Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies SPOILER thread | So THAT'S why it's rated M

So, what is everyone's top 5 tracks in this game? There are SO </L'Belle> many good songs to choose from. I think mine are...

1. Athena Cykes ~ Courtroom Révolutionnaire
2. Florent L'Belle ~ Je suis L'Belle
3. Apollo Justice ~ A New Chapter of Trials! 2013
4. Yuri Cosmos ~ Head to the Center of the Universe
5. Announce the Truth 2013

(Thanks to Bolt for uploading the soundtrack versions of these songs. They all have nice little endings to them that you don't hear in the actual game, which is always a nice touch when it comes to OSTs.)

Time for the long-awaited sequel to "Zak Gramarye Is a Jerk!"

1. Athena Cykes ~ Courtroom Révolutionnaire
2. Apollo Justice ~ I'm Fine!
3. Apollo Justice ~ A New Chapter of Trials! 2013
4. Revisualization ~ Synaptic Resonance
5. Yuri Cosmos ~ Head to the Center of the Universe

These were very hard to pick. I also really love the new Announce the Truth, and I think my heart was telling me to put in the Mood Matrix theme. This game has suuuch a great OST.

Top contenders?

Who are the others, if I may ask?

Kristoph and Klavier Gavin, of course, with Magnifi Gramarye being the only other really considerable sort.

Magnifi was a rotten old wizard. He's as responsible for the discarding of Apollo as Zak, if not more so, considering that he essentially uses his only daughter's tragic circumstances to gain absolute control over his pupils--something he ultimately already had. He lets Apollo be thrown aside, then he himself shunts his only daughter off to who knows where before she winds up dumped, blind, and amnesiac in Borginia. His bizarre suicide pact and decision to kill himself ruins the lives of his pupils and sets the entire Gramarye case in motion. Valant played his part, but in the words of Gigidigi, "Magnifi Gramarye is a jerk too."

Kristoph we all know. He sees the wizards as his chance to gain fame and fortune, and perhaps feeling that Phoenix's success and the exposure of all that corruption in the Prosecutor's office will make people turn a blind eye to a defense attorney doing wrong, he sets out to make a name for himself. He has the entire thing planned out to gain from Gramarye's case, and has it set up so that his little brother will take the loss that will ensure his own rise to power. Something evil inside the man, something so horrible that Phoenix in seven years is never able to understand, motivates Kristoph to kill three people (he succeeds in doing it twice), and then there's that unexplained demon on his arm. Since we've seen actual demons in Ace Attorney, I move that Kristoph actually was demonic to a degree.

But Klavier doesn't get out of this squeaky, either. Kristoph's plan backfires, and he has to initiate a second plan to frame Phoenix on the fly and then use Phoenix's fall to exalt himself. All the glory Kristoph had meant to claim for himself in that trial, though, lands square in Klavier's lap. And Klavier knew. He knew his brother had something to do with the false evidence, and Klavier does more than fail to mention this. He force-pins the crime on Phoenix for Kristoph, then he does not mention any of this as Phoenix is stripped of his badge and sent dishonorably from court. In the final trial Klavier claims there's a darkness in his heart, and well there should be. Because he knew his brother had done it, but he doesn't investigate it, doesn't question it, doesn't speak out, and instead lets it sit and rot for 7 long years. And why would Klavier do that? Because of all the people who really stood to gain in the end, let me ask you, of everyone involved in AA4, who stands to gain most?

Not Magnifi, he was just a jerk, same as Zak. Not Valant, because when he finally has the chance to have what he wants, he turns himself in instead. Not Kristoph, no, he stood to lose the most. But Klavier? Klavier had everything to win. He was the prosecutor who defeated Phoenix Wright once and for all. Where Edgeworth, von Karmas, Payne and Godot all could not, Klavier did, and that must have made him famous and put him square with the Prosecutor's big wigs. And though Klavier knew the truth of what had happened with the forgery, he sits on his hands about it for seven years, saying nothing and investigating nothing. Phoenix is the perfect public fall-guy. And when Phoenix finally has what he needs to strike back at those who sent him down, there's Kristoph as the perfect fall guy legally. Klavier remains a powerful, respected prosecutor and has profited from falsely disbarring Phoenix and then sending his brother to jail for it.

That said, Klavier's not all bad. He's just not nearly as innocent or victim as he makes himself out to be in the last trial, and I hate him for that.

I was kind of surprised there was no explicit reference to Fulbright's hand, or that he wasn't hiding anything behind the shades

Apollo Justice Spoilers

I agree with you on Magnifi and Kristoph, but Klavier didn't know for sure that Kristoph was behind the forgery until Apollo revealed it in court 7 years later. He was always suspicious of how Kristoph knew about it but he trusted his brother to a fault. Klavier is like Edgeworth in that he is after the truth in court, not guilty verdicts. If he knew the truth behind the forgery he never would have stayed silent even if it ment his brother being charged, as shown in the last case of AJ. I actually think Klavier's biggest problem in AJ is that he wasn't evil enough.

EDIT: Decided to spoiler this just in case.

See, I'd like to think that, but it doesn't fly with me:
Klavier suspected Kristoph but never investigated him? Naaaah.

Even if he did investigate Kristoph nothing much would have come up. Phoenix only found out when he broke Drew's psyche locks and discovered that Vera was the true forger and even then Vera only gives Nick a couple of vauge clues. He doesn't get confirmation for another 7 years when Zak tells him that Kristoph was his lawyer first. It would be almost impossible for Klavier to have found any of that out, no matter how much he investigated. Even if he did manage to discover all of that it wouldn't matter anyway because there was no concrete evidence of it, Kristoph even brings this up in the last case. If it wasn't for the juror system Kristoph would likely never be found guilty of the forgery.

Top 5 tracks is a very difficult task. Very much depends on the mood. While I don't think there's that knockout piece that towers above everything else, I do think AA5 has the best overall soundtrack in terms of scope and emotional resonance. High, high praise for a series famous for its music.

Right now:

Pursuit - Keep Pressing On
Just a godly beat that sucks me in every time.

Phanton UNKNOWN Not what I expect from an AA track, but when it picks up @ 1:25, WOW. Boss track in every sense.

Athena's Courtoom Révolutionnaire A sweeping piece with a ton of heart and perk. Suits Athena to a Tee.

Bobby Fulbright Amazingly ridiculous piece. I love it. One of those instances where the music totally helps in misdirection.

Reminiscence - Tragic Memories Powerful sad piece that stands toe to toe with anything in the series.

Bonus:
The End Goddddaaaamn. This piece has EVERYTHING. Two separate and incredible jazzy riffs in the first third, mellows down into a beautifully melancholy piece with bright interludes, returns to a more dramatic and ominous courtroom bit and ending on an epic and grand finale. It just sounds a lot of love was put into the piece.

The true cause of the dark age of the law is a
disbarred attorney creating a jury system that was used for one trial only with jury members that he selected so he could pin the forgery he was disbarred for on somebody else without concrete evidence and then managing to get his attorney's badge back after his chief prosecutor friend who used to forge evidence back in the day pulls some strings for him.

Case 3 was INSANE. I'm so used to the 3rd case being weak this one hit me out of left field. I was kinda skeptical about the change in writers, but I'm glad this game put my fears to rest.

Working on the end of the second case right now. I don't know what the deal is with people hating
the new detective. He's just your stereotypical HOT BLOODED JUSTICE anime idiot. It's not like the series isn't already filled to the brim with obnoxious, overused trope-y cardboard cutouts pretending to be characters, from that moronic police officer in the first game, to the two-faced Tiger guy, to Phineas Filch, Florent L'belle, and even Gumshoe himself.
I mean, I don't really like him, but he's nowhere near the game-ruining sore I was expecting after all that vitriol.

He went thataway!

Top 5 AA5 songs? HAH HOW ABOUT TOP 10 OF ALL GAMES AND SERIES OVERALL HERE I GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It's totally impossible for me to just list ten tracks as my favorites for the whole series. I need at least 50, because the whole OST is just too amazing.

So my question is how long until it just becomes an open secret like the identity of the 'true killers' in Zero Escape, Persona 4 and Dangan Ronpa, which you can't fucking escape if you exist on certain areas of the net because fanart will just pop up and you'll be like "FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

That said, in the first few days I saw a couple of pictures of people celebrating Fulbright and his apparent awesomeness (well, to be fair, he is pretty awesome) so iunno

Fulbright fanart is pretty funny. It seems it's popular to put Fulbright, Blackquill, and Athena together in fanart.

ta5lEtf.jpg

As well as Blackquill x Athena shipping, which to be honest I'm not a huge fan of, but oh well.

I really don't know how I feel about this game compared to the others yet.

As for final cases though: AA3 > AA2 > AA5 > AA1 > AAI > AA4

Athena / Blackquill shipping is kind of awkward considering the age difference and circumstances during their first encounter, Blackquill probably thinks of Athena the same way Gray Fox thought of Naomi in Metal Gear Solid.

I totally ship Apollo / Juniper though. I'm such a loser that I even drew fanart of it.

Did Edgeworth ever actually forge evidence? The only scummy think I remember him doing was hiding an updated autopsy report.

Did Edgeworth ever actually forge evidence? The only scummy think I remember him doing was hiding an updated autopsy report.

He used forged evidence unwittingly during the SL-9 Incident. That truth was uncovered years later in the middle of 1-5 but he got lucky as the Prosecutors Office received most of the heat for it. It gave him a lot of bad rep though and it's part of the reason he decided to leave.

I know that.

Damn, I'm starting understanding what some Gurren Lagann fans felt
when Nia died
in the finale.
There IS a different dimension where Bobby is still alive and kicking and shouting the hell out of his justice. I'LL FIND YOU BOBBY, 'CAUSE...IN JUSTICE WE TRUST! IN JUSTICE WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh COME ON. Really dood? Damnit :(

On topic: That was awesome and I want more. When is DLC?

I was kind of surprised there was no explicit reference to Fulbright's hand, or that he wasn't hiding anything behind the shades

Same, the moment we found out he's the killer, I was like, "Oh so that explains that mark on his right hand!" But it was never brought up.

And I don't know if we're spoilering the previous games for those who haven't played them but AAI/AA1/AA3 spoilers below (sorry if this stuff's already been discussed):

I also kinda wish we at least saw who Fulbright really was. I didn't mind the whole The person with the secret identity's original identity is actually a secret identity, too! thing with Callisto, but making the main villain be like that didn't feel as satisfying to me. Plus, I didn't really get the whole "It's the dark age of the law because a lawyer was caught forging evidence and a prosecutor murdered someone!" thing. I mean, Manfred Von Karma was a respected prosecutor for 40 years and he was found to be a murderer ...? And, not as big of a deal I suppose, but Godot was also a murderer? The dark age of the law stuff felt present in the first game, too, with all the forgery accusations going around (especially in Rise From the Ashes, where the CHEIF PROSECUTOR admits to forging evidence). But whatever, those games came out years ago and this stuff didn't really ruin the game for me. :P

And I saw that clear foreshadowing that Maya will be in AA6. 8) Don't let me down this time, Capcom. Edgeworth's appearance was okay, but Pearl really felt thrown in for no reason. I really enjoyed the fact that when Phoenix's "new" support group (Apollo, Athena, Trucy) went MIA, his old one quickly came to the rescue (Maya, Pearl, Edgeworth).

He's not Apollo, you know =P

I like Apollo, though.

Even if he did investigate Kristoph nothing much would have come up. If it wasn't for the juror system Kristoph would likely never be found guilty of the forgery.

The Jurist system found Vera not guilty. Kristoph's guilt was made evident, but his trial was not that one. And as a prosecutor, Klavier had far more tools in his arsenal than Phoenix, who had been stripped of his badge and saddled with parental responsibility in the same day. Klavier had access to people and he had something no one else had: the identity of the anonymous tip that Phoenix would use that forged evidence. But Klavier does nothing with it, and Kristoph kills a (terrible) man as a consequence.

Fulbright fanart is pretty funny. It seems it's popular to put Fulbright, Blackquill, and Athena together in fanart.

As well as Blackquill x Athena shipping, which to be honest I'm not a huge fan of, but oh well.

I can see Blackquill and Athena's mom, maybe (although I'm certain Aura and Metis will be vastly more popular), but not Blackquill and Athena. At most he saw her as a sibling. Athena and Apollo is where it is at.

No way. Apollo x Junie 4eva.

I hate myself for that sentence.

TRUSTING IN JUSTICE WAS A LIE DAMNIT

Man, what a ride. Dual Destinies totally delivered and honestly I consider it as the second best entry in the series. First case was good, second found it's groove at the end, the third one was awesome, the fourth crazy and the fifth was batshit insane. Music was amazing, the animations are superb (Judge with Haka on his head hehe) and the twist at the end caught me off guard.

And to think, Shu Takumi wasn't involved with this title. Thank god we're getting the DLC case and Layton vs. Ace Attorney next year.

Some thought;

- I like Athena; she's not the traditional dopey character with random thoughts like Maya, Pearls or Trucy, but she fits in with Phoenix and Apollo. Loved the dialogues between her and the guys.

- I never disliked Apollo, but as he was in AJ: AA he wouldn't cut it. As a protegé under Phoenix they made him more awesomer. People like to joke about the "Raiden-effect", but it's been demonstrated in DD that it's real.

- Loved the cameo's of Trucy, Pearl and Edgeworth. Gave the game just enough fan service to not overshadow newcomers.

- It was pretty obvious that Professor Means was the real culprit, but the twists and turns it took in that case to finally draw out that conclusion was pretty awesome. I actually laughed with the reveal that Robin was a girl and Hugh was a 25 year old dude. Means however did everything right with his manly Mohawk and his aggressive writing on the blackboard. Best part was when he snapped and the crowd constantly throwing chalk at him.

- ... .... it took me an hour to see that Starbuck's hairdo was shaped like the nose of a rocket. lol

- Blackquil was a great prosecutor; his Samurai-style was great and loved his animations. the one where he faces the court with his back is nice. I love the small details as well. Everytime when he slams his fists, you can see Haka being surprised.

- During the final case, during the moment I finally knew that Fool Bright was actually the fantom took me by surprise. I had no idea. I think that's some are disappointed that the final showdown didn't feel as epic compared to previous last cases because we all knew from the beginning we had to face von Karma and others. Every case you completed in past games were building towards to that final battle. It's pretty much the same for Dual Destinies, but nobody expected Fulbright. We were all fooled by his Gumshoe-ish character that we all love.

Right pal?

:( Fudge you Fool Bright.

There's one thing about Fulbright's reveal that I'm a little disappointed about.

It should have been a Thought Line/Revisualization scene. Can you imagine going into Phoenix's head, maybe with an allegro version of the music playing, going over the entire game, bit by bit, ruling out suspects one at a time until the inevitable stares you in the face. "BOBBY FULBRIGHT IS THE PHANTOM!"

Boom. Silence. And a face that says "No way!" on Phoenix. I mean, presenting the profile was awesome and all, but that moment should have been milked for all its worth.

Well, the thing with the thought lines is that they're really easy to solve.

Fulbright's reveal made you have to look at evidence and go ... NO WAY.

But yeah, thought line's one of my two fav songs along with mood matrix so it would have been amazing done that way as well.

I also think that Revisualization should have been used to deduce the Phantom's identity. Would have made the reveal even more incredible.

I think those thought line things were the coolest thing introduced in the entire game. The first time Apollo does it it is amazing.

As in new mechanic? Hm, well there was just the Mood Matrix and the logic train, right? Between the two, I certainly preferred the latter as it provides player agency to the defense's epiphanies instead of just watching dialogue of them coming to some inner realization the player's not privy to.

The Mood Matrix was cool too and I loved the first time it overloaded, but I think more could be done with it to make it really shine.

Yeah, he mains the logic train. The music is amazing in those parts.

Yeah, I prefer the logic train to the Mood Matrix, although I concede that like Perception and Psyche-Locks, there is a lot of room for Mood Matrix to grow.

Can someone explain some aspects of Case 3 to me?

Namely
How the hell did O'Conner get his hand injured? We see him operating the crane at 6PM the night of the murder (so both his hands work), and somehow the next day it's injured? I mean, if he's innocent and all, what the hell was he doing up in the art room bleeding all over the pottery? And doing a creepy zombie-walk down the hallway?

I got nearly every decision in the Thought Line wrong for cases 2 and 3 lol. Good thing there's no penalty for doing so, and they explain in detail why those choices were wrong. Listening to that PSHHHHAAAAW sound is really satisfying too.

Did you finish Case 3? They go over this. He hurt himself when opening Myriam's booby trapped envelope with her script in it

I have to agree, the Thought Route was my favorite new mechanic of the game.
My one complaint with it was how you didn't get penalized for guessing incorrectly. Would have made for a nice balance between the standard way of Presenting Evidence and using the Thought Route to finish off everything.

So, playing GK2, case 2 (because I'm on an AA high after this game and my Japanese has gotten a smidge better since the last time I tried) and... whenever I hear
the circus theme, I think "I'M BACK IN HELL, SAVE ME." 2-3 is the worst case ever. Don't remind me it exists. Please.

On this same note, Case I2-2 also has Missile, and Missile saves the case for me.
