After PSX, I suddenly stopped caring about gaming.

Just take a break OP. I used to be absolutely obsessed with the concept of marathoning multiple anime shows in a week (while still in school). It was all I did, and I eventually burned out and took over a full year break from even touching the medium. Now I can enjoy it (in much more healthy intervals) again.

Sometimes these things just need time, OP

I actually kind of felt like this. Usually when TGA or PSX are coming around, I won't miss them for the world. This year? I didn't watch TGA and PSX did nothing for me. I don't know what's wrong.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the people disappointed over PSX. Reading the hype thread was super cringe, the wishlists people had built up in their minds was frankly embarrassing and never gonna come to fruition.

But when it gets to the point where you want to vomit while watching a press conference, you might want to stop playing games for a long period and then maybe touch base with friend and family.
Maybe even seek some kind of counselling, as that's not a normal reaction to a corporation showing their upcoming products.

I think the PSX keynote pissed me off more than anything. The Crash tease was stupid, announce it in front of 5000 of your fans if you're going to where it'll get a reaction, not at E3 in front of all the miserable press. The console debut, console exclusive, console exclusive content stuff needs to just honestly fuck off. It's confusing, annoying, and I don't think anyone gives a fuck that you get a game 30 days early or you get map packs 15 days early. There is definitely such a thing as too many indies. Ending on a fucking moba?

Ni No Kuni 2 did make me emotionally jump out my seat though. But that was like 1 gold nugget in a pile of dinosaur dung. You got that gold, but you still just clawed through a bunch of shit, and now you stink of shit, and probably feel like a piece of shit.

I'm just really getting burned out on open world games. After I "finish" Fallout 4, my back log includes The Wither 3 and Just Cause 3, and it just sounds like work to get into another world.
I think I just need to take a break from AAA releases and stick to simpler games for a while. Maybe I'll go back to Super Mario Maker as a palate cleanser

I originally read the title as "After the PSX (as in the original Playstation), I stopped caring about gaming." I thought this was all going to be a more controversial topic and everything, but never mind I guess. :p

Definitely have my own gaming cycles. Usually around black friday I just start powering through games until around February when I'm done with the games I purchased during the holiday season. After that I just grab the releases I really want and play games like CSGO and SF4 that I've played for years. Then black friday I pickup more fall releases and games from earlier in the year I deemed not worth the $60 and it starts over again.

Sad to say but think I'm just burnt out. I own a PS4, Xbox One and pretty damn good gaming PC. None of the major AAA releases this holiday season really did anything for me. To be brutally honest, I was really excited to play a game I'd finished years ago (Super Star Wars) on PS4. I'm even looking to get back into games of old (I'm trying to find a way to play Doom 64).
I guess I just need a rest from all the unfinished new games. All the patches that will fix problems in games. I miss the old days when, If a game was broken, it was broken, but we knew a delayed game generally meant quality (at least being a Nintendo fan it did).
Maybe I'm just jaded and need some time off gaming but it seems NOTHING coming up is exciting me at all! Maybe the NX will ignite something in me...

Start playing Minecraft. It's so simplistic, pure gameplay, no jaded story about saving a dame in distress or the whole world from a mad man etc, just digital LEGO with survival and exploration gameplay, and it runs great on XB1/PS4. Great to play with kids too, let them help you build or come up with ideas for your house, turn a wolf to your pet, grow some vegetables, fish, make cakes, explore the world, etc, and when they're asleep you can go down below where it's scary and kill monsters, mine ore and diamonds etc. Don't believe the haters, it's awesome.

Bloodborne was the only game I beat this year & kept playing after. Across the room I see Batman, The Witcher, ESO, Until Dawn, Mario Maker, Black Ops, Battlefront, MGSV. All with probably 10 or less hours played.

Even Fallout, who's series I just adore, is at a stand still at level 13 after buying it day one.

I'm with you OP. I feel a break coming up & I just hope I don't lose the passion I once had for games. Sucks.

I sometimes think the internet influences these feelings of frustration and apathy. It's sad that you have to make an effort to find the good, inspiring stuff through all of the loud, angry, sarcastic noise that populates the vast majority of sites.

I find that I'm happiest about games on those days where I'm not on forums, YouTube, etc., and just playing and enjoying a game that I feel like playing. I also get psyched and excited when I talk games in person with my friends, especially when we're playing the same one(s).

Thinking over the past year I never finished....

Bloodborne, witcher, MGS, black ops and fallout.

I probably put the most time into destiny, animal crossing and smash Bros.

Hm

I've felt the same way for a few months now. I was so into games till August, but then I just started getting bored so quickly. I even made a thread about it. I've realized that I read GAF so much, that I burn out on games just by reading and talking about them. What helped me was cutting down my GAF time, and focus on actually playing games.

It's worked for me somewhat, but there's still that feeling sometimes that I might quit gaming at any moment. I enjoy less and less games, and I usually find myself playing shorter games. It's very frustrating.

Well, I do have gaming cycle as well.

RPG --> FPS --> narrative game -->Blizzard game --> card game

Usually addict to one genre for a few months and switch to other genre.

2015 has been a poor year for gaming and we saw little to none inovation or really great games. It's just a tame year. Lot of annoncement but few great game to play. Even big awaited release like halo 5 and mgsv have dropped the ball quite a bit. And 2016 won't be better it seems. There's some reason to be disapointed.

Totally disagree. It's been an great year and next year looks twice as good.

I feel bad that some aren't loving gaming anymore but it's not reflected in the games quality.

>Complaining about lack of innovation
>Probably only plays AAA budget games
Not sure...

Go get a WiiU.

Im actually surprised that someone could be tired of hearing about now niche stuff like Yakuza and Final Fantasy. Its not like you hear much about it...and it is a big deal for us to get Y5 and Y0. Much like the whole campaign to get Xenoblade in NA.

Usually its the reverse in a thread. People tired of hearing about CoD, Assassins Creed, Madden, etc.

PSX is done for the sake of commercialism. It seems like the presenters' rhetoric was directed towards young children and the easily excited gamers.

It didn't do much for me either.

Ah the weekly ' am I outgrowing gaming?' thread.

TC, habits and interests change over time. Just roll with the punches. 2 years into this gen and I still havent budged on ps4/xb1. I see all the deals discussed and I say 'ohhhhhh I want in'....but then the moment passes and I see my mostly gathering dust(gamewise) 360 and ps3, my occassionally played wii u and vita, and I ask mysef exactly why I need anthor console? Especially since getting a gaming PC which takes care of the vast majority of games Im interested in. Even then, Ive gotten more into indies, tower defense, rts type games and away from these sprawling AAA open world games.

In addition, I've been interested in stop-and-go games like Civilization - KOTOR - and many other games where you can save at your turn and continue on later. I have also been seriously interested in games that allow for you to just pick it up, shoot a couple of baddies in a survival type mode, or race around in a time trial with no dedication to campaign, nothing to unlock, just hop in and go.

Games like Call of Duty are (surprisingly) becoming more appealing to me now. They are quick, I can play a match before class starts to get that gaming itch scratched, and put it down without having that "one more mission" feeling. Star Wars Battlefront, despite having no offline mode, was one of my favorite games that I tried out in hand with Driveclub Bikes, which seriously reminds me of PGR 4, and a few others..
Sound to me like you haven't stopped caring about gaming, rather you are just caring about different types of games.

I felt like I had been reduced to the level of a child being told that PlayStation is going to receive specific console first, and that 'you'll be receiving content 30 days before the other guys'.
I always take that stuff as filler and as an accessory to the current deals going on between the different companies at any given time, but because I do not care about it (I hardly ever buy DLC anyway) I find it hard to get worked up or have strong opinions on it. I usually switch off during that stuff and simply take away only what I'm personally interested in from these conference events.

For me (32-year-old gamer), the eighth generation of home console is by far the worst that I 've seen and i play since NES/MasterSystem.

I'm 33. I have been gaming since I was a small child. At this point in myself I give zero fucks about anything in gaming. The whole FFVII remake controversy...zero fucks. Console debut, console exclusive...zero fucks.

I just play the game I want and move on. I am more concerned about buying a ladder for the house.

I just don't care anymore.

Ready for the BombCast.

Weirdly last gen nearly saw me want to pack in gaming. But now I am 36 and enjoying gaming as much as I did in the late 90's.

I look at the games announced for the coming year or more and get extremely happy about the medium. Seeing Rez and AC7 announced for VR has even turned me around on VR gaming.

Edit: I think only having one platform is helping my enthusiasm too, this is the first gen where I only have one platform, even as a young kid I had an Atari 2600 and Spectrum ZX.

I found myself shifting around six months ago too.

More PC/Free Blizzard games like HoTS and Hearthstone, slight dip into Diablo 3 for awhile again. Fallout 4 did it for me but not much on the horizon that grasps me.

I'm getting old.

I think I grew out of gaming too. I'm not as interested in gaming like I used to. I rarely play now. Maybe it has to do with me having so much work and things to do around the house. Call of Duty doesn't excite me like it used to. The last couple of CoDs have been extremely mediocre. Bought fallout 4 and have barely played it.

Make of it what you'd like.

For the record, I went to have fun, not to see who's corporate dick is longer.

You went to a event specifically for marketing and advertising their products, and you're surprised and outraged by the marketing... lol

I hardly get excited about anything announced at conference or throughout the year.
For example: Fallout 4 is my goto game for the time being (previously MGSV and previously GTA5) when I feel like playing a new game I check out the latest releases - look at the reception and buy it the next time I'm out shopping. No time for all these indies unfortunately or PS+ subscriptions et al either.
The purchases are very few and far between.

I didn't really like the PSX show either, but it didn't make me want to quit gaming. There are still plenty of games out there that I enjoy.

Now that I'm older I find myself caring a lot less about "gaming news."

I have an x1 and a ps4, so no announcement of exclusivity or any other big piece of news doesn't even appear as a blip on my excitement radar.

I have always been incapable of getting excited for exclusive stuff, but now I find myself not even getting hyped any more for games. Halo 2 and 3 were my last big excitements. But I think it works out in the long wrong, because my expectations are modest, so games don't really disappoint me any more.

I also hated this year PSX because of no first party stuff which is the point of PSX mostly (Hopefully sony wont repeat next year, if they did then i will stop watching PSX totally) but it did not stop me caring about games still. We already had plenty of games announced this year and will going to be next year. So there is plenty to look forward from early next year from big studios.

I'm also spending less time with videogames as a form of entertainment. It's basically just Netflix now. I do go back to old simpler games on SNES that don't take up too much time though.

I sometimes go through lulls myself. It is currently taking a great amount of effort to put in Fallout 4 or Uncharted 2 lately and I've completely abandoned my 3ds.

I imagine I'll become hooked on Fallout 4 again in a few weeks for whatever reason.

(I was also somewhat disappointed with PSX, but that hasn't affected my gaming habits)

Honest question... what are you doing in a gamming forum??? Looking for ladders?

I kinda get you but for different reasons, I'm still interested in games but there was about 3 titles including FFVII Remake I was interested in at PSX.
The rest I would have been questioning my interest if thats all there was.
I don't mind indies but I think there's way too much focus on them.
Not that I want less, but I don't want to watch a whole conference which indicates that's all that's coming.

OP, my takeaway from your post is that yes, the Vita is a good call. If you're not concerned with having the games with the biggest hype/advertising budgets, you'll find it's a stylish device with a surpassingly cool library that is nicely compatible with an adult's lifestyle.

I am not entirely sure if this is just solely down to my experience at PSX, but I feel like games and I have been distanced.

While everyone was at the conference freaking out about Final Fantasy, Yakuza 5, Destiny Racing, Street Fighter V, I was just kind of overwhelmed, and at one point during the conference, I kind of just scoffed and said in my mind "who the fuck cares?". The "exclusive" to PlayStation stuff during the conference made me want to vomit a bit.

I felt like I had been reduced to the level of a child being told that PlayStation is going to receive specific console first, and that 'you'll be receiving content 30 days before the other guys'. I just cannot see what the big deal is about some of these games, and why people dedicate so much to them.

I considered purchasing a PS Vita so that I can play around while on my daily commute since I take public transit like the train and bus.

I guess life's responsibilities are coming up on me and aren't giving me the time to sit down and properly give these games a chance. Maybe it is that and the fact that I was also underwhelmed about the line-up at PSX.

I tried to take interest in these games, but I just couldn't find any. Instead of me saying "oh, that looks fun.", I start looking into the art design of the game like "that looks pretty". Most of the games looked great from an artistic standpoint, but in terms of gameplay, I just couldn't find any interest in the games.

This isn't exclusive to PS games, as I have lost interest in most of the games on Xbox's side as well.

Does anyone else feel like this, or has gone through this?

Just out of curiosity, did you watch MS 2013 E3 press conference? :-D

Anyway, take a break, return after a while and it will be fine and dandy! Everyone has those moments. I use gaming to distract me from everyday responsibilities.
