Alice Morgan: Best written female character ever?

Now I'm really confused.
Laura Palmer isn't in the show? The only time I ever remember seeing Laura in the show is in that video of her dancing with Lara Flynn Boyle, and that only lasts for about ten seconds. What the?

Yeah, what the fuck is he talking about?

I would agree on Tami, apart her unlikely career path, she and coach were the perfect TV couple and parents.

In general I just really like Claire Danes, from Stardust to Temple Grandin.

I find her quite deliciously flawed and hate-able, but in a believable way. I only other more irritable female character on TV now would be Cersei on GoT for me.

Whoa, I totally forgot that the spoilered part happened. I still don't hate her though.

I'm referring to the movie Fire Walk With Me.

The Wire is the best television show ever. Let's get that straight!

And Dev, it's funny that you mention Kima just because David Simon felt like a weakness of his writing is writing female characters.
Finally, something we don't have in common

The Wire is a great show (and relating to the topic, I found the writing for D'Angelo's mother's struggle between protecting her son and protecting her business really strong), but it ranks behind MSCL and Mad Men for me. But then again, I find The Wire S3 to be the best overall whereas most seem to gravitate to S4, so what do I know?

Peggy from Mad Men
I haven't seen Luther, but god damn I fucking love Peggy. Favorite character on the show, although I can see why people would choose others.

Still don't understand how we're supposed to hate her. I think the show portrays her in a pretty positive light for the most part.

Alice Morgan is a great character, and definitely wasn’t around enough in Season 2, but she’s not the best written female character. She’s not actually the best written female Morgan – that honour goes to Debra Morgan, Dexter’s foul-mouthed, messed-up, hyper-wired sister.

My favourite recent female TV character is Constance Langdon from American Horror Story.

However, I canÂ’t decide whether thatÂ’s because the part was well written, or if it was the magnificence of Jessica LangeÂ’s performance that got to me. Bit of both probably.
And sheÂ’s coming back for Season 2!

Er, no? WTF.
What exactly is the criteria for the OP's idea of "best written female character" out of curiosity? Do they go against stereotypes? Represent women in a realistic fashion? Reflect strength and resilience?
Alice is just such a bizarre choice when you insist on singling her out as exceptionally well written for her gender.

CCH Pounder in The Shield.

Enormous on screen presence.

Tami Taylor, y'all.

Much better choices.

Was waiting for this.

Alice is silly but all of Luther is silly, Luther is a silly show.

Such a silly show. It pretends it's not utterly ridiculous, but it is.

RAHHHHHH I'M IDRIS ELBA I'M KICKING IN A DOOR RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I'm gonna take this trash talk to the next level. Everything awesome about Luther was stolen from Cracker, except Idris Elba.

Talking of Cracker and well-written female characters brings to mind Panhandle.

Luther may be ridiculous, but it's brilliantly ridiculous. Unlike, say, Wire In The Blood or Waking The Dead, or The Body Farm, all of which are just plain stupid.

Juliet Burke from LOST or Alice from Homeland.
Agent Scully get at least an honorable mention.

Nice try, but IMO...not at all. She was pretty weak overall and wasnt written that well for most of the series.

Best performance of the decade? Maybe not quite, but it's certainly up there.

Not sure if serious here. Kim Bauer? IMO she has to be the WORST written character in the entire history of poorly written TV characters. Cant act either. Sure shes super fine, but thats it. Her character was one of the few low points of 24.

I was actually going to mention Debra Morgan in this thread, but only as an incredibly unfunny joke.

She can act pretty nicely. I finished season four about 20 minutes ago, and while it was my second favorite season so far, I missed her.

Brilliantly acted, not very well written.

God damn it, you are what is wrong with GAF. Names and shows.

You are not what is wrong with GAF, but it is annoying. Have a hug.

Sorry, I just assumed people know who they are.

Carrie from Homeland

Megs Bennett from Justified

Betty from Mad Men

i honestly don't get what was so great about Tami Taylor?

was it just that she had good tits?

She was an incredibly well written representation of a modern woman and modern feminist ideals. Caring, forthright, honest, hilarious. I would say she's one of the best characters on tv period. Fuck gender.

This post needs more love.

Yes it does:

Also, LaDonna from Treme, hell most of the women on Treme are awesome.

<3 Correct.

really? All i remember of her was that she sat around for 5 seasons with an expression on her face like she just missed the bus.

I think Tami and Eric together give us a kind of marriage that we don't see on TV very often. Though not infallible, she's was a good mother, wife, friend and counsellor/principal and none of it feels forced (apart from her career perhaps), and it doesn't feel like she's there to push a point about gender. I don't think she would be anywhere near as good without Coach though, just like Julie becomes a lot more annoying without Matt, it's their interactions that make it.

Need to add Erin Hannon from the US Office
images

Everything about her is gold. In fact as weak as The Office has been lately, it should just be re-titled "Erin the Secretary"

Alice?

Lol, my bad. I meant Carrie from Homeland, fraking thread title must have been messing with my head.

Dude, Kim Bauer was a JOKE. Her only purpose was to be small mini plot to whatever the big deal was on each season. I would see the stupid bullshit her character would do and just curse the writing staff. I mean really, those writers were getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to add in a bunch of filler for her character. So stupid, such a waste of time. You could tell as early as season 2 that they had already run out of ideas for her, and since you've seen up to season 4....how did she all the sudden become qualified to be a CTU analyst or whatever her role was? How did she go from ignorant blonde to Government Agent? Poor writing, thats how.
