Just wondering: if you live in a magical place where torrenting could be legal, would talking about it still be bannable here on GAF?

Maybe something like this would help?

Code:
<div style="overflow:hidden; clear:both">
[ad js and stuff]
</div>

Stats! Oh, how useful you are, my lovelies!

I see these garbage Ads.

I see every single one of these rotating garbage ads.

I SEE BEYOND THEM.

OPEN YOUR MIND.

Seems to work fine on Netscape and K-Meleon.

Will a person get banned for using GAF on a CLI browser (lynx, w3c, etc), since it's all text and no ads?

Having said that I'm really not sure why anyone would bother getting rid of the ads, especially since they are barely noticeable.
I get the feeling that most people who use adblocker don't really care or realize to add a site to their whitelist. When I was a lurker/first joined, I had adblock set up (mainly for YT iirc) but I didn't realize there was such a thing as a whitelist (wasn't too savvy I guess). When I did though, I added a bunch of 'indie' sites I frequent often and enjoy onto that list, GAF being one of them obviously.

I've seen this ad placement issue, and it's pretty random. I don't have any adblocker installed anywhere.

For diagnostic purposes:

OSX 10.7 Lion
Safari 5.1
Happens only on the index page and the forumdisplay pages (never on anything else)

Haven't seen this myself in Windows, or using Firefox/Chrome.

Isn't using adblocker unethical regardless of whether the site is 'indie' or not? In fact, isn't the anti-adblock argument just an extension of the anti-piracy one?

From the TOS:
Linking to pirate download sites, directions on how to get pirated software to work, reviews or impressions of pirated software will all result in the banning of the user in question.
This seem to imply that impressions of newly released US shows (for example) coming from non-US gaf (except maybe for Canada) should be bannable.
Though it's not very clear what constitues pirated material.

I don't think so, it's probably been discussed before but many people use adblockers for some incredibly annoying sites. I don't see the piracy argument to be synonymous with using adblock on certain sites, tbh.

You can consider it unethical, but I don't think it's against the 'rules' on GAF to admit that you use adblocker for some other specific website or not. Correct me if i'm wrong.
90% of GAF prob. uses it elsewhere.

You sir got some BALLS.

How do ad-block extensions work?

Do they load the ad in the background so the site gets credit for a view and then just not show the image to the end user?

Certainly it's unlikely that all the people posting in the manga threads, as an example, are getting Japanese magazines within days of release and reading them in the native language. The moderators seem to have a policy that they will assume a person has legally obtained the material unless the person says otherwise.
