Acne-age: What do you guys use?

One thing the acne.org regimen recommends and that worked for me was that instead of 'spot treating' with BP, you should use it all over your face as a preventative measure, not just a treatment for existing spots.

What I do is I mix a little pea-sized amount with my moisturiser, and apply that. Quicker than applying each seperately too, and gives total coverage.

The best natural anti-acne action is the following:

-Drink plenty of water/juice

-Eat at least some fruit/vegetables

-Avoid constantly drinking soda or eating candy (every now and then doesn't mater, but if drinking Coke every day is part of your life, you might want to cut it out)

-Keep hands away from face (i pick spots if they come to a head, but i mean in general. just keep your finger away from your face)

-Wash your face with water twice per day (morning and evening)

-Do some exercise every day. Whether it be walking a few Kms or going to the gym, just be active.

-Get some sunlight every day even if it's only 30 mins.

On top of this you can use some cream or something, but don't use multiple treatments. The best thing to do is just try and change your diet and do some exercise and it will clear naturally over time.

Proactiv.
But I just use like Cetaphil to wash my face and lessen the oily skin and use the oil free moisturizer from proactiv. I don't like the face cleaner. too harsh for the skin. the toner is awesome too to wipe away excess dead skin or something.

and then i started drinking more water, veggies and eat me some protein for other reasons but it helps ;D.

I'm inthe same situation as you Ashlong. I've had really bad acne since I was 16. Now Im gonna be 19 in a month and it's the worst it's ever been. Really fucking sucks at this age :/. I've tried pretty much every single over the counter product and nothing worked. Tried Proactiv and it didn't work either. Now I wash my face with Dove bar soap and have Oxy pads, but of course that shit doesn't work. So now I just go a few days without washing my face and it'll clear up a little bit, get worse, then clear up a tiny bit again. I touch my face a lot and pop them whenever I see a white head. I'm going to ask my doctor for a referall to a dermatologist soon, and hopefully they give me something that works.

My acne rarely hurts, it's just there disfiguring my face haha.

yup, pretty much exactly the same. i also notice that the redness goes away when i stop using proactiv, which is why i continue to stop and then it gets bad again :lol

im sort of liking murad right now...at least its doing something. thanks for all the advice ppl

i never spot treated with the proactiv BP products, which probably helped. for some reason i get very little to no pimples on the top half of my face. but the Murad treatment doesnt use BP...so we'll see

I gave up on diet. It's definately attributing to my hormonal acne. I stopped eating all the stuff I enjoyed (not unhealthy btw) and I still got acne. Not to mention I lost A LOT of weight. My clothes didn't even fit me anymore, so I said eff it. I don't drink soda, I eat fruits and veggies everyday, I exercise 5 times a week. I only eat out twice a week.

There are a few foods I'm guessing that causes me to get a few pimples a week:

-Oatmeal

-Milk: I drink two cups a day; one for my shake and the other for my organic cereal at nights

-Pasta may be causing it too.

I tried all kinds of organic soaps. Everything from peppermint oil to tea trea soap. They were all too drying, so I said eff it and went back to the old soap I used: dial soap. Just the plain ole antibacterial soap, and it's less drying and actually helps a bit drying pimples.

It just pisses me off when I see someone who's covered with literally close to a hundred pimples on their face, they use a product, like say Nucelle mandelic acid, and then their face is clear. I tried that stuff for the few that I get, and it really didn't work. :lol

one thing i always wondered what was the right thing to do:

should i wash my face in the middle of the day? i use a 3 step treatment, so i always thought that washing it would wipe all of that off and not be beneficial. if i feel really oily though i do rinse with water.

if i do rinse with water midday, should i reapply all 3 steps?

why not in the shower? i usually do my face wash in the shower, is there anything wrong with that?
I always wash my face in the shower.. I'd imagine 90% of people do this as a part of their morning regimen. Probably just his preference?

oh ok. i asked because i read somewhere not to do it in the shower. didnt list a reason though. i should probably stop putting my face direction under the water though, maybe that aggravates my skin?

I gave up soda and have been drinking a lot of water and my [embarrassing] bacne has been clearing up a bit. Still going to see a dermatologist soon, though, because I want to avoid scarring and I have really oily skin...

Missed the worst offender; don't stay up late.

I have a similar situation.

I've had acne since I was 11 or 12, and it's been pretty persistent. My sister still has it too, and she just turned 22, so I don't think I can really wait for it to go away anymore. It's already killing my confidence, and I'll never get laid until it goes away. It's just light-moderate acne around my entire face (and some on my back), so it's not as bad as some kids I've seen, but I think it's time for it to end. And for those who just say "oh, don't eat bad things, wash your face" are damn lucky. It's not just about hygiene; if it was I'd be much better off than most.

For the record, I:

-Rarely have candy anymore (my vice is gum)
-Don't drink soda
-Don't drink milk unless it's for cereal, and that's only a few times a week
-Washed my face day and night for years, using cetaphil
-Tried Proactiv, did all the steps on a schedule for at least a year
-Tried Benzaclin, worked for awhile but I think I got immune to it
-Tried Retin-A, didn't do shit
-Tried oral antibiotics, didn't see much of a change.
-Exercise has helped, but not that much

I think it's been long enough now; I'm going to see if I can get an appointment with a Dermatologist soon. And get Accutane.

real talk: you just need time to grow out of acne

This ended up being the only way to get rid of mine. Several years of seeing a dermatologist and nothing worked, ended up just going away once I hit my early 20's.

Someone mentioned cider vinegar earlier in the thread which was also suggested a couple weeks ago in another thread for oily skin. I never heard of using it before so I tried it, and it helps a lot with my oily skin. Haven't had any zits since using it either, but I rarely get them anyways so it's difficult to say if ACV helps combat acne. Doesn't hurt to try it, though.

acne..... that's a reaction to anal penetration isn't it?
jus stop doing that and you'll be fine.

seriously though... i think you will grow out of it. no real cure.

That was me suggesting ACV. Glad it's working for you.

acne.org's stuff is cheap and extremely high quality. I used to get prescription grade benzoyl peroxide (Benzaclin), and their bp is very similar. Their cleanser has got to be the best face wash I've used, absolutely no irritation or smell.

It's like over the counter cosmetic companies have all agreed to make their products gimmicky and ineffective. I don't understand how else there can be 50 different products for something that should be as consistent as salt or sugar.

And eat carrots. Great for skin.

Hm, I wonder if you all using ACV just have bad diets. Vinegar is a strong acid, meaning it's a strong base producer in the body.

A bad modern diet is typically heavy in grains and meat, both of which are strong acid producers.

Your body is probably struggling to keep pH optimized, and is giving skin a lower priority. Inbalanced skin pH causes skin irritation, which increases sebum (oil) production, which acne vulgaris bacteria loves.

It doesn't mean that grains and meat are bad for you. That's for delusional vegans to believe. Just eat your meat AND potatoes. Meat and fruit/veggies balance each other and make things a lot healthier for the body.

Here is a table of what foods are base/acid producers:
http://www.thepaleodiet.com/nutritional_tools/acid.shtml

I'm not or suggesting to ingest ACV. It's topical, diluted in water.

Also, my diet doesn't consist of heavy grains and meat. In fact, I probably eat any form meats 3 days a week. The rest is chicken or neither of the two. I'm probably one of the more healthier Gaffers on this board. Hell, I don't buy regular bread from the grocery store. I go to the Fresh Market and buy their hand made breads. :lol

Hand made bread is still a strong acid producer. Quality and freshness is not a factor.

Do you eat fruits and vegetables? Pretty much any other food is an acid producer.

I've already mentioned that I eat fruits and vegetables. I eat an apple every day, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cantelope, melon, bananas, kiwis, papaya, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, salads at twice a week, squash, spinach, and whole lot of other fruits and veggies a week.

I took accutane when i was like 20. Worked like a charm. I had horrible horrible cystic acne. It was so bad i'm pretty sure it had a permanent negative effect on my self esteem even though my skin is now fine at 27.

really? cause...i stay up very late. but i wake up late too. is it the time that matters or the hours of sleep
Waking up late doesn't solve it. I don't know why it is, but staying up late always equals lost of zits, at least for me. And all nighters will give birth to at least one megazit.
Maybe it has something to do with lack of natural light, or different metabolism during the night, who knows. Try going to sleep soon and waking up early... does wonders for me.

its not so much 'staying up late' as much as getting rest and reducing stress.

and i cant stress this enough: take some vitamin A. that's what accutane is, a high concentrated form of it. vitamin A capsules are pretty much accutane lite

wanted to give a small update.

stopped using Murad over a month ago after it completely fucked up my face. assholes. went to see my dermatologist and she immediately said i had severe acne and prescribed me Accutane. so far its been really great. not sure if its because i stopped using Murad or the Accutane specifically, but my face feels smooth, although it looks like i have acne due to scars and some inflamation.

went in for my first monthly checkup today with some blood work done and they stopped my medication =( apparently my liver enzyme count was over 800 instead of the normal 35 or something, which is a common sign for Hepatitis. they are running more tests and i'll find out more tomorrow. i hope this is just a small side effect from the one night of drinking i had last week.

whats worse is that i was sick with flu like symptoms for a week after that night and had been taking some nyquil and tylenol to help with that, thinking its ok. should not have done that...dont want to be taking a 2 week break off this stuff, its magic

That sounds terrible. Your liver... what have you done.

hopefully nothing that wont fix itself...i had no idea one night would be so wrong. they said scale back...not have no alcohol whatsoever

the doctor (not the derm, she referred me to another after my results) was also unsure because i dont feel sick anymore. so she was pretty confused as to why my enzyme count was so high when my liver wasnt enlarged or anything.

accutane, but it may be illegal now. good luck.

and it'll dry you out, 4 LYFE yo. so buy some shares in Chapstik.

edit: oops. just read that the thread was old. sorry!
anyways, yeah, accutane is brutal. I almost got taken off of it myself but they screwed up and we didn't do blood testing til like 2 weeks before I was done. I pushed thru but the doc was scared as hell that I was gonna get a yacht from his insurance money. Now my skin is damn good (so glad I took it) and even though I get wicked chapped lips, oh well.

age

I used to have it pretty bad, but then it just kind of went away after I got older.

I also used just about everything under the sun outside of acutane. I did have a couple friends who did use acutane and they bother had wonderful results.

It's weird, I used to used to wash my face like crazy back in the day and have pretty bad zits, but now, I just use water and I am free and clear.

I used to have mild/moderate acne. I followed a variant of the regimen on acne.org.

Followed it religiously. I started to see a significant difference after about 6 months. Takes a lot of patience and time, but it worked for me. I'm now 'clear' asides from the odd blemish or small spot..but I still follow the regimen cos I fear if I stop the spots will return :|

Dunno if it would work as well for severe acne, but it worked as advertised for me.

Products I use are: J&J Tip-to-toe baby wash (in lieu of Purpose liquid soap - it's virtually the same formula, from the same company, just different packaging..and much cheaper!); neutrogena on-the-spot cream (or, more recently, quinoderm 5%..i can find this more easily locally, had to import the neutrogena from the US before); and either cetaphil moisturiser or aveeno (the latter seems to work just as well for me and it's cheaper).
I just got my package from ance.org a few days ago.

Can't wait to try it out after reading your impressions. :D

Not sure what it was but I went to the dermatologist and he prescribed these pills I had to take for a while. I only get one or 2 zits now at most.
Probably that accutane or whatever. My lips are dry a lot too...

you dont know what it was? that must have been a long time ago. when i was prescribed it, i had to sign all these forms, pledge my honesty, sign over my soul, and get branded with ACCUTANE on my back before i could get it. apparently its the new standard

how do people that completed accutane treatment control it now? do you just wash your face with regular facial soap and thats it?
