Aion US Beta 2 (June 19 - June 22)

There is. Some is lost outright and some can be bought back from a soul cleaner or whatever they're called.

Again, more antiquated game play that has me seriously wondering about Aion's western future.

Ugh, thanks for the warning. If I wanted to play EQ again, I'd just re-install it. Or better yet I'd just eat broken glass, and get the same experience without monthly fees. I don't expect every future MMO to copy World of Warcraft, but I expect them to learn from it. Grindfest garbage like XP debt and kill steals needs to die, especially if you expect to get more than a few hundred thousand subscribers. No one wants to log into a game and potentially LOSE progress in the time they get to play.

I can see not having kill stealing but jeez you should be punished for dying. What do you want a WIN button?

I hope aion doesn't go casual like that.

I don't mind a penalty for death, it's necessary so people don't just zerg stuff. But XP loss is too severe for my tastes. I don't like the idea of coming home from work, logging on for the hour or 2 I get to play, and potentially losing progress. I think WoW went in the right direction, but was a little too lenient. Take away some money, take away some time by making me run back to my corpse (or to a healer), but don't take away progress.

They will end up with more than a few hundred thousand subscribers. Which is more than enough to be profitable for many years.

But they are helping you out. Clearly you aren't meant to be fighting there if it's taking you so long to kill stuff. They our considerate enough to help you out with your target, since they can kill faster than you and all they ask for is a kindly gift--your loot. You get some exp, and a chance to scavenge the loot that wasn't up to their standards. Sounds like a fair deal.

Yeah, back when I was playing with my Templar I would get KS'd every now and then. Not so much when I played with my Summoner since I killed faster than everyone, they wouldn't bother or get a chance to. They should change it, but they won't. It is what it is.

No problem man, just trying to keep the people informed before people start saying that "WoW is doomed now that Aion is out."

Well, when you put it like that, it doesn't sound AS bad. Really, my biggest concern is simply that my time in-game is meaningful. I don't get a lot of time to play, so being able to log in, do some quests/kill some mobs and make progress is very important to me. WoW handled this the best of any MMO I've played, but I played that game for 4 years, it's time for something new. Honestly, despite my whining about these things, I'll probably try the game anyway, I need my MMO fix. :D

This is being disingenuous. When a level 5 warrior attacks level 4 or 5 mobs (which they can do easily), and a mage comes along and steals your kill because they can and they want the mob, that has nothing to do with whether or not you should be fighting the mob and everything to do with antiquated bullshit.

it was meant to be, since I was being sarcastic. I know it's hard to tell on the internet.

The quests are pretty easy, and similar to what you experienced in WoW. It's a fun game overall despite the outdated flaws. At least worth a try, like you said.

Are there any elements to the game that take advantage of the first M in MMO? For the most part, I feel like MMOs are disjointed experiences that really don't warrant the number of players on the server.

The world itself is instanced in a sense (a zone might have 10 copies of itself), so you may be disappointed.

so I plopped down my fiver and picked up a code, but man is it downloading slowly. Between the slow DL and tonight's Ulduar, I really probably won't get too much time to try it. However, once we inch off of 64% and knock off the other 35 ticks of that equation, I will be on tonight and will post my extremely qualified (snicker) impressions a little later. Well. Way later. Waay, waaaaay, waaaaaaaaay later.

What's up with the running animations in these NCSoft games? It's the same as in Lineage where everybody runs with their upper body at 90 degrees with their lower body. Nobody runs like that!

On the other hand, the elaborate animations of the emotes are amazing. An incredible amount of work must have gone into those.

Leonardo? Day 1!

Wow, great, so basically what we've got here is Asian flavored WoW HD?

I have absolutely no problem with that.

Seriously, I'm having a blast with this game. The atmosphere is just gorgeous, the combat is fast, engaging, and feels like it has real impact, and I haven't been ks'ed yet. The music is often kinda meh but occasionally bursts out of nowhere with these really nifty tunes. I'm playing a priest right now, and let me tell you; it is actually getting challenging, and I'm only level 6. At first, it was wow style total single player rollface, but now some of these mobs are putting me through my paces, like these awesome looking ghosts I'm trying to steal loot from.

Some negative stuff. For the most part, the translation is the best I've seen in one of these K-games, but then again my only reference here is uh, Flyff, I think, and requiem: bloodymare, so. I've seen a couple of lines that looked a little Engrish. The first time I grind up to the level cap and raid a huge boss and narrowly achieve victory to hear "Victory get!! Please to enjoy the sensation!" I'm out. The video requirements are fairly intense, I've got stuff turned down fairly low and I get a lot of pop-in and my computer sounds like an old hatchback trying to get up a hill. That's more my fault, tho, due to the fact that I'm running a decent video card on a 275 watt power supply. so.

If your computer has the stones, I highly recommend plopping down a fiver to at least check this one out. I'm saving my final judgement on whether to buy till I get further in, but it does look pretty good.

Are the betas for this ever longer than a weekend? I was thinking about preordering to get into a beta, but three days? It's barely enough to get used to the game.

whats the score with the payment method for this? is it a one time payment like guild wars or subscription based like WoW, the screenshots make me wanna play

haha, that reminds of when I ran into look-a-likes of Michelle and Barack Obama in the Chinese beta. It was terrible when he was questing near me and he died. I saw "Barack Obama has died" pop up in the chat log lol.

there will be other beta events after this one. So you'll have another chance to play if you miss this weekend.

I need like a good two weeks straight though. I can't just say "Oh hey, it's a beta weekend, let me drop everything to play this game since I can't try it otherwise". As far as I can tell they haven't done any betas longer than a weekend, but I don't know too much about it.

Yeah, I know. I don't get why NCsoft is handling the NA version this way. The gave the Chinese version a good length of OB time, well over a month. If you're really interested, the Chinese version, which you can download, still has a few servers that are still currently free to play, I believe. There's an ENG language pak out that will change everything to English as well.

Thanks for that info. I might give it a shot, but I'd rather play the official English version is possible. It seems like they'd give a nice month long open beta to build up more interest in the game. It looks like it has the potential to hook me like WoW did, and that only took me a week to get completely obsessed. :lol

Out of curiosity picked up the code in the morning, left it downloading, and didn't get to start playing it till 10pm yesterday. I had to make myself stop playing at 4:30am.

Got a healer up to lvl 9 and played enough to know that I'm sold enough on this game already. The last ncsoft game I've played was lineage 2, and this game just does everything much better.

+The quests so far are simple enough not to be an annoyance. kill this, fetch that, not too many items of either.
+Quest windows have a nice pop up window that will pinpoint the location or target you are after, my favorite feature.
+flying back to a different location gives you some great visuals.
+there is a fantasy feeling when you're playing that screenshots just can't capture. Like the huge dragon that slowly circles the first village or looking up and seeing floating islands.
+animations and graphics. I have things maxed out and averaging 50-60fps on an average 2 yr old computer.
+character customization. I saw someone that looked just like jay leno lol. Just so many ways to customize your character.
+The Flashbacks are really something else. Good for ncsoft to actually attempt storytelling.

There is a lot more but lunch is almost ready. On the KS thing, I didn't experience that on my playthrough. Some accidental hitting here and there, but never without any ill intent. I got many random healings and buffs though.

I'll probably play just a bit more looking at other classes, and look up the differences between the clerics and the chanters.

Got my beta code but am unable to launch the game because the initial game launch (not the NCSoft launcher but the actual game) is at a higher resolution than my HDTV that I use as a monitor supports. So I just got a nice black screen with music in the background and a "reslution not supported" message on the TV.

I submitted a post on the beta boards and it seems like at least a couple of other people are having the same issue so maybe they'll fix it for the next round of beta. What amazes me is that there doesnt seem to be any easy way to modify the resolution outside of the game via an .ini file. It's all encrypted and hidden away.

Oh well.

Well you still can buy the lost exp back with money. You don`t have to grind it back. ^^

This is simply amazing. I can't believe most MMOs don't have this.

Some LOTRO mates of mine are playing the beta, but I don't thik I'm going to be playing another MMO for a while. Looks like what Guild Wars and LOTRO would look like if they had a baby.

I'll probably play just a bit more looking at other classes, and look up the differences between the clerics and the chanters

From what I gather so far (with the internet to this point helping very little) Clerics are the main healers of the game, possibly very nearly the only, and they also seem to do some damage with their distance spells that build off of that smite ability.

Chanter, which is the class I've chosen, seem to be more about melee damage and buffing the party's attack and defense powers, perhaps somewhat akin to an enhancement shaman in wow.

I recall hearing something during the class change quest about each career having to choose a path of aiding allies or defeating foes, I wonder if the split between each of the two "advanced" classes is becoming dps or having party utility, ala the gladiator/templar split of the warrior class (damage, tanking). That might be as far as that thought goes, because I'm fairly sure that spiritmaster/sorcerer and assassin/ranger are all equally "pure" damage classes, but hey who knows. I'm just kind of guessing because I can't even find a gamefaq on this title. Speaking of which, if anyone runs into a wowhead equivalent for this game (in english) lemme know.

Best place to go is Aionsource for information. Just search through the forums and you should find everything you need.

Yeah, well just in case you change your mind, the last 3 regions(not servers) of the Chinese version are free last I checked(5 mins ago :P).

There's also a GAF thread that can walk you through the setup process

Anyway, good luck with it all. I've gotten myself hooked again talking about, time to go play again. Uh, and I have a math test tomorrow. I'm easily sidetracked.
Thanks for those link, do you have any idea how long those will remain free for?

Edit: nevermind i saw at one of the link you posted, meh this seems like a waste of time for a beta that will soon be over.

I think I'll give the chinese beta a try. If any other gaffers are going to try it we should try to end up on the same server/region/whatever.

ohh, thanks, this is pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

I'm trying the other server as a light character this time (my main's Asmodean), I'm mainly looking to see how different the stories and the main cities are. I'm pretty dubious that I'll like the El guys better, but we'll see.

Anyway, I'd just like to take a sec to point out how INSANE the random character button is in this. I've played a loooot of games with random character generation (appearance wise) but this takes the cake. In 3 presses of the button I went from a grizzled, murderous mountain hobo to a guy who seriously looked like the poster boy for all metrosexuality, to a perfect mix of both. I shit you not, that is how in-depth you can be with your person's face. When I buy this retail it's going to take me a damned hour and a half to pick out a face I won't mind sticking with throughout my career.

Is their an RVR faction?

If they have adopted the WoW type of "PvP" or Lineage 2 type of "PvP" is something i'd like to know also.

In NCSoft's Lineage 2 you just can go up to any char and attack/kill him/her at any time, there is no need to enter a special area to fight other people. However special Instances for special mobs/quests/raid bosses also exists (but not for PvP).

Orin GA said:

Yes, if you mean Race vs Race.

If you run into an enemy(another Race) you can start attacking them right away. Most of the RvR will take place in the Abyss area, but you can go to enemy sections(once you're lvl 20) and have a field day if you want. You can't freely attack people in your own Race though(to my knowledge), they have arenas and PVP challanges for that.

Messing with the client today. (Waiting for my Key)
I was trying to figure out how to get nHancer to work with it.

First I found out there is no actual .exe. So I couldn't get any tweaks to work.
Secondly, its a freaking .bin.
Yes a .bin which means under ../NCSoft/Aion/bin32/ the executable is called Aion.bin. o_O

Anywho, once I got that setup I had this result. :D

Here is the nHancer setting profile.

Played about an hour or two more yesterday and managed to finished the first town and all it's quests.

I didn't quite understand the flying element. Press space bar 3 times to pop the wings and glide but didn't know how to fly up or flap my wings for more air time. How does one do that? I did see some air duels, they look great in motion.

I did a quick browse of the aionforum link provided in the last few posts and it has most of the information i was looking for. I'll spend lunch looking at skills.

I hope that all you will need in a party is a cleric(heals) and chanter(buffs) for support. For those of you that have played the betas extensively, is this the case in higher lvls? I know in L2 you needed a healer and about 3 other buffers in order to have a competent party which resulted in a lot of dual boxing, and that can get annoying.

It looks like max lvl right now is 50? or at least that's what the skills go up to, is that right? Does anyone know what the grind to 50 would be comparable to?

Also, can the 2 races party together or are they meant to be just enemies?

They have fly zones, and no fly zones. In the no fly zones you can of course only glide. The 2nd(not the one where you get your class change) major city you get to allows you to fly freely, for example.

Played the Beta this past weekend with a couple of chums, and it was a ton of fun. Our little 3-man party was warrior/rogue/mage, so we were able to supply each other with powerful gear we found for the other classes. We had Steam open for voice chat, and just chilled. The game is gorgeous, the customization is insane. I rarely felt like I was grinding; quests and exploring new areas usually got me the money/gear/experience I needed.

I think I'm sold, so this'll definitely keep me 'til FFXIV releases, and maybe even past that. We'll see. =)

I just pre-ordered for the european version of the game.

I know the closed beta is shut for the moment but I have this question anyhows:

When I try to login it says ID and password does not match.
Is this because the servers are down at the moment? Sorta made me freak out, but I hope its just a general message everybody gets cuz the servers are down?

Thanks

You should check the following: In the File->Settings menu of the NCSoft launcher, on the Advanced tab, make sure you have the European region selected.

D'oh.. that was pretty stupid. But thanks for the headsup!

*it says Aion (US) in my launcher now though, any ideas on how to fix that?*
