A "Prequel Trilogy" for one important series could be in the making at Square Enix

It's actually three prequels to Final Fantasy XV.

Two of them will come out before the main title, and the third will be delayed until next gen.

Dissidia

Duodecim was a prequel, and in that setting that means more characters, as some get eliminated over time.

Of course, this means Lughtning too, but it's OK as long as she's as suplexable by Sabin as everybody else.

Chrono Origins

And it can be all about Frog's days of defending his queen and kingdom.

It's prequels for their Eidos games.

Okay fine. It's Prequels for Final Fantasy Tactics. They are bringing Matsuno back to direct. Look at what i've done to myself.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were talking about Deus Ex. We already have the first game in that trilogy.

I am still bitter that the Directors Cut wasn't released on PS4/X1. To me it just made no sense. It would have been a decent launch title.

Legacy of Kain?
Highly doubt it. Another reason being:

Square Enix Japan registered a trademark for Prequel Trilogy for use with video games in Japan.
I'm not sure if the LoK games were ever that big in Japan plus this makes it sound like a game series originally developed in Japan. So, no, unfortunately not Kain. :(

If this really does turn out to involve Lightning then there is no hope for Square Enix...they will simply suck their own dick until they suffocate to death.

I don't know if they can further expand their backstories. And even 2 of the trio (Angeal and Genesis) does not have an interesting backstory
aside from being Project G babies like Sephiroth.
I have a problem with trying to make minor events into game-sized events. What they did with Crisis Core regarding Zack's backstory(and the events of Nibelheim) was fine, but all the additional "tacked on" crap for the sake of making the plot more epic than it needed to be was not. I, personally, wouldn't have mind the whole thing being a novella. IMO, it didn't deserve an actual GAME, same way I feel the Jecht/Braska/Auron pilgrimage doesn't deserve a full game.

Also, FFVII's timeline(thanks to the FFVII Compliation) is so damn cluttered with "world ending" events, it's not funny. I only accept prequel/sequel games if enough time has passed where it doesn't feel cheap, or if the writing's good enough it makes sense as a direct follow-up or set-up to the first game.

You know what? I wouldn't mind a Lightning prequel! Flesh out her character more. A backstory of how she came to be so cold hearted and mean.

If they did it right, it could be good and turn around her character. But this is Square Enix we're talking about, the same devs who wrote Lightning Returns.

Anyway, a Lightning prequel could be in the works and makes sense since all the assets are already in place. They need something to fill the gaps between FFXV, which might be over 5 years away!

Hmm...

Three different FF games getting a prequel, perhaps across different platforms? I can imagine this will be releasing some time from now, so: XV prequel for PS4, X prequel for...3DS?..., and VI prequel for mobile?

I would love to see episodes 1 through 4 covered in a hypothetical (yet most unlikely) Xenogears prequel, since Xenogears' events are part of episode 5. Other than that, I don't know what else it could be. Final Fantasy VII already received two prequels, Before Crisis and Crisis Core, so Final Fantasy XIII would be the most relevant.

1) It's Square Enix Japan, so people can stop making Eido predictions.
2) Didn't Toriyama say that Lightning Returns was the last FFXIII title.

There are lots of franchises Square-Enix has they don't even utilize anymore, especially of franchises they acquired from Quest for example, or one off games like Einhander.

It's just seems like wasted potential to me. Wouldn't it actually be smart to just test the waters with just one game rather then say they'll make a trilogy of them without even knowing if the first of the prequel will actually do well at all?

I suppose the most logical answer would be, because it's Square-Enix.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Origins
Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Strikes Back
Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Strikes Again One Last Time We Promise Cross Our Heart Hope To Die

Some more ideas:

-A single player Final Fantasy XI prequel trilogy

-A single player Final Fantasy XIV prequel trilogy

Those games are ripe for unexplored content to create. Final Fantasy XI has interesting lore and history. I mean, you have the Crystal War and all.

As much as I liked XIII, I did'nt like XIII-2 and haven't touched LRs. More XIII is not something I want. It didn't even need sequel in the first place as they feel tacked on to a story that needed no continuation.

I don't know what prequel trilogy this could be. I kind of hate prequels so I hope it's not FF related. None of those games need prequels. If they wanted to somehow rework XIV 1.0 into a single player game though, that would be cool.

I was looking up SE games/IPs I wish this would be about on the SE Wikipedia page (anything but FF, but we know it will be FF), and I saw this:

A Deus Ex film is currently in pre-production.[74][75]

Guess I missed that announcement. What a terrible idea :(

Kingdom Hearts, I'm willing to bet. Probably console remakes of the DS/PSP/whatever else sidestory games to get people prepared for KH3's story.

It should be a prequel to VII, for maximum effect. Link Shinra to Shin-Ra, pyreflies to the lifestream, etc.

Its probably not Tomb Raider, though. Since its for Japan.

I forget what else they make atm. -.-;
