Aksys just posted this on their Facebook page:

Midnight. 9/9 only. ‪#‎999iOS‬ for $0.99. #999 ‪#‎ZeroEscape‬ ‪#‎VLR‬ ‪#‎visualnovel‬

Riddle me if old.

Will buy, I've been meaning to get around to 999.

I've already played Virtue's Last Reward and platinumed it. Yes I'm a monster.

I would be all over this, but doesn't this version cut out all the puzzles? Are the puzzles fun? And I heard that the DS version uses the dual screens in interesting ways as well?

Is their any major differences in this and the DS version? Also, if its optimized for 5 and I have a 4S will I still be able to play it?

You should play it on DS if you have the chance. The fact that you play it on that platform is core to the gaming experience if you are intent on seeing everything the game has to offer

I just beat this for the first time a few days ago. The puzzle rooms can get kind of repetitive, but the story makes it one of the most gripping games I have ever played. A must buy for those who like a good story.

I'm really disappointed that there's no puzzles, and not playing it on the DS first really loses a lot of the best elements, but I'll buy it on iOS because it's a good price and they need that money.

I can't really be arsed with the DS version, but I hear the iOS version ruins a few things story wise. Without going into specifics, is the damage serious? I already own this version but I've not properly gotten into it yet.

Yes. Also I can imagine missing the puzzles really takes a bite out of the overall impact of the game. The game was tailored for the DS down to the core of the story.

Speaking of, I never played this one, but curious enough about it... is it possible to download Zero Escape on the Vita?

Also is it worth playing if you didn't play the 1st one?

Virtue's Last Reward is downloadable on the Vita. It was even a PS+ game at one point.

It's worth playing (worth it for Zero Jr.'s voice acting alone), but you'll get more out of it if you played the original as it's a sequel.

Yes, I believe it to be. The fact you are not playing it on its original platform very important in this case. It is not just silly porting problems at fault here, there is more.that is affected.

I would recommend playing the first game if you want to play the sequel.

"This app is optimized for iPhone 5."

Damn, mine is 4. :(
I think that just means that it's also been optimised for the different aspect ratio, not necessarily that it will only work from that point forward.
Check the description/reviews, because oftentimes all that "optimized for iPhone 5" means is that it has been updated for it's launch.

Ah, I was told this. Thanks for the second opinion, will try to get ahold of the DS version if I can

I have a 4S and the game appears to run perfectly fine from what I played of it.

I would get on this but I should probably just get it for my DS finally. Been holding off on that way too long and I loved VLR. I'm mad at myself playing them out of order :(

Eh... I hope I don't need to buy this just to show my support for the series, because that's really all I'd be buying it for. I've already played the DS version. (It's fantastic btw)

Bought. I have VLR on Vita but haven't played 999 yet.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE

It's not universal, you can always still play the iphone version on the ipad. I'm guessing both versions will be on discount.

I'm getting an iPhone 6 (hopefully this month when it gets announced tomorrow). If you download the iPad version of a non-universal app, can you play it on the iPhone?

Or does it only work one way - iphone version can be played on ipad?

For $0.99, this is still a great recommendation, but know it's not as good as the DS version. The iOS version made up only of the visual novel parts, and the gameplay parts have been completely removed from the game, to be summed up in little bits of text in place. You've still got the door decisions though.

It's not the best way to experience the story, but for $0.99, it's still worth it

Guess I'll pick this up. (Have owned the DS version since day one)

But what I really want is the Android port of Banshee's Last Cry

Aksys pls

You have no idea how much enjoyment you've ruined for yourself for playing in that order
