And this proves what? Kid is 14 and has been in what 2-3 movies? The amount of hate he gets for the movies he has been in is just odd to me. Its not the first case of nepotism in the industry, yet for some reason Will and his kids get the ire of the internet nerds. Will himself hasn't been in many movies himself over the past 4-5 years yet any time his name is attached to something its a chorus "so sick of Will Smith....Earf..." etc etc.
Every kid celebrity who acts like he's hot shit gets the brunt of nerdrage. Compare that Harry Potter kid with Justin Bieber. It's common occurrence.

Sucks that the movie sucks. Wish it was good as I really liked M Night's early movies, enjoy Will Smith, and wish nothing but the best to Whitta. Oh well.
The hate is kinda insane, and you're right, there's a huge amount of nepotism in Hollywood, but I think what brings it out in people is the lack of subtlety. I mean, maybe have him co-star once (like Pursuit of Happiness), then get him in a good TV series and go from there. But contriving a plot which uses Will's name but maximises his son's screen time, getting a novice screenwriter to fill in the blanks, and a director-for-hire who'll do what he's told? At that point you're really pushing it.

Why does will smith jr has only one facial expression ?

EDIT :

Ok I'm not alone :

calm the fuck down bro, I was just pointing out that he's got the same expression on his damn face 24/7. talk about reading too much into it.

Shamalyan is a good, competent director. It's his writing that is fucking terrible.

Then again, I'm not sold on his ability to handle bigger Hollywood vehicles, judging by how terrible The Last Airbender was. Like, how do you fuck up such a great story so badly?

He was a competent director. The Happening was more than poorly directed, it was incompetently done. Shyamalan had seemingly ceased understanding or caring about the most basic of fundamentals. It was kind of astonishing how terribly he would stage simple conversations.

I'll never calm down!

Actually didn't mean just you, but that in general...

All of this information is only coming out now. The constant hate towards Will Smith and his son is from before. The minute any project is even attached to Will Smith, the same comments are made. And if his son has a project? Well then double it!

Will Smith is too good for this, and maybe his son should disappear until he's learned the art a little better and is over the age of 18.

What? People love Will Smith, they just don't like his kid.

I think Whitta deserves to write for Paul Thomas Anderson, Terrence Malick, or something after this mess. Give the man a break.

Where's Gary? I would love to here is opinion of how the movie turned out, and how far away it got from his original vision for it.

I'm going to see it. I wasn't that big of a fan of Book of Eli, but Walking Dead was pretty darn good and this looks good to me.

I'm pretty pumped for it, to be honest.

He only wrote episode 4 and consulted on the rest.

I don't think he was the main factor for why the series was good.

He probably won't do that until well after the film's release. NDAs and what not.

He said he's proud of the movie and that he doesn't want to talk about it here anymore.

Ah. That's fair, just figured he'd have more to say given how opinionated he is, but given the reviews and general public opinion of the movie so far, I can understand why he'd want to stay away from message boards for awhile.

Havn't seen it yet but kind of not surprised people aren't liking it. It looked like Will was "phoning it in" and Jaden making that face every 5 seconds. Yall know what I mean.

The Wall Street Journal headline: "Is After Earth The Worst Movie Ever Made?"

Jesus Christ man, what is going on here.

Can someone link to this "it's Will Smith's idea" thing? First I've heard of this was the previous page.

Gary tweeted this interview today: http://collider.com/gary-whitta-after-earth-akira-interview/

Collider: I noticed in the credits last night that Will Smith came up with the idea for the film. How did all this germinate?

Gary Whitta: Yes, totally legit. I think this is actually the first movie that Will has a story credit on. I wasn’t on any of his other movies, but to me, it feels like [there’s more] of his DNA in this that any movie he’s ever made. It was his original idea, he had a little one-page premise; not a lot of meat on the bones, but it was his original idea, and they wanted a writer to help him develop it. So they sent me the little logline and I went away and built the world out a little bit and pitched it to him. We developed it together, and then I went away and wrote the script. So the way the writing credits broke down, I think, is actually totally representative—story by Will Smith, and [director M. Night Shyamalan] and I wrote the screenplay together.

Seriously. Just what the hell happen to M. Night? For a bit, at his weakest with The Village and maybe Lady in the Water, his directing was at least competent, but than The Happening and The Last Air Bender happened, good god...

Big Willie's son didn't have me worried it was Shyamalan that threw the red flag.

George Lucas Effect. He had competent people around him.

It's different. It's like he forgot how to shoot and direct. The Happening and The Last Airbender are beyond usual Hollywood garbage, they're incompetently and amateurishly made. It's inexplicable. Maybe he suffers from dementia or early on-set Alzheimer's and we're being a bunch of assholes.

Rough reviews and likely a just a rough weekend at the box office. That sucks for all involved, but that's the bed you made. You've got to lie in it now.

Edit:

All the sites that I normally go to for Box Office talk say anywhere from 30 to 50 mil. A so-so start for the weekend, before what will be big drops in subsequent weeks if moviegoers reject it.

I am not surprised that this movie is actually terrible. I have no idea how MNS keeps getting funds to make more movies. He has been terrible for years. Also, Will Smith needs to stop trying to make his kids into stars. Let them decide what they want to do.

I don't think you could really expect much else from the premise of the movie. I mean it's like a bunch of elastics and you have only a few you can pull, which ones could really be pulled much at all considering the premise and featured actors? I haven't seen it, but I would think the problem starts at the very source: what is the movie about, and what market is it for? "Desolate" sci-fi, Will Smith and his son. That says it all IMO. It's a combination that couldn't really work. Seems to be on the same level as I Am Legend, except that one at least had zombies in NYC, and a dog.

At this point, I think of Shyamalan as a morbid curiosity. Like David Lynch, but instead of conveying dread and mystery, it's just shit.

I don't think so. Get a great writer and director and you could make any premise work. And I don't think the premise is bad at its core. A kid has to survive on a hostile planet to save himself and his wounded father. But then you have characters named Cypher Raige and you know something went wrong with the writing after that initial premise.

And I Am Legend could have been really great if they stuck close to the book.
