Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies SPOILER thread | So THAT'S why it's rated M

While I did enjoy the game overall, it's not without it's flaws I don't think.
I would have much, MUCH preffered the phantom to not be a masked figure, I found that stupid and anti-climactic personally. I feel it would've worked better if he wasn't a faceless, emotionless figure: it made taking him down really unsatisfying to me. Even if he was just someone who had facial reconstruction surgery, would have been more satisfying to me.

I disagree. Firstly, his face does not really matter unless it was someone you recognized, and secondly, it just adds to the mystique of the Phantom: someone who has long lost his real identity. He himself has played so many roles that he has forgotten how he really was. It also helps to setup a sequel around him and his clients.

Well that's you and that's fair enough, I'm just voicing my own opinion =). I just would've liked someone to blame rather than some faceless, uninspired spy (all my opinion btw.) I just felt like it felt really bad, and they ruined Fulbright's character for me.

Heck, why make him change faces at all? Why not have Bobby Fulbright be a regular officer in the incident 7 years prior and he becomes a detective a year prior to the events of DD at which point he gets promoted to Blackquil's right hand detective. The problem then arises that there could be suspicion on him as he would've discovered the body, but they already got away with writing in that they didn't rewind the security footage for 7 years, so I don't think that it's nessecarily something they couldn't work around.

On top of having no face I didn't like that he had no emotions. I can't really tangibly explain why, but it bothered me. I'd have preferred a (AJ Spoiler)
Kristoph
situation, whereby he appears one way but is angry or upset underneath. Having no emotion felt less satisfying to me.

...I want to point out I really loved the game overall, but the final 2 cases kind of annoyed me.

I thought the Phantom was handled really well, and them not revealing his true identity was fantastic. His descent into madness about how he doesn't know what he looks like was so awesome and chilling, and they made me go back and forth with "will they or won't they?" about his identity as he kept revealing more and more faces. And they didn't show us. That's pretty ballsy, but so effective. There's just so much intrigue surrounding him. Personally, I think it's one of the best antagonist meltdowns the series has seen. It was just so horrifying and surprisingly human compared to some others, if that makes sense.

The part where there's debris raining down on him and there are freezes... I'm getting goose bumps recalling it. It was beautifully done and I have nothing but praise for the dev team for everything after we discover he's scared.

Fuck. It stuck with me.

I won't lie: I really, really wanted to know who he was and what he looked like, but I'll accept the cockteasing because it just worked so well for me. I need to know more, so here's hoping AA6 isn't too far away.

So, just finished the game. Loved it. Small question, though.

Why is the game called "Dual Destinies"?

Edit: at first I thought it referred to the ability to play as both Apollo and Phoenix, but you end up playing as Athena as well.

I'd honestly be surprised if they mentioned the phantom at all in AA6. Notice how in this game, while it referened AJ, it never spoiled anything from it. It never talked of the antagonist, the relationship between Trucy and Apollo and certain 3rd parties or (and this one, I kind of want an answer for) how the Gavinners could reform given the events of the previous game. Also the impact of that game on the judicial system seems to have been retconned?
I know AA3 spoiled AA2, but I don't think we'll see AA6 spoiling AA5, I just have a hunch I guess, based on the fact that this game actively went out of it's way to avoid spoiling AJ.

I kind of hope that AA6 deals in part with (AJ Case 4)
Thalassa, Apollo and Trucy. I kind of want a case where they learn about their connection. I mean, Thalassa obviously knows, but...

I'm actually not that surprised that AA5 didn't spoil anything from AA4. We had to wait around 5 years for this game, and some ways, it felt sorta like a reboot. I do hope that AA6 actually touches upon some of AA4's events though, that game left quite a few threads dangling. So, assuming that AA6 happens much sooner than last time, I can see them talking about the phantom.

I would assume that he probably used Olde Japanese mannerisms in the JP version and that translated over by making him Olde English instead? I'm guessing though of course lol

I'm not sure if I would call it Olde Japanese, but his manner of speech could be considered somewhat uncouth and crude, and he also used all the "your blade is dull and cannot cut!" metaphors.

I think it refers to Athena/Blackquill. Athena's and Blackquill's destinies are heavily bound together, as seen in case 5.

It could also be due to the Phoenix/Blackquill dynamic, especially when considering the events that even started the Dark Age of the Law (and who ultimately lifts it).

I feel like since Shu Takumi wasn't involved, the team was afraid of tying up too many lose ends from AA4 with out him. I mean Maya hasn't appear in case since 2004 but couldn't even get an cameo appearance? Hopefully they can tie things up.

Beat the game last night. Some thoughts:

-Presentation wise, the game was phenomenal. I was skeptical of the transition to 3D but I'm glad they did since the 3D models are simply stellar. The animated backgrounds provided a nice, lively sense to the investigations. And the soundtrack was simply amazing, easily my favorite OST of the whole series.

-Gameplay. I felt like it was rather lacking in this one compared to the older titles. Not being able to investigate every area was a plain step backwards, along with not having a health bar outside of Court. And while I liked how they used both Apollo's Bracelet and Wright's Magatama, I thought they hardly used them at all. The Magatama in particular was great in the old games since it forced you to keep track of your evidence and keep taps on Witnesses that needed further evidence to break their locks. It added some much needed depth to the investigations scene and having that entire element removed hurt the game as a whole. Along the same lines, not being able to inspect evidence in 3D was disappointing as well since the removal was completely unnecessary as it just reduced the amount of depth from the gameplay in the end.

-The Cases. Next to T&T, this easily had most amount of solid cases for a single game. Case 1 was a fantastic way to reintroduce Wright and is probably my favorite case of the whole game. Case 2 I thought was the weakest of the bunch, as outside of L'Belle I thought it was pretty bland. Case 3 was very solid overall with Athena finally getting some time to shine and it was nice to see some actual affects of "The Dark Age of the Law" on the world. Cases 4 and 5 really should have been one big final case. Regardless, the premise of having a Space-themed case was fairly interesting although it did seem a bit random. In the end, AA1/2/3/4's final cases top it for me, but it's still a extremely solid case all around.

-Returning Characters. Honestly, I felt like a lot of them were shoehorned and had little relevance to the plot. Klavier in Case 3 was great, but I thought that he had appeared outside of that Case, perhaps helping out in Case 5 or something. Trucy really didn't have any importance to to plot, she just felt kinda "there." Even having her as a hostage didn't really mean anything. They could have followed along the exact same plotline with any other person being held hostage replacing her. Edgeworth was the only returning character I thought they did well. Him turning up to be the Chief Prosecutor was great and he actually had a role in the overall plot unlike Klavier and Trucy.
I'll reserve judgment on Pearls since I think she has a role in the DLC Case.

-The Phantom. Let me say that it was an amazing twist that completely came out of the left field. Having the main detective of the game be the main villain was a great decision by the writers and something that I doubt anyone saw coming at all. My main complaint with him was that it never felt like had a masterplan like Von Karma, Kristoph, Gant, and Dahlia did before. And he certainly didn't command any of the power like the previous villains had. As for him getting shot at the end, it's a a very obvious plot pint that will need to be resolved in AA6 and it'll be interesting to see where they run with it.

-The voices. This is going to seem like a minor nitpicking, but I absolutely hated the most of the voicework. Wright sounded too young, Edgeworth and Klavier sounded way too different from their original "Objection!" sound effects, and Apollo's voice was so-so.

-I didn't like how barely any of the plot-lines from AJ were mentioned. I understand that it's been 5 years since AJ came out and how they wanted this to be a jumping-on point for new fans, but they should have at least mentioned the Jurist System and tied that up. Even a line saying that it never took off would have sufficed. Though I get not mentioning Apollo and Trucy's relationship since they can easily save that for a later game.

My overall opinion? A very solid entry in the series. It lacked a lot of the depth that the original games had, but it easily made up for that in it's cases and presentation.

Yeah the Phantom's reveal was awesome. I found out when Phoenix did too and was just saying no way.... when I had to present who it would be. I loved this game but I loved every single AA game. I need more! When are we supposed to get the DLC?

I honestly would have just accepted a completely dark abyss of a face with just the eyes staring out, but that might be a little too literal

It doesn't matter what the Phantom's real face looks like because it will almost certainly be disappointing. It's better left unanswered.

Still, I totally didn't see that coming.

If I had some gripes with the game, it would be that the voices (beyond court shouting) didn't really fit the characters, the anime cutscenes are bad and they clash with the game's artstyle, and the investigations parts lacked deductive reasoning puzzles like Psyche-locks. I also thought the Mood Matrix was fairly vague so it's a good thing you don't get penalized for missing your mark.

As for what I liked, fantastic character models and animations, investigating 3D environments, each case has little to no plot holes and the cases themselves were pretty good, writing is sharp and witty (when you're not eying a type or missing word lol), nice cameos, great breakdowns. Shifting protagonists allowed characters to both be in a supporting and lead roles, which is great because internal dialogue allows more of a character's personality to shine. I also really like Blackquill as the prosecutor since he really gets under your skin.

Question about a translation in case 3:
There's a point in the game where a tape recording of a woman saying "I'm gonna kill you" or something similar is discovered. In the Japanese version, that phrase is said as "koroshite yaru", and Athena managed to trick the court into thinking it was "Kora, Shizuya Rei!", (Hugh's name in Japanese) which roughly translates to "Hey, Shizuya Rei!" How did the English version handle this?

The tape says "You're a goner!" which gets to "Hugh O'conner" by some brain excersizes.

For how much of a big deal it was made that Hugh O'Conner isn't actually a genius, he seems pretty talented (though I suppose it took him 7 more years than his colleagues).

Edit: Was there a character who said "YOLO" at some point? I seem to remember people mentioning that, but I might have missed it.

I think Robin says it when you present some evidence to her. Can't recall what the evidence was though.

Stayed up a few hours later than I should finishing it up last night.

Initial thought: It is up there with the best in the series.

I think what I admired about Dual Destiny is that for the most part, it succeeded in doing justice (ha!) to the breadth of its cast. Everyone got their moment to shine not only on a game level in terms of their own cases, but also in the final showdown. Phoenix bullshitted his way through in ways only he could, Apollo showed gumption and addressed his inner conflict, while Athena transcended her perky sidekick persona to show that she became who she was because personal choice and sheer will, not merely in service to some defined trope.

This level of balance between what was essentially three main characters was extraordinarily difficult to achieve (look at AA4 where Nick outshone Apollo), so while there were some minor niggles and flaws, they never detracted from the successful execution of the vision of a very ambitious story. Props.

I loved Fulbright as the final villain. Seasoned by a series full of ridiculous twists, I caught on to it a little earlier than I should of (just because I knew it had to be someone in the profiles for maximum effect), but it was still extraordinarily satisfying to see how the chain of events implicated him. Thematically I thought his lack of identity and emotional awareness made sense, as the trio relied on trust, hope, courage to defeat this formless agent of despair, doubt, and fear.

Other more minor things:

- Cameos were well done and organic for Klavier, Pearl, and Edgeworth. Made sense in the story and the universe, never overstayed their welcome, and played key roles in advancing the narrative. This was fanservice done right.

-Capcom, save your money and cut back on the anime cutscenes next time. The only two worth their salt were the beginning with Nick on the phone and Edgeworth's boss intro and showdown. Rest ranged from being unnecessary to outright cringe-worthy.

-What a lovely, lovely soundtrack. Overall, it was less catchy than more simple tunes of the past, but the instrumentation and depth within each track when listened to with a decent set of headphones was an incredible treat. One of the best soundtracks in a series renowned for its music. Kudos.

-Didn't expect to like Simon as much as I did when I first saw his sword/samurai/prisoner gimmick. Dug his "SILENCE" and his counters. I liked even towards the end, he doesn't really lighten up very much. I think Athena says something about one doesn't just shake off seven years of grumpiness. Solid prosecutor.

-Animations: What more needs to be said? They're the B-E-S-T! (Not including breakdowns, favourites included Robin's finger wag, Filch's hat tip, Scuttlebutt's happy sway, Juniper's hearts, Starbuck's space swim)

-Big fan of the streamlining. It made the game easier for sure, but I appreciated them focused on improving things that work and cutting things that were more exercises in tedium than providing actual fun.

-I loved the variety of the mechanics - kept things fresh. Wanted a bit more depth to each, but I supposed it's for the best to keep some twists for the next game.

Think that's it for now. It was worth the six year wait, and I hope AA6 comes sooner than that.

Some random thoughts:

-Apollo had an actual character this time around! His character arc was really endearing, and I like how they made you think they were going to make him all dark, broody anime hero and then turned that concept on its head.

-They handled having 3 protagonist really well. This is the most surprising part of the game to me, since games with multiple protagonist usually don't handle it very well. In this game, though, the plot was tightly written enough that all of these characters fully earned their presence and they all got their time to shine.Compare that with AA4 where Apollo felt like a tagalong in his own game and Phoenix was almost unrecognizable due to the lack of any of his old relationships.

-Also surprising: the overarching story was really tightly written. All of it fits well together and the way the game unfolds more and more of the central mystery was really well-paced. Most other AA games, even the great ones, could get pretty clumsy with this. See: AA3, where it felt like the entire middle part of the game was a huge distraction.

-They also handled all of the cameos and callbacks to earlier games really well. All the characters that showed up in AA5 felt like they belonged there, rather than being obnoxious and tiring like Larry and Oldbag were in AAI. I also didn't mind Maya not showing up: The letter was a cute, non-obstructive way to show she's still a friend to Phoenix, which was enough for me -- gotta leave something for AA6 anyway :p

-I'm glad they just ignored some of the more stupid stuff from Apollo Justice, like Apollo and Trucy being siblings or Lamiroir's continuing dumbass adventures. I hope they just end up handwaving that stuff away or just never bringing it up again.

I've been disappointed with every post-AA3 AA game, so I kept my expectations in check for this one, but I still think it's way better than it has any right to be. Shu Takumi didn't even write it! Yet it turned out be better than most of the trilogy.

Yeah, this game was awesome. I enjoyed every single minute of it.

My jaw dropped to the floor when I realized that Fulbright was the main villain. I did not see that coming at all! At least Ema can return for AA6 now.

I'm eagerly awaiting the DLC case now. A little more AA goodness to finish off this game. ^_^

I like Ema as much as the next guy but I need some Gumshoe back in my life. Even if he is only the cameo detective for a case. He must be doing good for himself at this point. We all know that Edgeworth did like his pocket detective and with edgy being chief prosecutor, I expect gumshoe got some type of promotion.

I'm expecting Gumshoe's triumphant return in AA6 as the new Head of Criminal Affairs.

He also married Maggey and have the most accident-prone children ever.

AA needs to get really fucking dark. Their child is the victim of the 3rd case.

My God, Fulbright = the Phantom. I loved the twist, but I still need to accept he...he...

...But I b-believe in "In Justice we Trust". I...I laughed t-the ass out of when, in the third case, Athena (mah love) and Fulbright cooperate for bringing the flag down and all their exchanges are "In justice we trust!", a-a-and he was so great and...GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH

Help me to accept it :(

If it makes you feel better (or worse) Bobby Fulbright was a real character that the phantom murdered, we just never met him but knowing how the phantom operates, he would have been playing Fulbright exactly like the real thing so, in a sense, he was still a good character and the Phantom was the bad character.

I know that.

Damn, I'm starting understanding what some Gurren Lagann fans felt when Nia died in the finale. There IS a different dimension where Bobby is still alive and kicking and shouting the hell out of his justice. I'LL FIND YOU BOBBY, 'CAUSE...IN JUSTICE WE TRUST! IN JUSTICE WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!

No, seriously, that was absolutely out of nowhere. And one of the reasons I freaking loved this Ace Attorney. Even if...Bobby ;_;

You should have suspected him when he brought in that piece of evidence that was just way too perfect.

there's always the chance that we see fulbright in a flashback case in a later game

i hope not because i miss gumshoe :(

i'll allow fulbright a cameo but NOTHING MORE

I think I overanalyzed the Fulbright thing after reading this thread by accident before and seeing that spoiler. I half expected them to go back through the previous cases and show the evidence he forged (although I guess that's still implicit, perhaps).

The breakdown was harrowing as hell and made me feel satisfied despite messing things up for myself to an extent. I couldn't quite believe that was the end after that though! Not showing his identity...thought provoking as hell to me.

I still firmly believe that showing his face would have served no purpose, it would have been a generic face and it doesn't matter. As for the evidence forging, what do you mean? He never forged anything in earlier cases.

I mean I expected it to turn out that he did. He could have been doing a bunch of stuff during that year, and why expect him to behave perfectly? I'm not claiming this is anything but speculation.

He only cared about the moon rock and the voice analysis data, why would he put manipulations into anything else? Once those two things were smoothed out, he would have just disappeared, the last thing he wanted to do is leave even more of a mark behind.
