About to try Demon’s Souls - any tips?

No need to ask for tips if you've already played other games in the series, as DeS is in many ways just a simplified version of Dark Souls (and I don't mean that in a bad way), which makes sense considering it came before.

Agreed. Beat all Dark Souls games both with shield and shieldless. Wouldnt say one is better than the other IMO.

Yep, except in DSIII (rolling is vastly superior to shields in that because most of them got nerfed waaayyyyy too hard).

My opinion on the whole "shieldless" thing is this: Know how to dodge things without a shield if you have to, but use a shield if you want to. As long as you are comfortable dodging stuff as there are times where you may not want to block something (since rolls can both close distance and stuff the attack via avoidance whereas a shield block will just stop the attack), it's fine to use a shield if your build calls for one. Likewise, if you want a character build that a shield looks goofy on and care about the Fashion Souls, you'll already be in a position to know how to evasion tank stuff.

For me the one tip I would have loved to know when I played is: stages in difficulty order go like 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 1-2... (that is, not 1-1, 1-2, 1-3...).

Mother crapping dogs! Was doing okay, beat Phalanx first try - I’d died a couple of times getting to the items under the sleeping dragon, once by his tail swipe and the other by his mate’s breath - rescued the dude with the yellow armour twice and then I heard them barking. Three swarmed me and just destroyed me.

I miss Estus - it’s such an awesome way to heal but I’m sure I’ll get used to the moon grass and it feels like there isn’t as much lore in the descriptions at the moment, but the souls feel is still there. Also, when did all these people get to the Nexus?

I remember my first time I went 1-1, 2-1, 5-1, 5-2

What a disaster.

It's always good to do 4-1 pretty early, some good weapons early on in there that can last for a majority of the game. Though the enemies there can be a pain in the ass the first few times you deal with them

I was really, really pissed off about that. Having shields was an important and viable strategy in Souls that separated it from Bloodborne. The fact that they took that away from us by nerfing it to damn near useless did not endear me in the slighest.

I steamrolled through the game with 2-handing a Dark Sword +9, and then an Exiled Greatsword +10. But I wasn't happy that I was having way more success as a Ninja than as a fortress.

Holy fucking shit! I cannot believe this finally happened! I don't mean to hijack your thread OP, but yes!! After a few years of owning this game, finally! Woo hoo!

But yes OP, a tip for you. If you're going for that platinum trophy, make sue you get pure bladestone without any trouble :)

You don't need the upgrade materals in your inventory to use them at a blacksmith. Just stash them away right away. Over time they'd account for a lot of the weight you're carrying around. Stashing them away pretty much solves a majority of the item carry burden issues you'd face throughout the game.

If you walk up to some ledges, you climb up them.

Mind blowing, right?

I KNOW RIGHT

Why did this disappear from the subsequent games, I'll never understand.

What? I used shields in DS3 no problem...

The game isn’t very good at all. Easily the worst in the series. I genuinely don’t think the game is worth it.
Just play something else

Disappointed that "prepare to die" wasn't the first response.

Jk aside, the most important tip that I had to learn the hard way: you are invincible when you roll.

Magic in Demon's is the OG OP magic.

Kris Knife, Tailsman of beast, Old monk Turban, regenerator ring and Ring of Magical Sharpness. Buy 99 old spice and it's easy game all the way.

Don't expect the animations and combat to be as good as Dark Souls or Bloodborne.

A lot of mechanics are very early, there're no plunging attacks either.

It's a great game but it's also very ''primitive'', pretend that we are still in 2009 if possible.

Truth. I started my only playthrough in 2010, made it through about half of the levels then stopped and finally went back at the start of this year to finish it off. I didn't want to start over as I spent hours farming souls from the 4-2 Archstone so I could beat
Flamelurker(at SL 69...)
and I already had
Old King Doran's armour(took me 30+ minutes to kill him...)
.

The main thing I noticed after having since played Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne was how easy the AI is in Demon's Souls in comparison. It can still be brutal and it's still an amazing game of course. The NPC's, music, The Nexus etc. so good.

I remember my first time I went 1-1, 2-1, 5-1, 5-2

What a disaster.

IIRC my order was: 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 4-1, 1-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 1-4

Didn't have too much trouble outside of
Flamelurker...

My tip is to avoid tips. The whole point of the series is finding things out for yourself.
Ignore this, the game is difficult enough even with some guidance, never mind fumbling around trying to figure it out from the vague, cryptic clues dotted around. You'll just get frustrated wandering aimlessly until you find the path forward IMO.

I basically YouTube'd/GAF OT'd my way through Dark Souls 3 and found it the most enjoyable one so far. I actually like the act of interacting with those more knowledgable to ease my way, I hated the points where it was like "where do I go?" That's not fun to me.

Don't look in to guides/systems too much and enjoy.

It's the most unique of the Souls games and has a very particular vibe about it. It's also probably the easiest besides one quite hot boss.

Skip it and play the Dark Souls series. If you do enjoy it give Nioh and Bloodborne a try (respectively the best and second best of this genre).

Give me a moment, gonna need a flame shield.

Edit: just read the OP..... Oops.

Have fun!! Its a great game and i still think its the best Souls game.

I remember i bought when i was on holiday in New York and i made a side trip to a shopping mall in New Jersey because my friend was sick and it had been snowing like crazy (around christmass 2010 i believe) and i was staying in NJ anyway so getting to NYC was a pain because of the snow.
Went there to a gaming shop and i asked the guy at the counter what he tought of DS and he asked me if i am a regular gamer who plays for relaxing or a gamer looking for challenge. Told him i bit of both and i never forget his response: Buy the game and prepare to die a lot, you will die at the tutorial and thats just the beginning.
And when i left with the game he said something that i never heared before and i thought i might be some New Jersey slang or something (i am from the Netherlands).

I went to a little bar at there in the shopping mall since my friend was still sick in bed and spend some time drinking beers with locals (back in the days when i still used to drink) and had a great time. In the end when i was about to pay the bill they all covered it up and i went back drunk with having a great time for free and DS in the little plastic shopping bag.
I remember thinking.. what the fuck was this guy at the counter saying when i left.. never heared of it and couldnt remember it as well cause it sounded so random.

Then after a great holiday including meeting Vito from the Sopranos i went home. Called a friend who is also into challenging games and asked to come over to try some game i heared a lot abt.
Shit we have never played something like this before.. so fucking good!!
End of story is we were addicted as hell and finished it like a week later or something and i couldnt think about anything else.

Ow yes and the word the guy at the counter was saying?
Umbasa!

And also the best soundtrack of the whole series is in this game together with a VERY atmospheric level and bossfight.

This game is very special to me.

Have fun bro!

Stability on shields in DS3 is factually worse than the other Souls games. Combine that with several enemies' attacks (and all attacks in PvP) no longer bouncing and temporarily staggering the attacker when hitting your shield, and you get a much more dangerous game when turtling.

You had to be a lot smarter about shielding in 3 or you were asking for a guard break, and if it's player doing the guard breaking you're done for. Even though you could still use a shield (especially in PvE), parries and rolls are a lot more effective in 3.

I did ok during my first playthrough, went in almost completely blind. I only asked for help once I reached the False King. Fuck him.

I'm sure someone mentioned this, but just in case...

Royal is the easy mode.

Magic is OP, and Royal has a great starting spell with magic regeneration gear.

There is one female-specific magic regen gear you can find soon also.

That's on top of the magic reg weapons you can find or create.

Thief Ring and a good bow are pretty OP as well.

As always in Souls, it's all right to do some suicide runs to pick up great gear.

If the game is 'too hard' for you, go to the Storm place (With rolling skeletons up the front of level)

Go up to the castle gate
Turn left (hold up a shield)
You should find that the hall has you turn left again
There's a nasty black skelly with two swords, dodge/sprint past him and grab the item on the body behind him
You now have the best weapon in the game, congrats enjoy your easy mode

Are we talking about Demon's Souls? It and Dark Souls 3 are very easy to find your way through, they're really linear and you're pretty much just always moving forward. As long as you have the ability to see things you can definitely get through without a guide.

Explore everything and take your time. If you rush, you're going to die extra in addition to what you normally would otherwise.

Don't go full dex unless you're prepared to grind like a madman.

Not really. I never got the PBS, but I got my Uchi upraded to the level before you need that, and it was good enough to get me through the game comfortably. I was around level 74 when I finished.

It helps that I could absolutely nail the Shotel parry timing on this one.

Get dat Keel Smasher or Meat Cleaver, roll+R1/R2 spam = win.

I think the Meat Cleaver is my favourite weapon in the entire series.

I’m going to try and update this after each time I play - might be interesting. Obviously this is all spoiler stuff, so be warned!

Had a bit more time to play today so I got past those damned dogs to find a .....vendor. Was actually a pretty classic souls moment, thinking I might get some awesome reward but no. Ran across the bridges - took me a couple of tries to realise the carts were a hint to where the fire breath wouldn’t get you. Saw a fog gate and thought it had to be a boss arena, so I looked around for a shortcut - couldn’t find one but there is a locked door that’s bugging me still. Went through the fog door to find the Tower Knight. Realised as soon as they showed me the archers that it was similar to the One Reborn and pegged it to kill them all. Took me a couple of tries to realise hitting his feet would cause jets to come out and then he would fall over. I found it really annoying how his shield would cause such a massive shockwave - I dodged a few times that would have normally been okay, but he still hit me. Beat him and then got the message about an arch demon.

Moved on to Stonefang which is a pretty cool area. I like the idea of gradually opening up different sections of the level through the levers but it’s crazy how many cutscenes I’ve seen so far in a Souls game. Worked my way through the level - I liked the room with all the exploding barrels and the laughing enemies, as it was a good setup and then got defeated by the Armour Spider. Got caught in front of a pillar and then the flame breath went off in my face.

Overall at the moment I’m enjoying it -it’s made me realise what people mean when they say Dark Souls is the odd one out with the ability to level up without visiting a special area and the interconnected overall level design in the first part. The combat seems a bit looser at the moment compared to DS and I miss the amount of lore detail item descriptions gave you but I’m creeping around corners waiting to see what will come next so it’s scratching the itch!
