A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Hey ckohler, just wanted to thank you again for this web app. One of the best I've seen for any mobile apps.

Some questions: is there a way for me to quickly get back to the Main screen once I'm inside a thread? Right now I have to I think go backwards by hitting Forum and then back to Main to get to my subscribed threads.

And is it difficult to implement functionality that when you click on a subscribed thread it'll auto-jump to the first new post since I left? I know regular NeoGAF doesn't have this which I think is important given the huge threads but just curious.

Thanks!

Just bookmark the main menu and pick it from your bookmarks. That way you skip the page requests.

This is difficult to do because images/avatars/etc. affect the length of the page and making scrolling to a specific place not work right. For example, the browser will initially go the correct post but then the page will get longer displaying a different one.

Hey ckohler, quick question. Is it possible to make it so we can see sent Private Messages? Sometimes I like to refer back to a Sent item before I respond.

By the way, thanks for a great app!

While my laptop is dead this my sole way to browse GAF.

But seeing as I needed at least 3 chrome extensions/Greasemonkey scripts to get all the functionality of the webapp in real GAF I'm not that fussed.

Broken again? At first I thought gaf was just down due to the world cup games going on today, but going directly to the website works fine.

Well it started to work for me again. I did get an email from the NeoGAF staff saying that someone had tried to log into my account 5 times and failed, but I'm thinking that was me trying to use the app and it not working :| The email had a space to include an IP address, but it didn't for some reason :|

The email was from you most likely spamming the login form. The webapp was working except for the main menu. Mods removed the active users list and I didn't anticipate that happening.

In fact, all of the recent bugs have been due to changes GAF mods are making. It seems they are trying to add some kind of cache system. I've been getting weird Guru Meditation 505 errors when I browse on my desktop.

505? I've been seeing 503.

I just got the iPad and I was wondering if it's better to use the web app or just use the normal site? Right now I'm on the normal site but I heard some stuff about not being able to read spoilers. Is that still true??

Yeah you have to click quote.

I was wondering the same but ended up using the web app on my phone & the site on my iPad.

This thing is just getting better and better. I use it way too much.
Same here, I'm never off the bloody thing. Infact I'm writing this whilst sat in the pool bar, waiting for my ride to the airport so I can fly home from Rhodes :lol

Is there a way to go to last read post instead of going to the last post? I never remember which page I'm on in the megathreads.

I asked ckohler this too and said it would be very difficult to implement.

I love that feature on the official playstation forums - clicking the thread title auto-jumps to the first unread post.

Can we get an updated icon to take advantage of the iPhone 4 screen? It looks so out of place with the rest of my icons. :lol
Also the buttons like "Spoiler" and "More" are really blurry on my iPhone 4 now - any plans to update them all?

Thanks!

No clue if this can be addressed, but the "in reply" buttons look pretty low res in comparison to the Apple supplied buttons on an iPhone 4:

...not a deal breaker by any means, but visually jarring when you see them side by side like that.

The web app is nice but there is no way to jump straight to the last page of a thread, at least not in the Blackberry Internet Browser. I think Opera Mini showed a Last Page button while viewing the forums, but I stopped using it for various reasons.

I specifically mean a last page button when viewing the forum list of threads. I know I can open page 1 of the thread then click last page, but that's an extra step that slows things down a lot, especially on GAF where page 1 is usually full of gigantic images.

Do you see the arrows on the right side of the thread names in the thread list?

Clicking on those takes you to the last page of the thread.

Can't help with the rest of it, but I made an icon for the iPhone 4 home screen:

Just use one of the bookmarklets that lets you use a custom icon for bookmarks on the home screen - there's one here - and plug in the URL of that image when it prompts you. Then add a home screen icon as normal and it should look nice and crisp.

off-topic, but i used to own an iphone 3g, and i recall the screenshots being about the size of the screen - do they all need to be resized down to the correct size now with iphone 4, or have you enlarged this manually to make it clearer what you were referring to?

That's the size of iPhone 4 screencaps because that's the resolution of them. It's just condensed to the normal screen, which is why there's more pixel density/Retina screen fun.

Those arrows don't appear when viewing with the Blackberry Internet Browser. I believe they used to appear with Opera Mini but they didn't show up in Bolt either. I'm not sure why that would be the case, but its frustrating.

Since the iPhone 4's got an increased resolution over the previous models, screenshots from the new phone will look substantially bigger (4x more space covered) than the previous ones.

The jist is that all those pixels of the big screenshot are then mushed down into the 3.5" screen and you end up getting a really sharp picture.

The downside is of course that screenshots now look comically oversized compared to the old ones. :lol

:lol agreed - i did know why they would be bigger if it was by default, just wasn't sure if they were indeed by default

How do you get to this screen?

When I reply from the WebApp it takes me to the full site so I can reply.

Edit* Nevermind, I never knew you could log in to the web app. Mind blown.

Derp, mine keeps switching back to the old, fugly icon. Any tips?

Yeah, mine did too. In the end I just made an HTML document with that icon and a redirect to this app and bookmarked that instead. Hopefully it will be officially updated before too long.

How come the iPad web app no longer highlights my own posts in green, and now re-directs me to the standard web page to make a post?

I updated the default icon. Give it a try and let me know how it looks.

You must not be logged in. Look at the bottom.

ckohler, I wanted to apologize to you for a post I made late last year bad mouthing you for not having the web app available to PSP users. When I did that it was after you made it available to PSP users too and I'm sorry for that. I have an iPad now so I do all my portable browsing on there. The web app runs GREAT..very fast on iPad and I'm very impressed! Keep up the great work :) I wanted to do the right, decent thing and apologize for my action last year.

I'd just like to chime in and say I've been using the app ever since I got an iPhone about a month back and I really love it. Makes browsing gaf sooo much easier :D
