A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

It was submitted and rejected just before 3.0 came out. But I think a version of Ckohlers was being made into a native app.

I this works then sweet, thanks.

I never disabled it but did a full restore recently so maybe that reset it. Thanks again!

Madvillain: I dunno, but I never felt like it would add much to te experience so I was never that excited about it.
The webapp doesn't use any of the benefits of saving it on the iPhone Homescreen yet (optional fullscreen viewing, offline cache etc). That would a good place to start and see if the native app is worth it.

Side note, despite switching on the option to show the name of the last poster, it's not working on subscribed threads page. Is anybody else experiencing this?

Yeah, mine is like that too (subscribed threads).

Yea,h I understand the advantages of a native app, but I'm not sure the functionality of the webapp is so bad that it warrants having the appstore approval system get in the way of updates and flexibility for those features. It's an interesting dichotomy.

for me its a nobrainer. Its designed to view a forum, which by its nature is a time-critical thing. So I don't see any major advantage in offline caching - even avatars change regularly, and you can turn them off if bandwidth is an issue.

Plus, keeping it as a webapp means its open to the millions of devices out there that aren't iphones. I use it on my Nokia all the time as well as my ipod touch.

The webapp is godly, I can't tell you how perfect it really is, even if it is considered "simplistic" by some. Another thanks for making this, even though I've been using it since the Fall of 08', it's probably my most under appreciated link on my phone - Free games come and go, but there's always GAF to kill time :lol

I spent several days tinkering with making a true web app version that works completely outside of Safari. While it's kinda neat to see it fill the entire screen, I noticed immediately that there are drawbacks. For example, when you launch the app it always starts you back on the main menu so you always loose your place. This is especially frustrating when you want to open a web link from a thread which leaves the app and opens Safari. Returning puts you back at the main menu. I tried to have it remember your last place but this got sketchy if you were, let's say, in the middle of making a post. If you want to leave the web app at the post screen to copy some text from another web page or app, you can't simply close the web app and return to the post screen like you can switch tabs in Safari.

Another issue is that there is no Stop, Refresh or Back buttons in this mode which I actually found I missed. Sometimes I like to click "refresh" in Safari to get the latest threads and in the full web app mode you can't unless I built it into the web app's interface manually. Seems like a waist of real-estate.

Thus, the only advantage I'm seeing is that you gain only a minor amount of screen real estate at the bottom and I can cache a couple of 5k files. That's it. It hardly seems worth it.

Great job on this man, Gaf is way easier to read with this than with the default browser. Awesome stuff. Im using the Samsung Moment and it works perfectly :D

Is this a fake post?

Yes. Obviously. It seems most apps on the App Store get taken out or are rejected because you can access porn with them (see the whole forChan ordeal).

Obviously NeoGaf doesn't have porn in it, so I don't know what other excuse Apple might have in rejecting a native app for the website. Maybe it was buggy? Don't know.

So since many devices now come with web browsers and are able to access this webapp, including iPhones, android devices, etc should we change the thread title and get rid of the word "iPhone"?

I agree.

Why is this necessary? It's designed with the iPhone in mind with very iPhone-like aesthetic and colour scheme.

I suppose there are a whole bunch of potential users who don't even realise that they can use it, however.

I would like to see a screen shot or picture of the web app on a Nexus and Android.

Just got an iPhone and this is so cool! Am I able to create an icon so that I can just tap right into this little gem?

EDIT: Answered in the faq! NIIIIIIIICE. Not only do I have this app but it now sits proudly on the first 'page' of apps. This fine app. beats many other apps. Apps. that are clearly not this great.

Seeing this on the front page I just had to thank you ckohler. This little app of yours is brilliant and is by far the second most used item on my iPod, after my music. I use it on a daily basis, and have been since (canadian) Thanksgiving last year when my brother showed it to me. Appreciate the effort youve put into it, it works really well.

Are you looking for pics of the web app running strictly on the Nexus One, or running on any Android device?

Pics of it running on the Droid...

These are the best screens I could get with my laptop integraded webcam - I left my camera at school. The GAF iPhone site running on my Droid Eris. I'll get better shots next week.

Edit: haha, beaten by vastly superior pictures.

Is it possible to add a page jump feature?it's not fun going 10 pages back, one page at a time, in those 50+ page threads.

I just got a Droid a few days ago, and I've been using this app heavily ever since. It's really wonderful. I think the only shortcoming for me is (seemingly) being unable to copy a link to a specific post as you can do on the main GAF site. Does this exist and I'm missing it, or could it be added if not?

Ckohler you know with html5 you can use local storage. As well as other cool features.

BTW keep up the great work, its great on my nexus one.

ckohler, would it be possible to have an option to let you jump to the last page of a thread right when you go in, instead of the first page? For example, I always want to jump to the last page of my subscribed topics without having to load the 1st page. Anyway just an idea, I don't know if it's feasible.

Hit the '>' next to the thread title.

That's pretty much identical to how it looks on my Nexus One.

My gaf account has only just been approved but i've been using this app on my iphone to help me lurk for quite some time now. :D

Just want to say, great job!
