Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies SPOILER thread | So THAT'S why it's rated M

soo great.

wish fullbright had a few more spy gadgets. missed potential.

i don't even get what his little watch thing he threw did. was it a chain blade or something?

i think so, but it was a really disappointing animation.

All of fulbright's animations post-revelation were kind of crap tbh, except for his calm "GTFO" animation. They saved his breakdown for post-masking, but that kinda sucked... I'd liked to have seen Fulbright breakdown.

I really thought they were going to do something with his shades, since they seemed like a classic part of Phoenix Wright's "casually normal detail becomes vitally important" line of comedic character design

In a way, his twitch (as seen by Apollo) was rather disappointing. Should have been his eyes subtley bugging out independently to the rest of his face/mask behind those shades.

I loved Fulbright's plain face, but yeah his actual gadget stuff was pretty eh. The breakdown Phoenix face was actually kinda creepy, but I would have preferred to see the Fulbright we knew as the face breaking down.

hope it was the assassin dude from AA2 that took him down.

thinking back, the biggest chuckle i got was from the silly detention guard aka the dark lord's underling.

Just finished the game....yep, Fulbright as the phantom got me hahaha. Very good game overall, very consistent! I really, really hope there will be an Ace attorney 6 someday!

Also, is it just me, or are the 3D models even better than the sprites? Seriously, I was surprised how good the whole animation work was! I can't really understand how some reviews bashed them!

Last thing: about the DLC case, I was wondering how big the case is...is it like a final case, or more like a middle case? Thanks

The Judge was awesome as usual. I love that he's basically saying what the players are thinking if you played the series since the beginning.

Man, I've been feeling some serious withdrawal since I finished this game a few hours ago... I don't like that. I feel like I need a hug. Or to play AA1 again, since I haven't played it since it came out back in 2005.

The judge kicked ass in this one. That's all.

I think my series ranking at this point is: 3 > 5 > 2 > AJ = 1 > AAI

I like that the judge didn't seem to be as senile as he was in AA4.

They also seem to have completely swept away the fact that the Judge, who is allegedly a fair-minded dude, flat-out told Phoenix he didn't care to hear his side of the forged evidence story. Seems to me this Judge is as responsible as anyone for the Dark Age of the Law.

IN JUSTICE WE TRUST :(

Finished about half an hour ago. Really great! Really wiped away the bitter, disgusting taste of AAI.

The writing definitely wasn't as strong as the original trilogy and AJ (I saw "cacophony of emotions" in there at one point. My god) and they needed to de-anime the dialogue, but it didn't ruin the game or anything.

The anime cutscenes can go away :/

It was much easier and generally pressing statements, one of the lawyers would let you know if that was the OBJECTION! statement and an idea of what to present.

Other than that though, loved it. Great characters, great music, really loved seeing the three main characters from "first" person and third, loved all three of the mains. Loved Fulbright :(((((((

And even though he has hideous hair, Blackquill was awesome.

I was laughing pretty hard and Phoenix and Phoenix? objecting at each other and then the Phoenix-mask like...melting lol.

Finished the game about two nights ago and I haven't had much time to really talk about it until now. Having a day or two to kind of step away and digest it as a whole has been interesting.

As far as the ending of the game itself, how the final case is concluded, there are basically two aspects of it that I felt fell a little short, but I see why it happened the way it did. 1: I wish Athena had been the first to realize that they could use her earring as a moon rock sample. So much of the case was about resolving her feelings towards her mother and finally clearing her demons away, and she was the one to mention in the first place what the earring was made out of, so it felt odd that Phoenix had to point it out and she was slow to catch on.

Second...I wish that sniper had gotten a headshot and just killed the Phantom, rather than miraculously missing anything potentially vital. First, what a terrible job that sniper did, and secondly I think it would have done a lot to really drive home the gravity of the situation and shut out the potential of the Phantom revealing anything.

Anyway, those two points aside, I really liked the dynamic that they put together with the three main characters, the mood matrix felt slightly corny at first glance but I think they did a nice job with it overall, and while the setups for the murders feel like they're getting increasingly Rube Goldbergian as the series continues, in general I liked the cases and of course the characters. I felt like there was an oddly small amount of personal acknowledgment between Athena and Simon prior to the final case, though, considering how important they seemed to be to each other.

Now the long wait begins for the next game, if it even makes it to America. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaangh....

The worst part about Fulbright's reveal is that in the end, the personality was authentic - we can only assume that the real Bobby Fulbright was just as friendly, justice-driven, and optimistic as he played him. This means it's not the same as any other heel reveal, because we know that the nice guy did die back then.

R.I.P. nice guy

Hmm... in general, I consider the rank to be

3 > 1 > 5 > 2 > AAI > 4.

I really, really want them to bring AAI2 to the US. Really really really.

Maybe we could get another AAI game set during the 7 year gap and meet the original Fulbright

That rappelling animation was hilarious though.

Hahah, that one was great. Only did it once though, the watch stuff was more prevalent.

Means easily had the best breakdown in the game. Probably one of the best in the series, I loved the blackboard.

That would be great. When did they discover Fulbright's body?

It sounded like the just discovered it in the middle of the trial, but that didn't seem right.

Going backwards and having Fulbright pop up at some time would be really eerie, regardless if it's the actual detective or the post murdered one.

They just said that a previously unidentified corpse from a year ago was really Fulbright's. Obviously, the body was mutilated beyond recognition, and they don't even know when or how the real man died. Poor guy.

That moment cracked me up. Out of nowhere, he goes to rappel out of the courtroom, Phoenix "asks" where he's going and he just returns to his bench, plain faced and says "nowhere."

Semantics, but I'd say that's more of a transformation than a breakdown (with his actual breakdown being where the crowd throws crap at him and his teeth crack). It's like when (AA2 spoiler)
Engarde reveals his scars and takes out a glass of wine as opposed to when he scratches his face to hell.

They seemed to have a hell of a lot of trouble with witnesses in this game. Ted Tonate threatening to blow everyone up, Yuri losing control and crashing through the door, Fulbright trying to spidey out of there. Get that shit under control Udgey.

I never actually thought about that. That's actually depressing.

I also was waiting for them to try to get Fulbright to remove his glove on the hand he was stabbed on. As soon as they started revealing he was the killer I assumed that the odd knot on the back of his hand was scarring from when he was stabbed by Athena.

The white/black ponytail is amazing.

Absolutely hideous :p

Crueeeeella deVille! Crueeeella deVille! If she doesn't scare you, no evil thing will!

For serious. :( I was just really sad because I really liked him. He was probably one of my favourite new characters. Just super optimistic and his enthusiasm to ~reform~ Blackquill was adorable. And the whole "I'm conflicted because Blackquill isn't doing justice right!"

:((((( RIP real Bobby.

Oh wow, that's harsh. The phantom sure is evil. Was asking since it may have been possible to tie in the body with a case if they were to create a new AAI, but I guess not.

While the entire Means transformation was perfect and one of the funniest moments in the series, I'd say that the actual "breakdown" itself - with the crowd booing - was a classic as well.

They could certainly do a case with the real Fulbright, but the Phantom did such an effective impersonation that no one was able to notice the switch. It would be like Case 2 Fulbright to Case 3 Fulbright - the player and the characters wouldn't even think twice about it. If they had him in a future AA game, that would be pretty harrowing for people who knew the ending to AA5.

I also think it's fair to say that Maya will probably appear if they do make a sequel, since they are hinting at it pretty strongly. On the subject of callback characters, I'm disappointed that:

A. Pearls didn't have a scene where she channeled Metis, and

B. Wendy Oldbag wasn't working security at the Space Center.

For your first point, this game seemed quite distanced from the rest of the series in order to rope in new players, so explaining the details behind channeling would take quite some time and interrupt the flow of the case, especially since I would assume that Metis would know that Athena didn't kill her, and that's the big drama driving the case.

And I love Oldbag's character, but she had her fill in AAI, since she appeared twice.

I laughed pretty good when Fulbright tried to make his quick escape...though I wonder why he bothered to come back, or why he didn't just leave again when it started to become apparent that his story wasn't being bought.

Bolded is precisely why it's so difficult to have Pearl and Maya still around much, unless we assume that they've learned absolutely nothing in the eight years they've been away in "training." Every murder victim would have to be killed in such a manner that they didn't see their killer, and the card has already been played previously in the series where a channeled spirit fingered the wrong suspect, so revisiting that well again wouldn't have as much impact.

For now, I'm very curious about a potential AA6, what sort of situation they can set up for the next potential "final boss." Considering we've already had opposing prosecutors, defendants, defense attorneys, enemies from the past, the chief of police, an international ambassador, and now the game's "main" detective, what the hell is left that they could introduce as an adversary that would still have some personal weight to it?
The judge becomes a murderer?

I was more referring to a post-trial "heart to heart" dealie, or something. One of 'dos emotional reunions.

And yeah, but we have to remember that the last time Phoenix had to suffer Oldbag was in Justice for All.

The judge becomes a murderer?

Back in the days of AJ, I toyed around with the idea that the judge would be fingered for murder, and we would have a villain judge. This game kind of makes it a bit hard, since I feel that Means was kind of "that" role somewhat. My best guess is that Lamiroir will be a part of the hypothetical AJ3 - unless it's resolved in the DLC case.

The judge becomes a murderer?

Yep. But not Udgey; he could never do that.

Really, I'm not sure we always need a revolutionary final boss for the cases to reach a satisfying resolution (my favorite breakdown in AA5 was actually Ted Tonate's because of how broken he looked as well as his monologue).

Then again, if the final culprit is to match the trend of having a part in a main game's overarching story, I guess they could also revisit something they did before. They'd have to really pull something great off to have it be a big surprise after Fulbright.

The more I let in sink in, the more saddening it is to me that the real Fulbright is dead. I was really starting to like "him" later on in the game. I wonder who the detective will be in the next game, assuming there is one.

Bring Ema back dang it. Lana too! Bringing Ema back allows us that additional cameo.

I'd love to see Gumshoe appear as the Chief of Police too. Make it happen!

Yeah, that was the thing. I was like "alright, whatevz" at first, but I think it was precisely when Fulbright and Athena exchanged "IN JUSTICE WE TRUST" chants in the third case that I was like "yeah, this dude's cool."

I bet it would be Ema or Gumshoe or some other returning character as a detective. It would surprise me if it was another new detective after Fulbright.

I was starting to like him too by the reveal. But that is what makes the reveal so surprising after all.

And don't talk bad about Ema. She'll Snackaroo you to kingdom come.
