Oh yeah, she was hilarious in that movie. Didn't realize it was her.
I think she'll be more like Portman. But that's just what I'm hoping, I guess.

That was my only beef.

I was fine with all the changes from the comic except for that one. In a story that's all about real-life heroes (with Kick-Ass being the true every-man hero)...that kind of jumps out at you like "wtf".

Still loved it.
 
Movie was good but not amazing. Obviously Hit Girl was the highlight.

Weirdest part was seeing them driving up and down Yonge Street in that car throughout the movie. Well that and actually seeing the movie in Scotiabank where they actually GO to the beginning hehe. Toronto people know what I'm talking about.

It was a comic book movie.

It used the "What if a normal person tried it" as a hook to get the audience to relate to Dave. That's pretty much it. It obviously wasn't an accurate representation of that scenario. Manipulative? Sure, but it worked.

See, I think the film would've been much more interesting if it stuck with that premise. If the whole movie was him getting his ass kicked and just getting slightly better and better, and his ultimate final victory was saving someone's life from a few mobsters or something, I'd be cool with that.

I kinda hated that he actually wound up becoming a genuine "comic book" superhero in the end with a jetpack and murdering people. I figured he'd be more realistic as a regular teenager, who would try to be heroic without following through on what that might entail in certain situations, and be against killing the bad guy under most or all situations. I wanted the movie to be about him in over his head for the whole movie until he saves the day with a little bit of skill and a lot of luck. Going to school with bruises and broken bones, but still going back out there. The scene where he gets stabbed and the one where he saved the dude in front of the laundrymat (even though he technically got his ass handed to him) were the most meaningful to me.

I did like the scene where he accepted the responsibility for Big Daddy's death though...

To be fair, I think those people were more looking forward to the movie promoted by the Kick-Ass/Red Mist advertising rather than the Hit Girl/Big Daddy advertising... Something other than a typical comic book movie.

The sad thing about Big Daddy is
his fights are way more entertaining than any batman fight, probably because he's so brutal.
 
Only read the last few pages, but has anyone pointed out that there are two superhero worlds in this movie?

(semi-spoilers, all of which have been openly posted in the last few pages)


Kick Ass/Red Mist live in the real world, and are the 'what if someone tried to be a superhero' side of things.

Big Daddy/Hit Girl are the genuine superheroes camp. They're able to do unrealistic, unbelievable things because that's the world they live in.

Kick Ass is truly outside of the superhero world through most of the film. He's able to watch Hit Girl fight, but he's not able to get involved. Heck, he can't even follow her across the rooftop (basically hitting us over the head with 'he can't follow her into the other world symbolism). Similarly, he's only able to interact with the aftermath of BD's heroics in the warehouse. He sees what they can do, but can't do it himself, because he's still a 'real world superhero'. It's only when he truly gives himself over to their side that he manages to do the more traditional comic book stuff.
Conversely, Hit Girl only loses when she is brought back to reality, that is, when she bleeds. The moment she recognizes that she's a real person, and not a comic book character (as she's been raised to believe) she's instantly on Kick-Ass's level, and is unable to beat even a single opponent. Of course, at this point, Kick Ass has truly become a superhero, and, as such, is able to save the day, and then unrealistically fly off with her in his arms.
 
I really wish there were an orchestral soundtrack. So many great arrangements. I know I heard some tracks from 28 days later and Sunshine, but what was the song that was playing when they were riding in the mist mobile to safehouse b? It had some choir in it and sounded really awesome. Is that from Sunshine as well?
 
a lot of the soundtrack seems derived from prodigy's invaders must die. I recognized a lot of the tracks. I thought that was pretty awesome, I haven't heard that much prodigy in a movie since hackers came out. :lol

The audience I was in was openly laughing at that trailer at points. I could hear people mumbling that it was going to suck a row or two back.

Didn't quite get it. It looks fun.
 
Feels like a film that should have been longer. Not nearly enough Nicholas Cage, which was fantastic in this, I think.
 
Really enjoyed it. Hit Girl carried the entire movie, IMO.

I did feel the pacing and some of the scenes with Red Mist and Kick Ass were a little flat / slow. Aside from that, thoroughly enjoyable. I definitely could have done without the jetpack, though.

to those complaining about the jetpack: though the movie presents the conceit that it will explore the concept of "real people trying to be superheroes in reality," i feel there is almost no adherence to that principle or exploring of that in the movie itself. almost immediately after that question is raised, our main character has his senses dulled to a point that he can no longer feel much of anything where pain is concerned, rendering him special in some capacity. big daddy and hit girl were not real people--they were cartoon characters. awesome cartoon characters, but cartoon characters.

when the jetpack came into the movie, i definitely understood it was being taken to a new level of absurdity, but i think you could extrapolate from the tone of the rest of the movie that it was going to go to some bizarre, stupid places, and that it was going to wallow in the stupid and laugh about it. there's nothing wrong with that. i don't think the execution was particularly special or great, but it's not like KICK-ASS had the deathly serious tone of BATMAN BEGINS then suddenly shifted to shooting people with a jetpack gatling gun. it was already goofy as fuck from frame one.

As far as Nic Cage is concerned, I've always found not enough to be better than too much.

I tried conveying to my wife the amazingness of the Expendables, but to her it just looked like a dumb action movie, even though I clearly pointed out the presence of Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li.

And seriously, how terrible does that Asthon Kutcher - Katherine Heigl movie look? Oh my god.

Exactly. The comic book was pretty much the same way. The first issue was as realistic as it got. The moment Hit Girl was introduced, any and all realism went out the window.

While I agree in the sense that I wont be running out to buy the movie (where the FUCK is my Stardust Bluray?), I thought this movie was leagues more entertaining than the terrible Watchmen.
 
This was the best comedy I've seen in a long time, and the first movie in a while where I didn't get bored halfway through. It was pretty consistently funny. The
jetpack
had me cracking up.

Is the comic good? I'm getting the impression it's not as funny as the movie...

well, it certainly had less lofty ambitions and was less of a "mess." but yeah, i could see how you could find WATCHMEN bad.
 
Hit-girl is great, but I don't think she carried the movie that much until near the last 3/4 of the movie, she went from Joo Woo/Tarantino action star to little kid with blood nose being beat down by an adult villain. And Kick-Ass saving the day, the most unlikeliest of saves. As I understand it, the guy is a total loser and should not have been able to do all that shit.. he got lucky BD/HG bought all that gear, if they hadn't... Kick-ass woulda probably tripped on his own feet trying to knock the main villain guy out I reckon.

The premise is almost the same as the upcoming Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz flick, Knight and Day,

Licensing issues. You need a different license for the movie than the TV commercials. It would have been, for example RIDICULOUSLY expensive to use
Elvis' American Trilogy
in the commercial.

Same with Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" from the Mustang dance party scene.

I can't say I am surprised. Kick-ass intiial impressions don't lead you to think this will be a must-see event whos biggest supporters are nerds and comic book readers and some word of mouth.

w/ in the house, in a heartbeat by john murphy playing in the background was so rad.
 
Watched this last night. I enjoyed it. I went in with the expectation that it would be disappointing like Millar's Wanted.

+ the soundtrack
+ the humor
+ the fights

They definitely changed a good chunk of the graphic novel (the focus switching from Kick-Ass to Red Mist and BD and HG), the relationship between KA and the girl, the ending, the father/son relationship between Red Mist and his dad.

My only gripe was the lack of focus on Kick-Ass, but I still enjoyed the movie. Definitely an enjoyable experience. Yeah, some of the complaints in this thread are valid, but that doesn't detract from the experience.
 
Yeah, I got the MGS2 impression. You were there more as a objective viewer to a superhero as opposed to a subjective one.

I thought it was ok. More or less on the level of Wanted. Not going to rush out and buy it or anything, but it was a decent popcorn flick.
