After PSX, I suddenly stopped caring about gaming.

I'm in love with gaming atm. There's so many games in looking forward to, plus the games in currently playing give me all kinds of feels. FF7 is my most anticipated anything in life.

This is probably the biggest gaining "high" I've had since the ps1.

Between Bloodborne dlc, halo MP, Legacy of the void campaign plus MP, Driveclub, life is strange and axiom verge, I go home everyday just trying to plan out what to play. I go home excited everyday to play something.

And I can easily add more stuff like DQ and shovel knight but time is the crucial factor.

Gaming is my favorite thing in life currently, sports has taken a back seat.

My advice is to stop visiting gaf for a week and see how much your desire to play goes up.

I derive far more enjoyment from browsing Gaf than I've ever had from gaming.

If it was the gaming industry or gaf, I'd rather have gaf.

Edit: Wait, if there's no gaming industry, then there's no Gaf. Hrmm..

I think a lot of us old folks go through this, the main piece of advice I'll give is stop buying games. I had this nasty habit of buying RPGs and other "big" releases for years after my life didn't have enough time for them any more. I recently Goodwilled around 200 PS2 and PS3 games, it felt good. I still play games but I probably only buy 5 or 6 a year instead of 20+.

Life is short, do stuff you enjoy. This OMGHYPEMUSTGET cycle is manufactured by game publishers and it's pretty easy to not participate. That said the emphasis on required (or nearly so) online features is pretty adult-unfriendly.

Different things appeal at different stages in life. It's usually helpful to be selective of the amount of games purchased or willing to buy per year rather than get everything. I find that it's easier to quickly burn out when overwhelmed with unfiltered titles. I remember a time I didn't want to play anymore too, it turned out its because I was playing mostly shooter type games, so I branched out and tried Catherine, gravity rush, wipe out and a host of other things I wouldn't have and I really enjoyed myself. I made note to not over buy shooter type games anymore and instead spread out the genre a bit and also don't force yourself to play when you don't need it, it's supposed to be fun not feel like a child chore

I guess that happens but doesnt last longer than a week or so for me, right now theres so much to be looking forward to i just cant leave.

I'm currently in my first semester of college, and after the semester started, I didn't even touch a game for about 2 months, despite having Persona 4: Dancing All Night come in the mail in the meantime. I'm back in now and committing serious time to it. Sometimes, you just need to take a break.

We can always count on college to take away our time for gaming :( Still, i guess thanks to that my love for this hasn't dwindled.

I waited like 4+ months to continue the witcher 3

I'm not going to hate on anyone for going exclusively with a console. If that's what makes them feel better, then all power to them. With that said, let me respond.

I honestly haven't had to do that once this decade.

AMDs Crimson driver falderal just happened.

You *easily* make this up on the back end if you buy a lot of games. Easily.

This isn't a slam dunk if you take the secondhand market into account.

This whole concept is just ridiculous to me. I won't try to understand it.

For someone like me who has RSI problems, a controller is way more comfortable. Controllers were designed first and foremost to play games, Mouse and Keyboard was designed first and foremost to work Exel and Word. They have been adapted incredibly well and there is no arguing that you are faster and more accurate on a mouse and keyboard, but they aren't ideal in every instance.

Those games are the same as "console exclusives" in my mind.

Agree here.

If you have an aversion to digital games and services like Steam and GOG, then obviously PC gaming is not for you. With that said, you'll often find digital versions cheaper (and cheaper sooner) than its used console counterpart.

Fair enough. However, games being available for cheaper may curb one's desire to sell off their games in the first place.

Agree here as well.

The only game I saw at PSX that was new and I am hyped for is Nioh. Everything else was kind of Meh. I am also very excited for the Dying Light Expansion and of Course Uncharted 4.

doesnt sound like you stopped caring about gaming at all. just the type of games you are interested in.

call of duty and battlefront is still gaming. smh

I don't play newer games generally. They demand far too much of your attention and time. I prefer older style of games that are more pick up and play and aren't these long guided narrative experiences.

I'm glad the new style of games exists though, but yeah I mostly play old games now, when I have time.

I took a break (well my PS4 broke...)

So I went back to my ps3. Then that broke (fucking kids I swear I never had a console really break...)

Then I busted out my Dreamcast, some PS1/PS2, hooked up the gamecube, played some PSP and 3DS.

I am super pumped that "santa" is bringing another PS4 to the house this xmas. Got Battlefront, transformers and the rest of Destiny to play over holiday break.

IDK, going back and playing some of my past favorites really kind of put in perspective how fucking amazing modern gaming is. Re-experincing the progression (or regression cause I kind of went backwards) of tech and game design was interesting. Experiencing the games I played as a teen with my own kids was really fun.

I was a bit worried they would be all "OMG look at these shit graphics WTF is even going on! JAGGIES!" but then I kind of realized all this is bullshit and to see a small child wonder at an interactive world (however primitive) is really special. I mean I could barely force myself to play the PS3 version of destiny but my kid didn't give a fuck.

So. Rent or steal a child and play some of your older favorites with them. :P

I think I am no longer really interested in time sinks any more. A 100 hour game is not a positive for me any longer. Give me a nice 15 hour game with excellent design.

I probably play games less than 10 hours a week now. I think it more fun at times to discuss them than play them...

Op sounds like your time is getting more valuable and you are tired of the bullshit. You want an experience that you can get in and out of quickly and make progress in without a lot of hassle.

There are a lot of games out there that do not value your time and provide filler filled experiences. Avoid those games.

This is why I have multiple hobbies, eventually you get burned out on one and put more focus into another but it eventually works out where you enjoy everything equally because you strike a nice balance.

I think being an RPG fan keeps me from being completely bored of gaming, I always like to lose myself in the world the dev(s) created, I take like a month break then I'm back at it

I think most of what you said makes sense, and it's pretty obvious the kinds of stuff they showed at PSX isn't for you anymore. That's a perfectly legit way to feel and I think if you decide gaming is no longer for you, or certain types of gaming are no longer for you, you shouldn't feel any obligation to pretend otherwise. And hey, if you change your mind a few months or a few years from now, that's cool too.

I would point out one thing, though:

I felt like I had been reduced to the level of a child being told that PlayStation is going to receive specific console first, and that 'you'll be receiving content 30 days before the other guys'. I just cannot see what the big deal is about some of these games, and why people dedicate so much to them.

Games like Call of Duty are (surprisingly) becoming more appealing to me now. They are quick, I can play a match before class starts to get that gaming itch scratched, and put it down without having that "one more mission" feeling. Star Wars Battlefront, despite having no offline mode, was one of my favorite games that I tried out in hand with Driveclub Bikes, which seriously reminds me of PGR 4, and a few others..

Most of the "console exclusive for 30 days!!!!" stuff I remember from PSX had to do with Black Ops III and Battlefront. But you still like those games. It might be worth examining if it's games (specific or generally) you're getting tired of, or the industry surrounding games, which leads to dumb marketing announcements like "THIS DLC IS COMING FIRST TO PLAYSTATION." You might find it more enjoyable to play what you like and ignore events like PSX or E3, if it turns out they just add unpleasant noise to your world.

I can relate, pretty much all AAA releases this year have left me cold. Looking too long at the list of games on the PS4 (almost all of which can be had on the PC for cheaper) makes me feel sad. I guess that comes with buying a console so early before it has built up a library of diverse games and established a unique flavor, I recall a similar feeling with the early days of owning a 360 (~2008).

I'm 33. I have been gaming since I was a small child. At this point in myself I give zero fucks about anything in gaming. The whole FFVII remake controversy...zero fucks. Console debut, console exclusive...zero fucks.

I just play the game I want and move on. I am more concerned about buying a ladder for the house.

I just don't care anymore.

This guy summed it up perfectly for me.

I thought I was done with gaming then I rediscovered retro gaming and it reminded me of everything I love about playing games.

I'm not done with video games. I just no longer give 2 fucks to play 90% of new games

Fair enough. Some will share your sentiment and others will not.

I skipped out entirely on the last console gen, and I don't really feel like I missed much.

This console generation on the other hand is entirely different. The PSX conference had the opposite effect on me, because it really showed that Japanese console games are coming back.

The upcoming games and new reveals jave convinced me that I need a PS4, and 2016 will be an excellent time to pick one up.

You can like and enjoy games while not giving a shit about PSX.

Nothing about that show interested me either, and the 'console debut' and '30 days earlier on PS4' shit makes me roll my eyes. That said I'm absolutely loving my current crop of games. There is some fantastic stuff out there right now.

Maybe just let the games speak for themselves, or take a break or leave em behind. Whatever works :)

As usual, Null dropping the level headed knowledge. Sometimes a break helps.

I'll reiterate that taking a break is not only fine, but may reinvigorate your passion.

PSX is, like all company events (as well as big events like E3) is nothing but marketing hype. Try ignoring all of it for awhile, and then give games a shot, without it, a few months down the road.

Well, as long as you don't get in this stage:

You're fine and we won't have a problem.

Game Informer did a write up of their favorite 10 PSX indie games that I rather liked for obvious reasons (our game was on the list): http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...ies-from-the-playstation-experience-2015.aspx

I'd be interested in seeing other indie write-ups, regardless of whether or not they mention us. :)

After reading your post and going to the link, I'm now interested in your game! So, thanks for sharing, haha. I find with indies that the sheer volume of games that are available make it artificially hard for me to decide to devote any time into perusing them to figure out if I would be interested. If it isn't presented prominently on PSN or offered with PS+, or talked about to some degree here then I just won't know about it, even though I don't feel at all biased against them.

I am more concerned about buying a ladder for the house.

I'm still very into in gaming as a hobby, but I'm largely in the same place as you right now.

You know you're an adult when you're doing chores and suddenly realize you're more invested in it than half the games you've played this year

Honestly, I don't understand the disappointment. For someone who likes Japanese games, 2016 is a very promising year. Many games arriving, with some real ambition behind them.

When I look at all those announced games, I feel like we are going to have some pretty decent gaming hours. For example Street Fighter V, Final Fantasy VII (probably 2017), Final Fantasy XV, NioH, Ni No Kuni 2, Gravity Daze 2, Persona 5, Valkyria Chronicles, Attack on Titan etc...

Those look like fine games.

Yeah, PSX was really really disappointing. I haven't played much recently in general nor had the time too, maybe I'm starting to lose interest too.

I don't consider myself old, but still enough to witness the fall of gaming in the last few years.

- Season passes
- Timed exclusives
- Paid DLCs
- Online-only features/games

It seems like complete packages were centuries ago. Of course there's new classics and worthwhile games, but overall I feel the industry took a turn for the worst, embracing the culture of microtransactions and mobile-like content. If it weren't for indies, I'd have lost all hope for this industry governed by greed. Even highly-anticipated sequels are getting butchered nowadays, and everything was a remaster too which doesn't help.

It's pretty telling when you know that Blizzard is working on Diablo 2 and Starcraft in HD, both games are superior to their sequels 10+ years later.

I didn't even pay attention to this PSX event, and I continue to love and be impressed by gaming.

I'm betting you pay too much attention to gaming culture. Diversify yo.

I think there are more varied and interesting game experiences than ever before, but sorting through the shit to get to them is a full time job.

I've been passionately gaming for about 14 years now and I've never had this issue yet. My tastes in gaming have changed a lot, as I go mostly for story driven titles these days and I am as likely to binge play a game series as a TV boxset - I will often jump between them.

Until such a time as games stop telling stories, I will love them.

I think I should clarify. I was typing that in the Doctor's waiting room. I am just tired of all the incessant bitching and moaning about a hobby. I don't help it by reading Twitter and NeoGAF but it's just amazing how much people about every damn thing. So really I do it to myself.

For instance, FFVII-Remake looking like it will be a multi-part series. I mean is anybody really surprised? VII has been Squeenix's most exploited FF game with movies, spin-offs and other cross media content. It is being remade and that invites the remakers to do something different. Guess people are confusing remake for remaster.

But look at other FF games, X had a sequel, XIII had two sequels. This is Square-Enix we are all talking about what do you expect them to do? Not exploit Final Fantasy to the fullest extent?

I'll probably buy it, I just don't care what publishers do anymore. If I don't like what they're doing I won't buy the product, otherwise I am not gonna waste my time complain. Bigger things to deal with.

Ignore the present or the future and play your backlog. You'll relearn your love of gaming. Well, it worked for me. Dabu dabu.

I was hoping the trail mix I gave you would've given you the energy to get through the key note after waiting in line all night. :(

It could just be a phase for you, I've gone through this before where I won't play anything for a couple of months and then start playing again. You might be growing out of it as a hobby too, that does happen.

it happens man, i stopped gaming as a whole at some point in time when i had my PS3. that;s when i focused in a new hobby instead and my life got ruined but c'est la vie

Not really. I mean I've had times where I stopped playing for a while, but mostly just due to time constraints with work and relationships. But right now, I feel like it's like we're in another golden age of gaming, admittedly with a shit encrusted lining around it with all the EA/Ubi/Konami/etc and (some) mobile shenanigans, but generally speaking I've been playing one amazing thing after the other.

Western games have never been this good and plentiful, Japanese games are still as ace as always although there's less of them being made these days, indies are making glorious shit all the time. I mean I really can't complain much.

Are you me? I blurted out "I hate this industry now" when the conference ended. Maybe I'm tired of Sony telling half a lie to make ps4 owners feel special. I applauded Epic for being honest about their game being on PC also

/endrant

Forcing yourself to get excited about anything (especially gaming) is a sure fire way to do the opposite. Not saying "my way" is right, but I'll play a game I really wanted to play, have my time with it, and then take a month or two (maybe longer) off before playing something new.

It also doesn't help that the future lineup for every console is FUCKING BORING.

Just go with it. For many years I was doing 90% of my gaming on handhelds, wondering why I even buy home consoles that I never play. Suddenly things flipped for me and I'm deep into playing my ps4 now. I was even traveling this weekend, brought my handhelds and didn't even touch them. Was reading instead.

Really excited to watch PSX actually, but mostly just to see what snake oil they're peddling this time.

I am close to stopping gaming altogether as well. Souls games aside, I am really struggling to keep myself interested in gaming. The last non-Souls game I enjoyed was Undertale and games like that one are so rare... At any rate, one thing I know more sure is that I am 100% done with multiplayer games. I don't have the time, interest or motivation to keep playing an endless game that I will never get good at and that will never have any positive impact in my life. I guess I am getting old and boring.

Sounds like the vita you're thinking about buying will suit you perfectly, the suspend/resume feature really helps you to get straight into shorter sessions of gaming.

You also don't have to worry about conferences as it's barely ever mentioned during them, there is an excellent upcoming vita games thread in the community section though.
