A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

^I don't know.. probably an OS thing, then. Or you're not logged in when on Safari?

Anyway, here's a request, ckohler. I've been using the mockup on my phone a lot lately, and one thing that's been bugging me when browsing the board/thread list view, is the shaded out first page button. I reach the bottom of the list after opening a bunch of threads in background tabs, and leave that tab to check a thread, and come back to the board view where i'm still at the bottom, and want to refresh.

So basically, why not have the 'prev page' button, when on the first page of a board, serve as a refresh button, similarly to how the next page button in-thread serves as a refresh when on the last page.

Does that make sense? Since no one is ever browsing the last page of a board, why not have the inline refresh tool on the first page, instead.

Just something i'd like to see, since I often find myself tapping on the bottom bar to jump to the top, then swiping down to show the Safari url bar so I can tap refresh—a bit of a nuisance. :p

Semi-off topic: is there any way to add code for NeoGAF Prime so that when viewing on an iPad 3 it is fit to screen and not partially zoomed in every time you load a new page? While NeoGAF Mobile is great on the iPad, NeoGAF Prime would be great on iPad 3 if not for that partially zoomed default state.

I think it has something to do with setting a viewport for ios browsers:

http://developer.apple.com/library/...ontent/UsingtheViewport/UsingtheViewport.html

With that note, does the board have a way to implement an "click to show" feature for people browsing the site with the images turned off? Right now they just change to links and open in a new tab. It's a bit annoying, and I had to resort to an extension for my browser.

That should do it, thanks, will test tonight.

Click to show usually means it's already loaded, and simply hidden, no? I thought the whole point of not loading up pics was for a speedier experience for certain people, rather that a SFW type thing.

But obviously if it could just load in-line when hitting the show/hide link, it'd be the best of both worlds.

This brings up an interesting question, which is probably early to be asking, but when an auto-redirect feature kicks in, to send any neogaf domain links on mobile devices to ckohlers web app, how'd that works for tablets?

A lot of people seem to be loving the mockup on the new (and old) iPad, so i'm just wondering if it'll get that same auto-redirect treatment or not.

Er... Where can I find this "mockup"?
Been using 'ole secondapps as always even if it has been a bit broken in the last month.

I just hope 2 features will remain in the new version:

Your own posts (even when quoted!) being highlighted (god that is such a bless, I wish Neogaf Prime had that!) and the go to LAST PAGE and go to FIRST PAGE button when in threads.

As for some improvements I wish to see:

•I wish it'd be easier/quickier to delete PMs, and not just by one at a time.

•The ability to specifically turn off .GIF images while leaving any other image format as ON. Clearly because of 3G bandwith and .gif infested threads without having to click on each [image] or to find out a screen you wanted to see is instead a .gif video.

Cool thanks, love it! Great work as usual by ckohler.

Couple of things:
I went into preferences and set the arrow button as go to last page. Problem is I can't find such button when in threads? Is that normal? I loved how the Last Page button changed dynamically into First Page when you were at the last page of a thread.
I don't like how the Previous Page and Next Page buttons are so big and just blend into the last post of the page, is that going to be fixed?

My Most Wanted feature, unfortunately, still missing (if possible of course, but it'd be such a #gamechanger):

•The ability to specifically turn off .GIF images while still showing any other image format with PHOTO ON. Clearly because of 3G bandwith and .gif infested threads without having to click on each [image] or to find out a screen you wanted to see is instead a .gif video.

Press the 'Go to page' button at bottom of page, first page/last page options are shown.

Man this new mockup is a lot better than the old version! One question: Is there any way to subscribe to a new thread without posting?

He's working on it.
Mockup Update:

Added:
  • Composing/replying to Private Messages
  • "Thread" button when viewing single post
  • Can now delete subscriptions and/or change their type
  • Added Active user info to homepage
  • Added ability to view all current members
  • Can send PMs from member profile

Fixes:
  • Fixed text scaling of some elements
  • Previously hidden photos now open in new tab when tapped
  • Moved PM folder selection to top
  • Adjusted multi-quote button position to conserve space
  • Reduced padding on some elements
  • Better looking white buttons
  • Improved color of message body/tag links
  • Widened Logo button slightly

Remaining:
  • Subscribe to thread
  • View thread top posters
  • Dark theme

Guys, I'd like some feedback on the last three items left. First, where do you think I should put the links to Subscribe and view top posters? Should they just be links at the bottom of the thread view, beneath the pagination buttons? Suggestions are welcome but please keep it simple.

Second, for the Dark theme. I want to keep the blue headers and satin menus the same but I would like some suggestions on the color scheme of the rest. In particular, what should the lists views, thread views and member profile screens look like? Again, please leave the headers and menus untouched. At most you should only be changing the colors of the bodies of the pages. If you do this, it will save me time trying to come up with the right colors.

Thanks.

He's working on it.

Is that list final?
Meaning there's no way he'll add anything ever regarding that ability I was asking about being able specifically turn off .GIF images while still showing any other image format with Photo set to On? Or will the thing being kept worked on every once in a while like the original secondapps? Just for the sake of discussion, in case that list is final, nobody besides me think it would be essential while on 3G to be able to turn off bandwith-sucking .gif galore?
You basically can't go in the OT section at all if you have images on and are with a bandwith cap on 3G, 1 to 3MB gifs everywhere :/ same with most official threads. You guys must all have no limit bandwith, I'm sooo jelly! Good for you tho, NA deals must be much better than what we have here.
Is it a decision he made or there's some technicality rendering that very difficult/time consuming to implement?
Either way, I'll stop asking, but it'd be nice to know :)

I don't know, but I would like to agree with your suggestion. I think the ability to turn off.gif would be great. It's separate from images, cause I would still like to see images, but I don't want to download 4 MB file of some stupid pop singer dancing or something lame all the time.

Um, you can disable animated gifs in your mobile browser settings. I don't think that there would be any way (or reason) for ckohler to implement this into the mobile site. Just turn off animated gifs in your browser's settings.

not possible to disable gifs alone in iOS (no smartypants Android comments, please).

I like the idea of a gif (or image file size) cutoff setting. if it’s possible, then cool. But it seems to me like a feature for a future point update.

I don't think that the list is final, it's just that you suggesting the .gif stuff is the first time it's come up in 36 pages. Give ckohler a chance to catch up :)

I updated the mockup so you guys can try out the recently discussed changes. There isn't a "footer menu" yet and other stuff is still coming (subscribing, etc). I just wanted to let you guys try using the layout changes now before I went further to get usability feedback.

Honestly, I personally still prefer the forum shortcuts to be hidden inside the menu to save precious screen real estate. They are shown per request from the mods.

The search button is just a link. Just my browser. Works well in default Safari Mobile and IE9 Mobile. Still prefer the shortcuts to be hidden for more screen real estate.

I really like the new footer and redone reply button, I don't like new one click links at the top but I don't think that will change. Great job!

Hmm, I completely agree with you about the links being hidden.

Ads + the forum buttons knock actual content down WAY too far, and that's on my 720p Galaxy Nexus with 70% font size.

Hate the always visible forum links...wastes a lot of space.

Also the new reply in threads is showing up for me as a link, not a button. Galaxy Nexus, default browser.

Guys, refresh your browser or clear your cache before posting bugs. If you're using the mockup, you have to clear your cache when there is a change to the design. Thanks.

I would prefer the links hidden in the menu to, as you say it takes up real estate. Two clicks to change forums doesn't bother me (and to be honest, when I'm on my mobile I'm more interested in my Subscribed Threads), but there we go.

I like the positioning of the 'New Reply/Thread' button, the 'Last Page / New Reply / Next Page' buttons seem to take up a lot of space. Could they just be text only to save a bit of space?

Regardless, this is still the best mobile site, keep up the good work.

70%? Damn, I'm on 90% text size and I'm thinking of going back to 100%. :/

Does anybody know how to create a home screen shortcut in chrome android? Doesn't seem to have the option.

Roundabout way, but you have to create a bookmark in the default browser. If you set chrome as your default browser when you create a bookmark on the homescreens it'll open with chrome.

The new footer is definitely out of place. I think the old layout was more user friendly. Having new reply between the page buttons could cause some false clicks, and I think when compared to the header the positioning is offputting. A footer menu that mimics the header is probably the best medium. Moving the buttons to the same "plane" with the linen texture will help offse them from the posts and keep them contained. You could then apply the same design scheme as the header where certain items are shown by default and others are hidden.

Looks good to me with the visible buttons.

I agree but Subscribed section is my most used, if that were there with the others I'd be all in. Either way I don't think there is anything you can do to make me not use this so carry on!

Edit: I see subscribed is back after cache clear, my bad!

Looks good.

I think you could potentially reduce the icons at the bottom for a little bit more economy, but even on my relatively small phone I think it works well. Relatedly, I think the blue bar at the bottom is a tiny bit underutilized, but I can't think of what else you'd put there.

I really appreciate all the work you're putting into this.

Too much real esate used up by the visible buttons IMO, it varies between 40-50% of the screen(!) between header, ad and the first thread/post.

Edit: the open/close menu > shoots you down the bottom of the page thing is still happening. :(

I really think it looked better as an expandable menu. It's clutter city on my HTC Trophy, but I can get use to it.

It probably looks a lot better on the iPad.

hmm I gotta say I’m not a fan of the new, neutered menu bar. I really liked that the old one had links to subscribed threads and preferences in it. now it’s just OT, gaming and community.

I thought the old menu was way more useful for the majority of users. and I preferred having the extra space for content and not menus, considering that we already have space eaten up by the ads.

The subscribed button is gone though, I think the instant functionality of pretty much every facet from that drop down menu was really great and I really hope it's not gone for good.

Yeah it's weird it takes up more space by default for less functionallity.

I am a fan of the new footer tho.

Quick dirty idea for the new real estate at the bottom:
jbk9w0FIrrWYJK.jpg
jEg44SfPutsxE.jpg
Move the page buttons down to the header, make the Page X of X a dynamic button (if possible) that still shows the current page number and when pressed brings up the numerical keyboard. If done right, doesn't necessarily need to say "first/last", there should be enough space to sneak in the up arrow/hint that you tap the header to go back up the page again. Then put the top poster/sub button back up there. Finally either expand the reply button a little or fit something else in there (Search). :P

Also, IMO the way that the now visible forum section buttons at designed causes a big disconnect in the overall design of the layout. If theyre visible all the time they need to look like they're part of the header itself (and appear ontop of the other buttons once the menu is unfolded).

Right now it looks rather tacky with the buttons blending into the ad. Even on the iPad it looks strange (and stretched out).

Of course, I was just asking if the list was final 'cause iirc a mod mentioning a couple of pages back that the chance to ask for new/different things to implement was mostly gone/maybe too late. To be fair I suggested the .gif stuff also way back when there was no talk of a "proper" Evilore sanctioned webapp, but I'm happy that now people are agreeing it would be a bless to have that option and I'm content with ckohler aknowledging such request just by reading our posts. If ckohler see it fit for such option to be added in the future, whenever, great! Otherwise we'll all still love the guy :)

The new forum links aren't really useful to me, I mostly just go to my subscribed threads. They're not awful or anything, but it would be nice if there could be a preference to have them within the menu, as before.

The layout for the controls at the bottom is good, the reply button is more obvious and there wasn't really any advantage to hiding the first/last page buttons. I wonder if there should be some indication as to the function of the go-to-page input box, though.

Also, regarding that input, it's bugged on Android, both in the default browser and Chrome. The numeric keypad pops up fine, but you get a 'next' button rather than a 'submit', so there's no way to actually go to the page you type in:

I actually noticed this a couple of days ago so it's not something that was introduced with this update, but before you could just press the go-to-page button to submit the form.

try entering a page number. when you exit the number entry, it goes to that page.
