Alan Wake PC recoups costs in 2 days

Am I the only one who disliked the game? Mediocre gameplay, terrible storytelling, clichéd characters, bloated... And certainly not scary or tense. It's the gaming equivalent of a bad Stephen King novel. Couldn't care less about the future of the franchise, to be honest.

I doubt it, but not many people who didn't like the game will pop into a thread talking it being a sales success.

I can't imagine porting costs were the reason it wasn't on PC until now. Recouping that (likely small) cost seems like an empty victory.

It's obvious that the reason it was 360 exclusive was because Microsoft wanted it as an exclusive to help their image and sales.

Yes, Remedy have implied as much:

It seems Microsoft still own publishing rights to the Alan Wake IP, as Remedy had to "nag" Microsoft to get the green light for the PC version. The IP showing up on the PC - now and apparently into the future - and Remedy being able to self-publish is more an olive branch than a direct result of expired contractual legalities.

i am not a pc gamer but i am very happy that the game finally came to pc and it seems to do well. if that means we will get more alan wake in the future, i am happy.

I would have bought it on PC if they released it 3 years ago. I'm glad this happened though, maybe they learned their lesson this time?

Good.

It'll still take a couple years before Steam's success story will filter upwards to the execs at the big publishers, they're still stuck in the past thinking that the PC market is on the decline. It'll take a while before they'll notice.

I am very happy to hear this. I loved Alan Wake on the 360 and am glad that the game not only has reached a new audience, but is successful, too!

Fair price, no crazy DRM, Steam release, apparently a guy from the company posting on NeoGAF, graphical options, and a bunch of command line options -- I'm happy about all of these, and I went with the $30 Steam version. I'm happy with that price, and didn't even try to bother with the $20 GMG one. :)

I bet they won't question doing a PC game again, huh.

I don't think Remdy really questioned that. MS just cockblocked the PC version in order to have an exclusive.

Dark Souls PC would be so damn good, and it has no equivalent competitors on PC so it would do well.

Yep. Namco should take notes.

DARK SOULS.

It's free money!

Do it.

Yeah would love to see Catherine, bayonetta, Vanquish, ninja gaiden and shadows of the damned.

From the top of my head.

These too.

Its just a port can not imagine it costed much to produce.

It's still a port job

Ports can easily get profitable.

Not a surprise really...

breaking even on porting costs is small apples. whether to have time exclusivity on a platform will always be an option.
So many experts ITT.

How many 360 to PC ports do you guys have under your belts? Zero? Combined or individually?

Today's peak on Steam was 2,656 players.

Is there any site that collect those daily peak numbers and formats them into charts [or just plain tables]?

There is plenty of evidence from the last year or two that concurrent numbers like this tend to represent around 5-10% of the total number of unique people that played on the given day. So that probably means around 25,000-30,000 unique players in a 24-hour period over the weekend, and many more total sales from that coming from people who chose not to play on a certain day.

2 days? Why the hell did it take so long for Remedy to give the PC port the go ahead then? I only paid $20 at launch through GMG so it is fantastic to know it didn't cost them an arm and a leg to produce a high quality port.

SO DON'T PULL THAT BULLSHIT AGAIN REMEDY, PC RELEASE IN A REASONABLE TIME SPAN. WHAT? YOU DON'T LIKE PROFIT?

How can all those people play it when they aren't on a comfy couch?! Madness!

I bought it on PC.
Loved teh QR code in Alan's office making fun of this comment.

This just confirms my belief that someone, somewhere on the net, has built solution for every question i ask. Quote and pic are from GITS.

Once again, I don't think it was Remedy's call.

Why the hell do people forget that Microsoft funded the project so it's not like Remedy could go "fuck you Microsoft, we don't want this to be an exclusive game for Xbox, we want this to be released on PC too!". It was Microsoft's call, not Remedy's.

Nope, totally agreed. I bought it because I love MP1+2 and wanted to support Remedy's return to the PC, and I don't regret doing so. But I don't really care for the game itself. It's full of potential but falls flat over and over. I am definitely confused by the gushing reviews I see people giving it.

That's not a "stop liking what I don't" because I am glad people like it, but it's far from what I would call a good game. It makes me pine for Max Payne instead.

If anything, I get the impression that Remedy felt pretty shitty about having to make it an Xbox exclusive, but Microsoft paid for the game, so they had no choice, really. If they hadn't been so adamant about wanting it on the PC, I doubt we'd have it now.

Shhhhhhh, don't spoil the fun. Sit back and watch the world burn.

What was the cost ?

We are missing a vital part of the equation in order to evaluate that statement

I dont see how it would be the same game at all played with keyboard/mouse, but played with pad would be nice indeed

That's awesome to see. Alan Wake is up there among my favourite 360 titles. It's an incredible game. I've already played it 3 times (and both DLCs a bunch of times) but last night my brother popped it in for the first time and I was surprised at how compelling it was to just watch him play it, heheh. I really love Alan Wake.

Probably pick this up this weekend. :) already beat it on 360 but never played the DLC. Looking forward to giving it another whirl.

Master race bros I shall be joining you shortly so help me Dawkins. Alan Wake will be my first purchase loved it on 360, but 540p is laughable and seeing DennisK's screenshots I must play it the way it was meant to be played.

See you on your side.

For as disappointed as I ended up being with the game when it came out in 09, which I had been anticipating since the very first PC trailer, I'm just hopeful that the success of this port and of American Nightware will give Remedy some breathing room for their next project.

Last year they also made over one million dollars with the Death Rally iOS remake.
