A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Just a curiosity.... why the trouble for the app?

The main reason I bought an Iphone was cause it's browser handles pages with no trouble, making it fairly effortlessly to browse them.... not to mention post on them.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but would it be possible to do a version with no images?

I tried to download a single page from a thread and see how much bandwidth it would spend and with all the avatars and not many images in the thread it was about 3MB... For 1 page! With the 100 MB a month download limit I have, that is pretty limiting.

So maybe there could be a version with no images at all, another one with just the avatars disabled and another one with everything? :D

-Gigantic pics
-Faster loading
-Sure you can view the whole page with flicking and stuff and pinching, but why bother when you do not have to
-Engadget said the same thing but...
For obvious reasons, we're not really big believers in optimizing Engadget for individual devices or platforms. Despite the unrelenting number of requests for an iPhone-optimized version of Engadget, we thought we'd let Apple stand by its whole "the real internet in your pocket" thing. And then we ran the numbers. We could hardly believe it.

Can't you turn off images in Settings?

You should check out what that "Settings" button on the first page of the site does.

Update:

- Tap on photos to open them in a new window where you can pinch/zoom/pan
- Added Help, Tips and About information to Main menu

FYI, Firmware 2.1 has added full screen support for web apps.
Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;" />
<meta name="apple-mobile-web-app-capable" content="yes" />
<meta names="apple-mobile-web-app-status-bar-style" content="black-translucent" />

Thanks. I need to look into this some more. This may not work in full-screen mode because my webapp doesn't make ajax calls.

Welcome, just thought I'd pass the information on to one of my favorite webapps.

Hey, so I tried using this with the new DSi browser, and it just forwards me to the regular forum, is there any way you could allow the DSi browser to view the forum using this app? Regular gaf is a little too hard to read with all the pics and stuff.

Thanks for bumping this thread or else I would haven known. Bookmarked and added to home screen of my ipod touch.

I would need to know what the browser user-agent is.

I just wanted to say thanks for making this, because I probably use it just as much as I browse the full site on my computer.

The real beauty of this app is the ability to view GAF when you're banned.

Er...you could always do this. Clear your cookies and viola!

I don't think banning is intended to keep you from reading the site.

Mine too, but a dedicated app would be pretty slick.
A dedicated app for the iPhone or G1 would be amazing, considering how much Safari crashes on the iPhone.

Edit: That being said, I exclusively use the web app for iPhone GAF viewing. You da man ckohler.

That has never worked for me. IP ban.

I want an iPhone just for this app.

It works fine on other phones. Not all, obviously.

Just wanted to post a testimonial. I use this website more than any other app on my iPhone. NEOGAF in your pocket is awesome. There is never any downtime, and it's easy to 'pick up and play' for short bursts if you're waiting in line anywhere.

The only thing I wish they would add is support for subscribed threads. The many little features about this app make it the best, like tapping the thread title to zoom to the bottom of the page, hitting the right arrow to get to the last page of a thread from the forum screen, or tapping the top banner to zoom to the top of a page.

Just got an android g1 and this is awesome. Thanks!

Any plans on adding a search feature? That would make it perfect.

great webapp. any plans for a native one?

ipod is tres happy now!

I've been using it on my G1 as well. Works really well and makes it great to easily browse GAF whereever I want.

beautiful pic, giga!

use this every day on my psp, many thanks.

Yeah, pretty good app...I'm not sure if I'd want it to be native though, because I like having the ability to switch between other sites that I'm surfing at the same time...

I wish GAF would make a mobile version of the site natively. Rivals wireless = godly. This is pretty sweet but I've never found much use for it without the posting ability. Great implementation though.

Reading GAF on a phone is easily the best with this app, but I agree with the posting point.

It's not a great experience when I want to reply to someone. Here's to hoping that perhaps a deal can be made where this is implemented on the GAF site with added functionality.

I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice.

Regardless, huge ups to ckohler for the app.

Any chance of a Blackberry version ?

DCX

I have no clue how I missed this when I posted the same question...Then again after 3 pages my eyes were probably glazing over. :D

As an update I just thought I'd give you a heads up that this works wonderfully via Opera Mini on my Blackberry Curve and since I believe you have a Storm there should be no reason why it wouldn't on there either. Not so pretty through the Curve's Browser however.

I think I've posted this before, but I just wanted to express my gratitude for this app.
I use it probably almost as much as normalGAF.

Any suggestions for further improvements?

Before you reply, here's some common requests I CAN'T add:
- Direct posting
- Viewing of "Online Gaming" forum
- Native app
- Show "read" status of threads

One problem I've had is that the way that the link targets are rendered, I accidentally enter threads all the time while trying to scroll the page. Possibly create a dedicated "View Thread" link on each thread item or maybe an icon similar to the last page ">" on the left side.

I think that would improve usability.
