A Creepy Website Is Streaming From 73,000 Private Security Cameras

GAF definitely cannot handle this kind of power. We've already got creepers taking legshots and sniffing hair as it is.

from one of the camera pages:

What did people think would happen?

In simple terms: they don't care.

It's not an email account or a database, and as such it's perceived to be low risk. Most admins won't care about it or will just let it get overlooked. Or they keep simple usernames/passwords to make remote management easier for them.

I always surprised at how many open webcams and security cameras there are in the world. I mean, years ago you could go around with a what amounted to an LCD display and wireless radio and watch open feeds right off the street. You'd think they'd learn to lock that up.

Hey, stay positive buddy. What's your IP btw?

We already know what goes on behind closed doors at the EightBitNate household.

We had this thread before

It didn't end well

the thread took a sinister turn surprisingly fast.

got creepy as fuck

Something Awful use to have these web cam threads pop up every few months. While there was some weird stuff, usually the thread would find one really cool web cam, the owner would realize the increased activity, and then would interact with us watching the cam. I can't remember all of them, but there was one where a guy rigged a paint ball gun to a web cam, and whoever was logged on could try and shoot some kind of target. When he noticed all the activity he started placing more interesting and funny targets and leaving us messages. He/they eventually signed up to talk to us. Those were always great threads. Too bad GAF's got ruined, that was before my time here.

Site is pretty useless because it's so slow.

This entire situation could easily be resolved by the manufacturer including a random login for each camera sold, but I guess that would be a nightmare for the companies to do tech support.

This reminds me of that movie that took place entirely from the perspective of security cams catching shady shit. Forgot the name, but this must be viral marketing for the sequel, right?

This is so old, but I remember watching some out of curiosity a while back. Most were just empty businesses, but my favorite was a Japanese hair salon with a pivoting camera, and a dog grooming room. A number of sites popped up that would stream all at once, including a site that geo-located each cam (was taken down a month or so later).

The takeaway: don't use un-secured online cams.

Edit: these are password-protected cameras? This is different than sites seen previously.
