gravity had excellent camera work and particle effects

pacific rim was more throw a bunch of water everywhere and make it dark at all times with bright colors coming into play in one or two scenes

I'd say Gravity did, but the problem with visual effects is that it's all very subjective. See The Golden Compass.

Still, Pacific Rim not getting nominated is sad as hell.
