Akiba's Beat - Review Thread

Destructoid - 3.5

https://www.destructoid.com/review-akiba-s-beat-436266.phtml

Even if Akiba's Beat had a higher budget and more time, it lacks any unique features, mimicking what other games do, but worse. For 40 hours you'll mash X through slow dialogue, then run around a dead environment, and then do more dialogue until you get to mash square against sponges. If Akiba's Trip is the shirtless jock who kicks the door with beers in hand, Akiba's Beat is the timid cocktail-drinker standing in the corner with one hand in his pocket. Technically functional, but spiritually dead.

I'll be honest, I even forgot this game got delayed and was coming.

From Destructoid:

..Successor to Akiba's Trip, but officially unrelated, Akiba's Beat is shallow due to an obviously tight budget and lack of self-identity. Gone are the elements of stripping, dressing up, fighting in the streets, romancing, advanced techniques, and even weapons. Akiba's Beat is basically Akiba's Trip with all the things that made the previous game addicting replaced with blander alternatives. It also kept the bland bits of Trip, unfortunately.
...

Ouch.

Very unfortunate, I thought Akiba Strip was a great 7/10 game and was looking forward to the successor.

...
Wait, the game doesn't even have a walking animation??

They're referencing in Akiba Strip, there were several walking styles you could unlock. Western swagger, skipping, yadda yadda.

What are those scores out of?

Wait, the game doesn't even have a walking animation??
Likely due to the budget, there's just not many things to do in Akiba's Beat. There are no weapons, no poses or walking animations, no camera, no mini-games, no dialogue options or romance.

Dear lord in heavens.

Will buy on the extremely cheap in a few months just for the kii, I guess.

Oh well, at least they released Trails 3rd and Cold Steel I & II on PC so I can keep supporting quality from XSEED.

Maybe they can only run like in some old PS2 era games like SMT: Nocturne?

I mean Akiba's Trip was a low-budget mediocre game that was elevated a bit by just how ridiculous the premise was. By taking that out what's even the point.

I'm expecting a high 6 with a chance of low 7 if it's good.

I mean, Cyber Sleuth was in my top 5 last year, and it averages at 75 on Meta.

Eh, Cyber Sleuth wasn't getting 3's and 4's. I mean, I'm gonna play this game because I like Tales style gameplay and it's on Vita, but...i don't have high expectations.

I don't mean it's good. Just that people shouldn't expect a high score for this kind of niche game when at best you can hope for is a low 7.

The game seems devoid of identity from the reviews. Generic.

It's a budget title, just like every other Acquire game; Class of Heroes, Mind Zero, Aegis of Earth... Think it is as indie title... which is priced just like regular game.

I think I'll get it as soon as its price drops. I love bland JRPGS, I have played lots of them on DS. Mostly by Success.

So interesting when stuff like this launches. It's like watching a python digest a goat. Obviously noticeable from a distance and awkward for all involved.

This is such a shame. I don't get why they went in this direction in terms of the gameplay. The only good part about Akiba's Beat was the fun gameplay, not the terrible story or characters.

After the long delay and the near-complete resemblance to its predecessors, I had very low expectations from this title from the beginning.

This'll be on Steam for like sub $30 soon.

Well, Tales gameplay is generally fun, so in theory this game would have fun gameplay too. But it seems like it's just too genetic and low-budget for its own good.

One day this series will realise its potential and release a cult classic game set in Akihabara that we've all been wanting. But that day is most likely not today.

I don't think i'd trust the opinions of any of the sites in the OP about a game like Akiba.

Then trust me and stay the hell away from this game -_-

I'm writing my own review (in portuguese though) and I'm frankly disappointed with the game. And I liked Akiba's Trip.

YIKES. I was debating this, but considering I've put almost 100 hours into P5 & still haven't gotten the platinum, sounds like I'll just wait for this to be about $20 & there's just no other RPG coming out.

What a shame, Akiba's Trip was flawed, but still had charm & style that you could overlook the issues. A perfectly serviceable 3/5 or 7/10 game. This sounds like it didn't have the same effort put into it.

Oof.

Well, Conception II was pretty bland and I still enjoyed it, so this probably won' be too bad, for me at least.
Looking back, Conception 2 was fine, but I've come to realize it was a "filler" RPG, one you play because there was nothing else (both for my Vita & RPGs) & it happened to be cheap. A shame, because there was some decent ideas.....also some of the music is good & I hate I can't find all the battle themes on YouTube...
