A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

i used this on my psp, and after the menu screen, it just sent me back to the full site again. any way to fix that?

The scroll wheel for page choosing is great!

Update:

I've changed the Go To Page button into a dropdown list as requested. Tell me what you think. I'm kind of on the fence about it. For smaller threads it's fine, but for big 100+ pagers, it is a bit cumbersome.

It's much better than having to manually put the page number in. Maybe 'Go to Last Page' could be nearer the top, under 'Go to First page'.

ckohler changed it so only mobile phones could use it; a mod asked him to.

Also, I must say awesome app :D
I've been using for the last couple of weeks.

not sure if it's a bug in your app but if you look at the off topic forum right now you have to scroll left and right. This wasn't happening before. It's probably due to a specific thread or something

See, I found entering in the numbers to be a better option due to the number of popular threads that are 100+ pages. The only issue was that the soft-keyboard wasn't set for number by default. And where is the Go to Last Page button, I never found it.

Seconded.

The scroll wheel is very nifty but we also need a last page button.

I used this for the first time today and wish every forum could be like this. It's amazing. Good work. I'd pay for a native app that allowed posting and stuff hosted on the GAF server.

Just wanted to say this is so great I already take it for granted.
It's become an essential part of the way I read GAF.

Update:

- The Last Page/First Page button is back by popular demand
- Ability to jump to any page is now moved to the bottom
- Tap the page info text in the bottom toolbar to jump to any page
- Tap the Mail style arrow in the bottom toolbar to reply to a thread
- Added ability to jump pages on forum screen
- Minor css tweaks

Let me know if you guys notice any bugs. I ditched the scroll wheel for an input box for jumping to any page for several reasons. One, it's faster for giant threads to type a number than scroll, two because I can include info on the number of pages in the input box and three it should be more compatible with other cell phone browsers.

you can go to last page by clicking on the right arrow near a thread on the main page.
AWESOME.

And the update seems to have perfected everything! Holy cow! Great job Ckohler and team!

this app is really fantastic. I almost prefer reading gaf on my iPhone as opposed to my laptop. I guess the main limitation is that it's a web app so I'm guessing logging in, search, replying, viewing subscribed threads, etc, is not a possibility?

It could be done but since I host this off of the neogaf servers, it wouldn't be secure. However, you can reply. Just tap the arrow at the bottom of a thread or the quotes next to a post to quite it. It'll open the reply screen on neogaf.com. I just did to post this. :)

Love this so much Thanks for all the effort.

Is there anyway to distinguish threads that have new posts and ones I've already visited? Maybe make the thread text gray? Maybe it's not possible without be a signed in user?

recommendation:

some sort of small overlay (like 50% transparent) with last page and bottom of page buttons, then modifying the top of the page to have Gaming and O-T forum links on the left and right sides

this way it would mimic the addictiveness of GAF in it's normal form, and the end key on the keyboard

ok I'm on my phone right now and trying to change pages brings up a. Vertical software keyboard and after I input the page number the safari locks up. It worked flawlessly before

using it to post now, as usual. great changes!

after using it for a while, all I could hope for is a way to switch forums from every page.

Again...outstanding work! Do you have a paypal I can send a donation too?

Is there any way to provide access to the Online Matchup Forum? I spend like 50 percent of my time there when I'm on GAF.

Yeah, I would appreciate this feature as well.

Keep up the good work, I still pray for a native app though. Till then, this is an amazing solution.

DopeyFish:
That hovering/transparent input idea is clever but it would be too fancy, especially on Pocket IE and other lesser phone browsers. You do know you can tap the white title bar to scroll to the top at any time and you can tap the title of the thread to scroll to the bottom, right?

Blueblur1:
I doubt the website is causing crashes. You probably just need to restart your iPhone. Safari crashes happen to everyone, especially when using the keyboard.

mattiewheels:
It's only two taps (three at most) to switch forums, you lazy bums! :lol I'd rather not add a whole button to every screen just for that. It it really that big a deal? Besides, I'd prefer the interface to stay non GAF specific since I plan to eventually use this same design on other forums I visit.

Shawnwhann:
It can't display the Online Matchup forum. My scripts can only see the web site as it appears to non-logged in users, and they can't see it.

Is there a straight to bottom trick with mobile safari? Would it be possible to add that to the neoGAF web app?

I know tapping at the very top of the window auto scrolls to the top of the page but I couldn't get it working for the bottom.

I don't think there's a trick for safari to do it. But ckohler's gaf iphone page has that feature - you click the thread title at the top of the page, and it'll move you to the bottom.

Wow; I was completely unaware of this. Totally makes browsing even THAT much easier. Using it now. Thanks, ckohler!

At some points in the distant past, there were attempts made by someone to make a:

1) portable friendly GAF (formatted for portable devices... no images, etc. etc.)
2) RSS updates for GAF.

I don't know of either of those still exist, but they would be handy AND a lovely additional draw on GAF bandwidth. Cough.

Awesome, thanks!

I've been using this regularly lately. I was a little jealous, disappointed that I'd been scooped, but this is really a tremendous UI for GAF and does everything I'd hoped to complete for my project. Great job again, it's great to use on the go.

Just to be clear, there's no relation between ckohler and Kobun Heat, right? Just a coincidence?

I deleted my original reply. I've been upset about some stuff lately and this isn't the place to take my frustrations out. The pot's been stirred a lot here lately on GAF and I don't wanna stir it more. My apologies to everyone.

Works great on my Centro.

Thank you for creating this!

This is going to hamper my productivity when I'm not near a computer. :D

This is a great idea :)

But here's where my complaint is..I think it's TOTAL bs limiting it to iPhones. I have a PSP and it has MAJOR trouble with this site due to all the gif's and pictures. I just feel it's discriminating against people who use PSP to browse this site. Something like this would be a godsend for PSP but as usual these mods have to be major jackasses and limit it to iPhone. Total bullcrap. I'm praising the app OP don't get me wrong it took a lot of work to put that together so I applaud it. I just really think if something like this is offered for iPhone it needs to be offered for PSP as well.
LOL!

You may be stupid.

Thanks! You had the idea first. I just brought my design skills to it.

No relation. We just have the same name.

once again, the app requires you to scroll sideways, this time when viewing the gaming forum. There must be a specific thread that's causing this bug. It'll probably go away by the time you read this ckohler.

I love this app, as Ive said before, but some of the comments that get repeated in the thread lead me to think that the main page should have a list of the available tapping shortcuts. like tapping the right arrow to go to the last page of the thread. or tapping the thread title to go to the bottom of the screen. or tapping the page numbers to switch pages.

those shortcuts are very handy but they are not discoverable. the elements don't look like buttons so some people won't think to tap them. They would only know if they read the OP and a few other posts describing updates.

I don't think it's a big deal for us who've followed this app from the beginning but this key legend would be useful if the popularity of the app increases.

It's caused by thread titles that have a long string of never breaking characters. Stuff like "OOOOMMMMGGGG". I have an idea that might fix this.

Good point. I'll try adding some tips to the main menu screen.

Ckohler, check your PMs.

This is the way I browse GAF at home. I don't even bother with my laptop or home pc unless I'm in a posting mood. Thanks again for this.

Dunno if this was asked before, but is there anyway to view the Online Forums?

Also is text in
Code:
blocks readable? [URL="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=332215"]See Media Create thread[/URL]

I've fixed the left/right scrolling bug. It shouldn't happen anymore.

No. Non-logged in users can't read that forum so neither can this.

I don't know why the [code] in that particular thread doesn't work but it works most other threads. However, code text support overall is spotty.
