 for me it is.

Usually an overarching series of events / championships and cups calling on different types of cars, which you have to purchase and upgrade using your winnings.

It's not Sony making the game. It's that crazy fucker Kaz and his bizarre ways.

Will wait for the community reaction for this one.

Also, Driveclub spoiled me to this day.

If Kaz and PD have deluded themselves into thinking that this no-effort attempt at a career mode (which is simply a set of license challenges as per previous games) is acceptable going forwards then I think they're in for an extremely rude awakening.

Of all the driving game enthusiasts I know, all of them adore GT as a series and all of them love GT for the career mode. By all means call GTS a spin-off and go back to the "meat and potatoes" career mode in a full GT7 later on, but to call this poor excuse for single-player content a full numbered GT release is an outright insult to the fans of the series. I just hope that this isn't going to be the mould that GT takes going forwards.

The single player component is basically just the GT Academy thing. Hardly what I expected when they first announced the campaign mode. It seems that they are completely focussing on eSports with this which kills my interest in it. I'd rather take Forza 7, but without Win10 or an XB1 I guess I'm sticking with GT6 for the foreseeable future.

PS Plus will only be needed for the online multiplayer, portions of the Arcade Mode, including limited two-player split screen, single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline
single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline
Hot garbage.

It's because they've included all the typical GT license bullshit along with the amazing graphics and not put in any actual offline game career.

Odd statement indeed. No way they'll lock you out of a track though.

Why word it that way if they really mean that all (downloaded/purchased) tracks are available all the time when off-line? Why lock out "select" tracks for on-line only? This is insane.

I'm still in the "gonna buy it" bucket, but I'd guess they expect well-deserved backlash at this point. The pitch for GTS has been really poor, and manifestly confusing, considering how easy it is to string together "dueling quotes" about it from official communications. The "cute" posturing Yamauchi shared (or was asked to share) in interviews about this being akin to a GT7, and not having lost any features, etc is just poor form.

I want the best possible experience, even if it means removing trouble areas, but this is something else. I'm a less confident in how this will turn out, seeing their own damage control in an article like this. I expect this from insecure fans, not through the publisher's communications. Fingers crossed.

It has no offline career mode. The online will essentially be a race calendar with tiered events, specialist races, and invitationals.
Yeah I'm not being critical of what it has to offer, it sounds good. But GT was built around the career mode, I'd definitely say it's the core appeal, or at least for many. So for me this isn't a proper GT

Maybe it's talking about user generated tracks? Weren't GT6 custom tracks only usable online? (still wouldn't justify Plus subscription though)

Would be cool to know if course maker is in, since they said "no feature is being left behind"

The single player component is basically just the GT Academy thing. Hardly what I expected when they first announced the campaign mode.
Please let's stop with this crap.

From the first reveal it was clear it wasn't a normal career mode
(plus this from the very same May 2016 event: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/thre...ure-single-player-career-events-races.346416/ )

How could anybody look at this and think "ohhhh, cups and championships and endurance races must surely be hidden there somewhere!", I don't know.

It's fine wanting a tradiditional career, I'm not disputing that - but I swear, this campaign mode was the only clear thing from the reveal... as opposed to the weather, day/night change, livery editor, tuning, etc. that we only learned more about in the following months up to this summer.
Lol

I'd like to know if "matchmaking" for online races, apart the values stated in the OP, takes in consideration if the user is using a recing wheel or gamepad.

I rarely have the time to plug the racing wheel these days and i would like to avoid to be put ad disadvantage for this.

I know it is a different game, but Driveclub actually played better with a pad in my experience. Maybe they compensate so there is no disadvantage in GT.

Damn, wtf are PD thinking releasing that Single player mode 4 years into the PS4 life cycle? I'd rather a GT6 port at this point.

As you said, Driveclub is not a fitting example. GT sport beta changes a lot when driven witht a decent wheel, in my opinion, expecially with the more powerful cars, it's much more easer ( and fastest ).

IDK either. But I suppose maybe they see it as a more profitable route. Multiplayer games are the ones where non-gameplay affecting microtransactions like hats sell. They are also the games with the longest longevity, so if you are into that they are way better value. And by focusing just on that, they make the experience better.

But 4 years does seem like a long time, especially given the fact that Microsoft has put out 8(?) Forza games in that time with campaigns.

Makes sense, given it is more of a sim.

I find it insulting to longtime GT fans to call that joke "Campaign mode".

I've been following this series since day 1 but i'm not interested at all in Polyphony's or Sony's vision to turn GT to an e-sports-only crap.

I think i'll buy Project Cars 2 instead.

The campaign mode this year is way bigger than previous GT.

Is Playstation Plus needed in order to play split-screen? Is that correct?
The text says it is not.

"portions of the Arcade Mode, including limited two-player split screen, single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline".

It says portions because Arcade two-players online you can't play without Plus.

In order to ensure fair racing for all, GT Sport will require an internet connection for the majority of functionality. This connectivity requirement is to ensure that progress, car availability and driver ratings are properly maintained at all times.

This doesn’t mean you’ll need PlayStation Plus though. As with all PlayStation titles, PS Plus will only be needed for the online multiplayer, portions of the Arcade Mode, including limited two-player split screen, single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline.

This sentence got mangled. I'd assume they used a comma instead of a period.

It should very likely read, "As with all PlayStation titles, PS Plus will only be needed for the online multiplayer. Portions of the Arcade Mode, including limited two-player split screen, single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline."

Oh, I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just amused at it being a selling point in this list.

Like, yeah, I'd certainly *hope* your matchmaking is good, as I would any other online game.

I made this post elsewhere to someone making the same bogus point as you:

"The thing is you're kind of jumping off the false premise that having a solid online experience, in 2017, is expected, trivial, or simply what all the other franchises have. This ignores the actual reality of online racing - cheats, rammers, unbalanced cars, tune exploits, and so on. I have never played a racing game online where you can get a decent experience without organising things outside of the game. Gran Turismo Sport is intended to provide a decent experience without the need for outside leagues. Whether it will succeed is an open question, but if does succeed it will be the first game to do so."

You would have to be massively ignorant or massively disingenuous to state that what GT Sport is offering online is bog standard.

Even if it is...it's not what most want. Doing these mini challenges is dull and not good enough for me.

So nervous about this one. :( I have the LE preordered at Best Buy, but every time I read about the so-called Campaign mode, I get the urge to cancel. I do feel like I would have way more fun with Forza 7 earlier in October anyway, but I also want to play this on my Pro, just to see it for myself. Will be watching impressions/reviews very closely.

I would really like for them to stop calling it Campaign mode. I can respect that they want to shift the focus of the franchise, it's their money, their game.

What I don't like is being lied to, and calling that a campaign is lying unless you've never played a GT before. It's like, instead of addressing the elephant in the room, they choose to cover it. It's still there, we can see it guys, stop pretending.

And this post being official brings down any remaining hope that I could have of a surprise announcement at TGS.

I need near faultless 60FPS from PD this time, I can't accept what happened in the PS3 era.

I think Polyphony Digital need a new translator or typist.

Is Takayuki Nushida still available?
