C.J. Cregg from The West Wing. Smart, funny, successful and played by a great actress.

She's so amazing in Drop Dead Gorgeous.

They successfully made someone truly psychotic yet fearsome and commanding simultaneously. I thought it was fantastically done.

In television

So I've been watching Luther again because...well, why not and I just can't get over how well written Alice is. There really aren't any other female characters quite like her in any other show. Her relationship with Luther, their "friendship", the subtle attraction, it's quite unique. Anyone else agree?

For those who don't know and need some back story...well the quick rundown is
Luther is a cop and Alice is a woman who killed her family just to see if she could get away with it. Luther somehow figures out she did it but with no evidence to show. After this she becomes fascinated with him and his life, and despite his fear of her and unwillingness to accept her "help", they develop something of a friendship

Not even close to the best written female character of the last couple years, let alone forever.

Also, Luther isn't well written at all.

I sat through Veronica Mars, solely because of how much I loved the main character. Maybe not the best, but a really fun take.

I also think buffy doesn't get enough love. I think SMG was better than many suggest, and somewhere between growing distant from her high school companions and realizing she has weird sexual proclivities, she "grew up" more than any character I've ever seen. Season 7 Buffy feels like a clear (albeit sad) and logical conclusion to the girl we met in season 1.

I agree with the OP. Alice is complicated. I really think that is why Luther let her be.

The best part of their "relationship" is during the 2nd season when Luther's ward asks "Who do you know who could take down a person like that?" Luther says "Her name is Alice."
Perfect.

Just finished season 2 and that part was great. Really enjoyed Luther. Looking forward to season 3.

Love Alice in Luther.
I also (though am probably the only one) vote for Peta Wilson's Nikita in La Femme Nikita (not that complete shit airing now)

Wat @ the the OP's suggestion.

Here are some that qualify for myself:

Still don't understand how we're supposed to hate her. I think the show portrays her in a pretty positive light for the most part.
I only got through the first season but
she fucks a married man and just ditches her baby. Pretty good reasons not to like her.

If you're talking purely about the WRITING of a female character then:

Irrespective of what you think about how the mystery of her character was "resolved". I hope we can agree that Moffat's writing is at its smartest, and funniest when he's writing River Song. The heartbreaking exchange between river and the doctor at the end of "day of the moon" was one of the most earned (and importantly, one of the least forced) emotive scenes I've seen on television.

But if we're just talking about our favourite female characters in television (so acting also plays a part) I'd go for Annie in Being Human (from series 1 and 2 I'll stress; pre-flanderisation)

.

A couple more:

Sarah Lund - The Killing

Kelly - Misfits

Sugar - The Crimson Petal and the White (The TV adaptation of the novel is SOOO GOOOD. Make sure you watch it if you ever get the chance)

Amelia - The Silence (was so refreshing to see a deaf character on television that wasn't just a moping mess)

RE: Luther. Idris Elba is amazing in it (but he is in everything). But the rest of the show; writing, characterisation etc doesn't live up to his performance.

Agreed.

I would say same for Jane Lynch's character but the ruined her with that series finale episode.

You didnt think the writing for her character was the weakest of all in the final season? I mean, I thought this was about well written Female characters and they really dropped the ball with Starbuck. IMO

Wish I would have thought of this earlier, I take back all my previous choices...

Liz Lemon is probably the best written character on TV, male or Female.

I should clarify that my decisions are based on the best majority of said characters - which might contradict the idea of 'best written' but w/e. So while I also have issues with Starbuck in season 4, the character for most of the series was written with some incredible depth and portrayed brilliantly.

Also, +1 for Liz.
