Aion: The Tower Of Eternity

I pre-bought from NC Soft too, so I'm there for at least the first 37 days. I don't expect the GAF legion to last though... The Warhammer guild was doing great, but when the free month ran out 90% of the guild quit without a word.

Anyway, I'd love for the game to be more duo/group based for quests if people actually grouped. I've only had one successful group this phase. Most others I ask to group say no or don't reply at all. It's especially bad when you have 3-4 people trying to get a single spawn mob any they all turn down requests for group invites. And because of the claim system only the highest DPS gets credit.
That's easily fixed. Just go to another channel and boom. Same mob, no waiting.

1) It's a preview weekend. It's silly to expect people to really know what to do right now. Especially when it comes to grouping. I think you're jumping the gun here. Heck, the first month alone will be like that.

2) Switch channels. =)

NC Soft has done a bad job of really getting information out there on this game. A lot of people didn't know you PvP existed outside of the Abyss. All you heard was 25+ = PvPvE in the Abyss. OOPS.

Also, when players get a look at how quickly their xp jumps up, they will experience "number shock". 1.6 million xp until next level at lvl 20-21? BAM. Number shock. NC Soft needs to get proper information out there fast. They need to get version 1.5 into players hands, fast.

Like you though, I expect a gigantic fall off after the first month. Huge.

What I noticed is people hate eachother, at least on EU servers.

I found few nice guys(2-3) that parties with me and helped me but most will kill steal and let you die.
You would think someone would help you with at least 1 hit to finish off mob so you don't die, but noo...
Hope it gets better. Next week I'm trying sorcerer, too bad I gotta go and can't play today :/

I've seen a lot of complaints about the community on the beta boards too, but I dunno. Maybe I've just grown to expect this sort of thing. I have a theory - the more popular a mmo is, the more idiots play it too :p

My first mmo was DAoC, and generally you knew everyone who played on your server. I mean the server limits were probably around 2000 or something, and divide that among 3 factions.. Anyway, people were really friendly and helpful. When I moved to WoW, I was literally shocked how selfish and inconsiderate people were.

I'm just seeing the same thing here, people are selfish and unhelpful. But on the more difficult areas, say the gate quest at the end of the starter area, I've had people asking me into group, if I've been dying someone has helped me and thrown me a few heals or helped kill the mob on me. I've been doing it too, I try to heal/buff people I run past with my chanter, check their health if they need help - yesterday I gave some dude a full green leather set and a sword and he probably made me his new best friend or something. Someone even asked if I was going to gather a node I was standing around and killing stuff yesterday. Needless to say I was shocked :lol

What I'm saying is, it's a popular game, lots of people playing; don't expect people to be nice and behave - you might be surprised nicely if you don't. At least on Ariel people are nice - but of course there are idiots too, that's just statistics :p

That's because the majority of the players on our server are people who can't or barely can speak or understand English. I've been ignored countless of times on my early levels. After lv20 people become a bit more active when it comes to chatting and helping though.
But yeah, this is the reason why I would love a GAF Legion. :/

edit: I'll try Spiritmaster during the next weekend, we could play together if you want to. It'll be much more fun. I've gotten my Gladiator to lv20 with a companion, and I've had a lot more fun with it then on my Ranger, which I completely solo'd to 16.

There is a GAF legion on Vaizel called Destiny. I think we have about 20-30 members. It's worked out quite well too as we've been able to chat with one another about the game, group up for quests, help each other out, etc. I hope the legion with the same group of people is rebuilt when the game launches.

Totally lost interest in playing WoW, but this game does look pretty cool. I might have to pick it up and give it a try, I just hope it's not another let down like Age of Conan was for me.

Pretty much this (never did play Conan though). I'm interested, but a bit hesitant that I will get burn-out within the first month or two. Templar looks awfully fun however. :D We will have to see.

Yeah (Ninten, Nentin here)

Really hope it manages to make it to launch. Loved the legion.

So, I managed to get a hold of a beta key from a friend.... Do any of you know if the beta key also include the other preorder bonuses like items and such? Or do I have to preorder the game for that?

Got my key today at the of the beta weekend so i only got to play for a few hours.
Made an elyos scout and got up to level 8. A shame i didn't get farther because i really wanted to try out the wings.

Really awesome game so far, very beautiful (especially the female characters ;D). I like it a lot more than WoW already.

Just wanted people to keep in mind with Aion as well. There are no PvE or RP servers. Everything from 20+ is open to straight up PvP and ganks through the use of "rifts" that open into each sides leveling zones. Can lead to some interesting encounters including getting destroyed while questing. Leveling Abyss is completely open to PvP and ganking as well.

Basically, if you're coming from a MMO with little PvP background, be warned that you will PvP in Aion. PvP will mix with PvE and vice versa. I'm not sure if you can level by PvPing. You may get a little xp or something. Not sure.

Just prepare yourself for that and if that sounds good. Go for it. If not, don't waste your money. Also, don't get caught up in "carebear vs hardcore" shit on forums. Waste of time.

Just getting that out there.

I found this on the Aion forums however I don't know if it's implemented yet or if it will be in the next patch (1.5?) and CB#6.

I didn't do any PvPing myself in CB#5 due to the lag so I can't talk from experience. It was frustrating enough doing PvE, I could just imagine the nerd rage trying to PvP with all the rubber banding and 30+ second freezes. :lol

Anyway, Aion apparently has a penalty system for 'gankers':

The Slayer System

If you go on a killing rampage in enemy territory (does not apply to the Abyss), you will receive penalties for doing so. This is called the Slayer System. This system, is downright amazing as it doesn’t strictly prohibit or punish killing enemy players, but at the same time it discourages casual ganking. As the game ages, if you want to gank you’re going to want to have a large raiding party to do it. The effects are as follows:

* 1. Depending on the amount of kills you will receive points. If your points go over a certain limit, you will receive the penalty effects. If you kill lower leveled players than you, you will receive more points.
* 2. The penalty effects come in two flavors. One is a Curse which denies you the use of rifts. The second is a Judgment and under this effect you cannot be resurrected in any Kisk placed in the enemy territory, as well as use rifts.
* 3. The name of the Curse/Judgment depends on the race. If you are Elyos, you will receive Curse/Judgment of Asphel. Asmodians will get Curse/Judgment of Ariel.
* 4. Once you come under Curse or Judgment, your location will be revealed throughout the local map for the entire opposing faction members. Also, even if you are under a hiding skill, your title will be seen, making it even easier to be spotted.
* 5. You must go back to your own lands or the Abyss and wait for a certain amount of time for the Curse or Judgment to disappear.
* 6. If you or someone else kills a slayer, 12 nearby players of the dead body will receive buffs.
* 7. The killer of the slayer will be announced throughout the area chat under the format of [Race]’s Hero [Killer of the Slayer] has defeated [Slayer] while he was under [Judgment or Curse] of [Ariel or Asphel].

correct, anyone who believes that its possible to just not pvp in this game is dead wrong. the abyss is completely open and you will encounter multiple enemies per hour. from eltnen/morheim on you will also have the rifts and by design (invading enemy territory) most people move through these in groups and dont break a sweat destroying all solo/duo players in their way. the infiltration quests force you close to the main base of the region you invade, which means that most of the time these groups will move over 2/3rds of the region to get there, which also means that the chance of an encounter is substantial. if they die they just repop at their kisk and try again, too.

if you dont want to pvp or tend to get frustrated when being ganked/zerged then simply dont buy this game.

oh and you dont get any "direct" xp for pvp kills, only abyss points. there are "pvp kill quests" which reward items and xp, though.

CAW said:

Yeah, it's got a system. As it is now though, the "penalty" is laughed at by players. It's not nearly as effective as they think.

Very interested in the game. I just got a new PC and it's great except the graphics card, it's a Geforce G210 (512MB), it's a newer card but not commercially available yet, only installed on pre-built machines. I want to preorder and try the beta though, I was just wondering how the game performs with this card, I seriously doubt anyone here has tried it but I thought I'd ask nonetheless.

edit: nvm just realized the beta is closed anyway :lol oh well gives me enough time to get a better card installed anyway.

Cool, nice to hear something concrete about the PvP system. Tbh it sounds intriguing, and less exposed to camping as such, seeing as it's much more random (barring the abyss ofc). I have to say I've shied away from PvP in other games, except my first year in WoW, but mostly because PvP felt so static. Sure, you can never really be safe in Aion either, but a portal opening in the middle of a questing zone with lots of players might just be the best thing since sliced bread :lol

What I've been reading about the Abyss zones is that the experience rewards from mob kills and quests there is of much greater value than normal PvE quests in the (relatively) safe areas.

Anyway, in another topic, had a fun beta weekend again - ended up running with a small party at the end of it and having tons of fun. The classes really mesh well and work together in a group. 2 weeks for the next beta weekend, damn :p

Well, I was interested in joinin' this game, but being able to be ganked while PvEing is not my thing. There were penalties in Lineage 2 also for ganking, but it didn't stop people from doing it and I doubt it will stop people in this game as well. I guess it's back to WoW.

Oh man, on the last beta night a group of 15ish Elyos decided to mop up morhiem. Slowly sent everyone to town as the cleared the zone. Then when they finally made it to the front gates of the fortress 50+ Asmodians were waiting for them.

The ensuing battle and epic chase was breath taking.

I enjoyed finding ambush point to use against ambushers. Gliding is the most awesome mechanic ever. Hiding ontop of mushrooms, cliffs, in trees, suprise dive bombing people on the ground. Was great.

I wanted to get past 25, but I just couldn't. Too much fun chasing down reds.

P.S. Giant roaming bird raid boss in the desert is BADDDDD BADDDD.

This is a PVP/RvR game, not a PVE game like WoW :D, I tryied CB5# and i need to say i love the game, but anyway it will last til FFXIV.

Meanwhile i will be playing FFXI and Aion as MMORPG.

Pretty much, Aion from the ground up is a faction PvP game with a third NPC faction for balance/content. If you don't can't handle competition and dying from time to time. Don't come knocking.

In fact the latest raid instance is SHARED by two raid groups I believe. Working your way through the instance as fast as you can while trying to sabotage the other raids efforts.

The original comments (back during Chinese beta) were saying it was a PvE game with some PvP stuff. I figured that was a bunch of PR BS to get people to try it out. Heh, I have a friend at NCsoft who mentioned that also. I think he was misinformed. I have no desire to deal with that kind of stuff, so I won't be playing. Which is a shame because I was looking for another game to check out to rotate with WoW. Won't be this one, however.

NC always was terrible at advertising, I'll give you that.

Tried the Beta that was like 2 weeks ago, got to level 13 or something I believe.
First of all I gotta say, it's a very optimized game which is a big plus in my book.
Even WAR lagged on my computer but moving around some sliders and stuff I got this to run from 30-50 fps which is workable in an mmo.

Aside from that, I can't really say I got into the game. The combat can be pretty fun with the combos and stuff, and it looks nice (especially for an mmo), but it also feels a bit stiff coming from WoW where it feels more fluid and varied IMO.
The customization is astounding, but at the same time I think 2 races is a bit low, both humanoid as well. Miss the variety. The same thing goes for the classes, which pretty much are your standard warriors, mages and rogues.

Didn't have much luck in partying, everyone seemed to be just running around doing their thing and all in all I guess it's just too korean/asianish for my taste.
Just don't find the world/feeling/atmosphere/lore/game appeal to me like WoW did for example.
I can see why enjoy the game though, it has that nice blend of Lineage meets WoW.

Might just be burned out on mmos/games atm, SW:ToR will have to be the judge.

hmm maybe i should try this one out, it's not like i'll stop playing WoW just by trying it :)

I'd say it's definitely worth a try. At least the open beta. After the first month I see this thing dropping like a rock. The negative aspects in this game (ganking, kill stealing, etc) will be exposed big time when it hits the US (where assholes love to be assholes openly) and the wedge between PvE and PvP will be driven deeply. After the first few months, this game will be absolutely brutal to anyone new looking to join as the haves will rip up the have nots. :lol

To be honest, after two beta weekends, I'm burnt out. NC Soft really hosed a lot of people inbetween those two beta events. =/

so I preordered the collectors edition from steam and it says I can play the beta until retail launches...downloaded the game and it says I don't have access. Do I have to do something else to get in and play?

That sounds just like a PvP server on WoW. And real men played on PvP servers.

I agree with this. I think this game will have probably 2-3 months of decent hype, then fall to the wayside like all the others (in the states, anyway).

The next contender for the WoW crown is The Old Republic for sure. Lets hope that isn't same old, same old.

I don't care about the WoW crown and neither should anyone else. I just meant any sort of healthy player base to make a PvPvE based game worth playing months after release.

The next closed beta weekend begins on Aug 14th at 3PM EST. You won't have access until that time.

Pre-ordering the game grants you access to the closed beta events:

* Closed Beta Event #4
* July 17-July 20
* Focus: Elyos and Asmodian levels 1-25
* Closed Beta Event #5
* July 31-August 3
* Focus: Elyos and Asmodian levels 1-30
* Closed Beta Event #6
* August 14-August 17

* Focus: TBD

True, it just seems like every MMO that comes out follows the "rage quit WoW for <game>, play <game> for free month, realize how good WoW really is and/or quit mmos" pattern nowadays. I'd like to see a game come out and really shake things up a bit...

I should see that being TOR perhaps. We'll see. I think Aion can fill a niche in the MMO space, but NC Soft's marketing is going to blow it.

NC Soft already has over 3mil ppl playing Aion, and that's without US and EU. I think that their marketing is paying off. :)

Yeah, I don't really care how many play in China/Korea. Never did in WoW either. Those numbers are always misleading due to how they pay (per hour). I care about here. =P Right now, their marketing here in the US is pretty bad. There's many aspects of the game they just haven't explained very well such as their PvP system and just how cutthroat it can be. For example, rifting it not mentioned on their official website. nor is the PvP penalty system. Nor tons of other things.

There's "fortresses". Not sure if they're the same in your mind. Capture them to unlock dungeons for your side. Keep them to keep them open. Not sure of other benefits. It's not explained well.

To be fair, most game websites are terrible for actually providing information. I just clicked over to the Devil Survivor website, since it's a game I was playing. Zero information about gameplay mechanics, just a lot of setting and character introduction. Plus, they do have an official Wiki that'll probably get filled in quite quickly. After all, the game's not even in open beta yet. :lol

Thats exactly what I mean, thats awesome. Can guilds claim them and upgrade them to make them stronger?

Its actually more like 1.5 million but who expects accuracy from rumors started by blogs these days.

After this last beta weekend and WoW 3.2 starting today I probably wont be getting Aion until November or December if I get it at all.

The Rift abuse by the Elyos was just terrible. I dont mind PvP but this was just griefing at its worst.

Another reason for the delay would be to try and find a balanced server. The closed beta is showing a clear advantage to the Elyos and population imbalance is death to a 2 faction PvP based MMO.

The Wiki is poor. The game has been out for quite awhile. You'd think that Wiki would be much more filled out than it is. Only thing close is Aion Armory I guess. I guess coming from Warhammer or Age of Conan, they have dev blogs, docs and information on their sites so I knew exactly what I was getting into. There are sites/forums that fill in the blanks though, but you have to run a fanboy filter through that shit because players are rapib already.

I don't believe so. It's not like Warhammer.

Yeah, Aion's gotta be careful not to just become a haven for Bots and Gankers, all that'll do is mean big first month numbers and quick crashes back to Earth as people get frustrated.

Might just be me, but if I was in charge of localization, I probably wouldn't post every single quest, piece of equipment, map, game mechanic, ect BEFORE the game releases.

Fansites would beat you to it anyway. Got people playing with English patches before this even started. =P

If you were in charge of localization, I'd have some words for you because your performance up to this point would be total shit.
