Achieve Trophies | August 2012 Thread | Hakooma Matata

Yeah, that's kind of how I was seeing it on Xbox 360. Let Little Billy have his CoD's 1000/1000 (there's too many Little Billy's doing it to keep count anyway), but that's it. But I found a guy crossing the line with a very valuable completion, totally out of the ordinary, mixed in with that mainstream casual stuff, and it really made me wake up and realize Xbox 360 is not all that controlled like I thought, and said, "maybe PS3 isn't as bad as I thought in these terms".

But yeah, they are cheating those two games you mentioned on PS3. They aren't exactly niche. But they are also cheating totally niche stuff too. Sengoku BASARA? EDF: Insect Armageddon? Space Channel 5? These were previously niche, super valuable completions at that, which are now token hacks. The most outrageous thing about it is, these cheaters didn't even know these games existed before they saw them available to exploit.

And things like that, combined with the fact they are seemingly never getting punished or having their cheats taken away (if things continue as they are and Sony continues to play stupid or not even know what's going on), made me so frustrated I left the PS3 platform for awhile. I came back with knowledge Xbox 360 isn't as pure as I thought, and the only pure platform currently is PS Vita (if we ignore the MS:RC/StardroneExtreme/MGS3 transfarring exploiting).

In addition I hope Sony starts to punish, because even if I now see MS' punishments aren't that common, there's at least a danger that prevents myriads of cheaters. With Sony though there is no danger, and from here this issue will only escalate as it becomes more streamlined and known.

But ultimately like I said, the two consoles have their negatives in their own way, and the best thing to do is play for yourself and the challenge, ignoring what's going on with some undesirables; and if one is so frustrated that their rare PS3 completions aren't showing their skill because cheaters have them too, show you can pull off hard stuff on PS Vita (and/or consider multiplatforms on 360, taking into consideration the despicable profile manipulators despite uncommon MS Gamerscore Correction/resetting), while at the same time hoping that future platforms are not exploitable in this sense (PS Vita sure isn't, knock on wood) and these exploits all chalked off to being the first generation of consoles with trophies/achievements.

Tbh I don't care if people cheats or not, it's their problem. I get trophies because I want to do everything in a game, and at the same time it's a great log of my gaming exploits.

Achievements/trophies can hold very dear memories sometimes and I like to check them once in a while. Every time I see the Beat Zico trophy from Wipeout HD or the Tactical Challenger trophy from Vanquish I still remember my heart racing from when I obtained them. Cheater don't have that.

Note to self: Stop saying what your PLAN on playing, when you end up not doing so, and just play what you wanna play.
Oh just got Max Payne 3 used for around 15-20 bucks and Ratchet & Clank HD Collection for $40 ^_^v

Not only is Deadlight a fun little game but it's achievements seem easy too. I got 15/30 achievements and only got to play it for an hour or so this morning. The first level or so is basicly a tutorial level with you getting a achievement for completing each one. :)

6th on the PS3 list is not to shabby! Getting a Vita in July bumped me up. Augest will be all Vita also as I'm working on Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Hot Shots Golf and Dungeon Hunter.

How does getting on the list work? Do we count it out ourselves? Does Steve?

Tbh I don't care if people cheats or not, it's their problem. I get trophies because I want to do everything in a game, and at the same time it's a great log of my gaming exploits.

That's how I feel.

Space Channel 5? These were previously niche, super valuable completions at that, which are now token hacks

Blame me for that one.

I was stupid and uploaded my 100% perfect save to GameFAQs. I'm in the top 50 first achievers on several sites.
They used it for hacking on PS3.

Was notified some months later about that, pulled it, but the damage was already done.

Still SEGA should have coded it differently. It's pretty stupid to give out all trophies on a perfect save. At least most of those that hacked should be obvious to spot.

Now, as a disclaimer, this interest in the trophy/achievement scene I acknowledge is not very prevalent on NeoGAF. Even in the "Achieve Trophy" monthly threads, there is a very lax attitude with many users. But just take into consideration this is coming from a completionist, a completionist who also chases extremely challenging games, and thus rare completions. Seeing things torn apart really hits a nerve. If you have a lax attitude on it all, then don't patronize or downplay concerns of others with differing views.

Man, I totally hear you on this. I've been gaming for 20+ years, but it wasn't until the mid years of the original Playstation where I started to "Complete" games. Up until that point I played games but not with a completionist's mindset. 100%'ing games became somewhat of an addiction for myself, my brother, and a friend of ours. It was especially bad with RPGs back in the day. Personally, I never felt finished with a game until I collected everything there was to collect, saw and did everything there was to do, finished every difficulty, A/S Ranked everything, unlocked every unlockable, etc. We've gotten better over the years with this "problem" but it's still difficult for me to let go of or shelf a game until I complete it in its entirety. It's actually a terrible way to build a backlog! lol!

Anyway, I too hate the fact that there are legitimately difficult challenges/trophies/achievements out there that can and have been exploited. I honestly don't understand what these people are gaining by having a trophy/achievement archived on their profile without actually putting in the legitimate effort. I guess seeing these achievements pop up and having them archived on their profile fulfills some void in their life. Seriously, I don't want to get too judgmental or philosophical, but why else would someone HAVE to have a trophy no matter the cost? I'm no doctor, but it's gotta be some sort of mental issue or a complex of some nature. It would be like earning a college degree without attending any classes, taking zero tests, putting NO time into the degree, making zero sacrifices, etc. I know, we're talking video games here, but still. I think this kind of shit absolutely reflects on a person's core values and their behaviors.

But I reminisce to a time when Trophies meant something, back in 2008 when they came out...it was much more enjoyable than Achievements on 360. Then as the years went on, the cheating started...contained and only to select games, then in December 2011 it happened. The PS3 trophy system was worthless as we knew it.

I was an avid XBOX360 fan a few years back, got my Gamerscore to around 70K, and then just dropped it completely. My greatest memories from this time were the first couple years of the XBOX360. Getting 1K in the original Dead Rising, completing Extreme difficulty in Lost Planet, maxing out your classes and finding every treasure chest in Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, S-Ranking and completing the Bloody Palace in Devil May Cry 4, working towards 10,000 kills in Gears of War (until you realized the count was off and you didn't get the achievement until 15,000 kills or NEVER). The Golden 360 Era. I don't know exactly what happened, but a time came when I just lost interest in the whole scene. At some point in my 360 career I was buying cheap games I never would have played otherwise just for Achievements and I started to resent the fact that you couldn't delete Gamerscore from your profile. I looked at the games as tarnishes on my profile. It made me devalue the achievements I felt proud about. Playing on a 360 just felt so junky and trashy to me that I just ended up selling my entire system and games. I converted to PS3 years ago, but I've run into the same problem again by adding games to my profile that I wish I didn't. Now I realize that all these "Profile" consoles are just trashy and junky as a whole and I just gotta get over it and live with it. Oh well.

Anyway, back to another point I wanted to make. "Completing" games wasn't something I started doing with Achievements/Trophies. I did the kind of shit developers asked for these days all the time back in the day because I just loved playing games, talking about them, completing them to their fullest and seeing all that the game had to offer. I never needed a symbol or a points value to gauge my commitment or dedication to a single title. I had my save file to show that! Again, I don't want to generalize, but I know it's probably a high percentage, but most people today PLAY FOR PROFILE, NOT FOR COMPLETION. I posted about this once before in an old Trophies/Achievements debate thread here on GAF, but I'll say it again in case others feel the same way.

Most Achievements/Trophies these days don't even require you to fully COMPLETE the game. Bayonetta is a prime example of this. The Achievements/Trophies in that game comprise MAYBE 40% of what the game has to offer. There's no achievement for getting Pure Platinum on every stage, on every difficulty, with all characters. There's not even a trophy for beating the secret boss or completing angel slayer. Yet, people feel they have "Completed" the game when they get their Platinum or 1K. There's hundreds of hours of content beyond the trophy requirements that most people will never see and it's a shame. Now, I don't want to say that these people are "doing it wrong" nor do I want to tell people how to play their games, but I can't say that it doesn't tick me off to some degree.

This is what I like to call "Profile Completion", not "Game Completion". As I've mentioned earlier, I feel like most people are playing to profile completion, not save file (game) completion. I even think some people who used to complete games back in the day to their fullest are now resorting to just gaining the achievements/trophies and being done with it. Like I've said, it's not like you're a bad person by doing this, it's just a phenomenon I've noticed that ABSOLUTELY spawned during this generation. It really all began with the 360 and its Achievements system.

Now, you can play whatever mental gymnastics you want to play, but I've just been playing games how I've always played games. I still do like Achievements/Trophies because sometimes they do reflect the kinds of shit I used to do back in the day, but it's not what I'm playing for. If you're a true completionist, then play the games you enjoy to their fullest extent, beyond the 1K or Platinum Trophy. Forget sites like True Achievements or anything like that. Your save file, your progress from actually playing the game, and most importantly your memories of obtaining that 1K/Platinum or beyond are what truly matters. You don't need a website or an icon to show how passionate you are about gaming.

/end rant. Sorry if this post disrupted the purposes of this thread. I just had to respond to this issue.

Platinum #115
Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando

Finally it's over, what a f'n grind
If you played it like I did, will take you 5 days total of 6+ hours everyday
If playing casually, more than a week and a ha;f

This collection is no joke

Sly was the easiest so far, in the middle it's Ratchet (bolt grinding gets tiring fast), last is Jak (those Orbs!, thank fuck for work-around)

34 Bronze trophies away from 5,000 Bronze Trophy Milestone

Where would you rank the God of War collections? I have both still sealed on my shelf.

Above Ratchet, Below Jak

God of War is pretty easy, just collectibles can fuck you over
Need guide just in case scenario

Also most trophies come with the story, problem that most find challenging is the god damn challenges, need skill + a "lil' bit o' luck"
Perseverance + Patience is required
(Funny how challenges produce a challenge... crazy notion I know)

Thanks! I have a bud who swears on one of the Challenges everytime GOW comes up. lol

If you have the patience to do the Challenge of the Gods in the first game, there is no trophy in any of the God of War games released (so far) that will pose any trouble.

I'm guilty of this to an extent, but I'd like to think that I, the player, can define what I feel is "completion". Granted, I don't go for trophies in games that I don't enjoy (for the most part) nor do I buy games for the sole purpose of trophy hunting, but there are times when that extra percentage to go for game completion feels excessive. As an example, games like Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2/3 and Musou Orochi 3 requires a metric ton of time dedication to get all the trophies for them, yet by proper game completion terms, you'd have to go far and beyond the 150+ hours that getting the plat on those games entail. By the time I got the plat for all three of those games, I'd already felt like I'd experience everything the game had to offer, and doing more would just be stuff like pointlessly grinding up characters that I didn't like to max level, getting top tier weaponry for everyone, etc. It's actually part of the reason why the 100% for Sengoku BASARA is so incredibly annoying and time consuming, since it requires you to literally do everything, get everything and raise EVERYONE to max level in the game.

I do agree with your Bayonetta example though. While I don't really like games that tie ludicrously hard challenges to individual trophies (the Mission mode trophies in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2/Ninja Gaiden 3 come to mind), not having a single trophy to make people at least TRY to fight
Father Rodin
is pretty silly, since it's through trophies that I've even discovered secrets in games that I had no idea about.

I've been cleaning up my XBLA achievements this last week or so and having a great time, so many great games.

I'm currently going after the big one in Lara Croft: Guardian of Light with the Kane and Lynch DLC. It's such an amazing game and the Kane and Lynch pack adds a strange level of humor on top of everything (given the excessive swearing being bleeped out).

If anybody wants to hop online and take care of some multi-player achievements in any of these, let me know:

Carcassonne
TMNT 1989
A Kingdom for Keflings
Splosion Man
N+

This is going to be a lull month for me. Most probably just doing the VR Missions in MGS2 to be a certain for me.

I'm thinking of just finishing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood on normal instead of hard, the mechanics of this game is just terrible. Oh and also DNF. Ugh.

So, I decided I wanted to play my PS3 a bit more (have mainly played on 360 bar a few PS3 exclusives as far as HD twins go) and actually get a Platinum....... why not try and also complete the other of my fav new series this gen? I got like 70ish% or something originally, knuckled downed and finished it off just recently.

Congrats, that's definitely a gnarly plat for your first. Most people don't have the emotional fortitude to beat the game, let alone grind crystal lizards and redshadowed skeletons for the parts needed to get the weapon trophies. I actually had a guy join me in a game and drop the cloudstone and the sharpstone ones so I got the trophy without the retarded grind haha.

Thanks! :D

Ugh that took aaaaaaages for me to get a pure bladestone, I felt like I was playing FFXI again with all the farming lol.

I thought I had stuffed up getting the Friend Ring too and didn't have enough good character tendency, I was killing the black phantoms with poison cloud to start with without realising that didn't count!! ;( Thought I was gonna have to go through the game again but luckily the last 3 BP's left were enough - getting that ring was my yeeeeeeeeeeees phew moment lol.

The moon crystal ones from the lizards I got lucky with, I wasn't particularly good at catching them before they ran off lol but thankfully the few I caught did drop them.

So it was sometimes stressful but worth it! I really love the series, got Dark Souls 100% achievements on 360 so it just felt right to play it again and give its younger brother the same treatment. :D

July was pretty slow for me, Skyrim took so damn long, and I was a bit burnt out after that. As always, I want to get the Dead Space: Extraction platinum to complete my Dead Space collection, but it seems pretty hard. Other than that, Arkham city and Uncharted 1/2/3 are games I'm considering platting, and I also want to 100% RE4.

Find the upgrades for the flamethrower. Secondary fire is god like.

was only 70 trophy points away from getting 1000 on both consoles. Should've played Uncharted 3 over Rainbow Moon. Would of had more fun as well.

Hmmm 2nd month with no update, me so sad. Went to yourgamercard and checked my psn id, it did update with my newest trophies, up to 14 plats now, 2378 total trophies. Oh well not sure why it isn't working on the other side of things.

So I beat LOTR War in The North yesterday and I was surprised I obtained 75% of the trophies without even realizing it.

Can I get my gamer card updated? It was screwed up when I joined a few months ago and wasn't updated for this month either. I'm now a whole trophy level higher haha. Anyway, this is my up to date one:

Steve does up the list based on our totals from the start to the end of the month. Not sure what site he uses to get all the info from though.

Cool thanks. I would've been 6th on the 360 list but probably since I'm new and there's a lot to keep track of, it can be missed.

He counts at the start of the month, so if you weren't in the list of gamer-cards last month, he didn't have your 7/1 score and couldn't calculate the difference with your 8/1 score.

They claim it doesn't affect Trophies.

Sadly not true. You can hack saves easily with a hex editor. For example in a recent tiltle (FFXIII-2), you can change the hex values to get infinite life (9999), gil and infinite items, to name a few things. You can just use a simple software program

Willowtree editor for Borderlands is another good example

This will get worse and worse sadly.

He counts at the start of the month, so if you weren't in the list of gamer-cards last month, he didn't have your 7/1 score and couldn't calculate the difference with your 8/1 score.

Sorry it seems I missed you (nocturnedelight) last month. You are in the race though for this month.

My apologies.

They claim it doesn't affect Trophies.

Only a matter of time

If trophy Pings @1,000,000 bolts say for Ratchet & Clank, get close to 990,000 bolts, then just get 10k bolts enjoy trophy

Don't have to exactly get the same condition to pop trophy
God mode alone defeats skill required, you'll still get trophies, just at a faster rate

Castlevania Lords of Shadow "God Mode" is a joke
I played that game on Hard difficulty as my 1st play-through, learned the ins and outs of the mechanics of that game
Hardest difficulty was a fucking joke, from learning patterns, honing skills
Now 1 hex edit, Viola you got Platinum for LOS... Fuck That

I swear if the fuck over WarHawk platinum down the line somehow, there will be problems

Also funny in July thread of how I posted on those new people joining the trophy leader-boards getting platinum in mere hours which usually take hundreds
This might be the culprit if you think about it

Just went to their website:

G60pV.png

How does this not affect trophies?

Seriously what's the point of having fun doing trophies, when you remove the fun aspect
Now I feel depressed, time to grab a Xanax

Amazing how the VITA is the savior out of all of this... until it gets a game genie of its own

Then me and jeff go on a druken stupor ranting on GAF

That totally sucks. Trophies aren't that far off then. Modify saves to make any encounter a joke. Character progression, progress any single player campaign is easy. Input God Mode. Totally broken.
They claim it doesn't affect Trophies. Such BS.
Saw someone on the Simpsons leaderboards get 16k points in 30 seconds. It's impossible to do it that fast. They didn't even try to make it believable. LOL. At least use some common sense.

I guess i'm in the minority where I dont really care if people decide to hack their trophies. If thats what makes them happy, then more power to them. I trophy hunt for the satisfaction of personally achieving a goal. Some trophies that I've earned, I sit back and think, wow, I can't believe I just did that.

For trophy hackers, its the satisfaction to climb some leaderboard, but really, what do they get out of it? I know I certainly dont look at the leaderboards and think, that person is awesome, he's got so many trophies. I dont even compare my trophies to other people. None of my real life friends are trophy/achievement hunters. Its all a personal goal thing and a record of your achievements over all of the games you've played.

I've played some pretty awful games to get trophies and I think those days are behind me but I still love to go for platinums and I love teaming up with random people to get trophies. The trophy community is generally pretty awesome. Trophy hackers aren't part of that community.

yeah, I have no idea what the point of hacking your trophies is... Seriously, they are for each gamer to achieve, and enjoy, soI'm not sure what kind of E-Peen glory these guys are hoping to acheive by hacking their way through them....

I try to get them for fun, but will be skipping trying for plats on most until I can catch up on teh 20+ game sin my backlog. Hopefully, I can pick up a bunch of Bronze, silver and golds along the way to keep my score up...

How does one go about participating each month? Looking to start getting into this, I have loads of trophies I still need to get and this feels like great motivation.

So my tentative plan this month is to platinum:
Darksiders
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII-2

Haven't started the first one at all but I've finished the other two to story completion. Looking forward to getting back into both FFs.

I'll put this in post#2 now.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  • Generate a Gamercard @ yourgamercards.net (PS3) and/or xboxgamertag.com (X360)
  • Post the card in the thread. Say something like "Add me bro!"
  • From next month on, you'll be added to the leaderboard
  • Scores are tallied from post#2 in this thread on the last day of the month @ 8 pm GMT+1 (I'm Dutch)
  • Top 5 Xbox and PS3 collectors for the month get on the OCD card.

Add me breh! Can't wait to get started!

Platinum #59: Final Fantasy XIII-2

Finally got off my lazy butt and finished off the Bestiary. The secret ending was kinda redundant. Not much else to say about this.

I'm reasonably to close to finishing off Lollipop Chainsaw, so I'll do that next~

Haven't got a Platinum trophy yet, but hopefully aiming for one this month!

Games I'll be working on this month:

Shadow of the Colossus HD
InFamous 2
Sly 1/2/3 HD
Heavy Rain (Only 2 more trophies)

Just 100%ed The Simpsons. Much thanks to GAFer zerokoolpsx.

So does anyone have Payday: The Heist. As I was playing Simpsons someone told me it's "incredibly easy". I got it on sale (I think it went from $20 to $10 recently) and want to check it out. Anyone care/want to help me?

InFamous 2 is a fun plat. That game is just fun in general. I should really go back and try out Festival of Blood. I've heard Sly 1 is pretty easy, too.

Yeah I've got most of the trophies for InFamous 2 done already, just got to finish up the Evil side, do some UGC missions and then go back and playthrough on Hard mode (;_;).

Sly 1 I'm at the Ruby boss battle (alligator), I always mess up on the final part of it so hopefully I'll get it eventually.

Still taking a trophy break majority of my gaming has been on 360 and Wii. I think the massiveness of my PS3 backlog is making me hesitant along with time to play. Taking it easy slowly working on Peggle XBLA. I beat main mode and nights, gonna start the nights challenges then start working on clean up. Having fun but sometimes the game feels all like luck I don't have complete control so it may get frustrating but all in all seems simple. I really would love to clean up a lot if not all my XBLA games. Going for full completion feels satisfying.
