'ALIEN' monster design stolen . . . how many times??

I always thought that the second Contra guy was Billy from Predator.

David Lynch's Dune is great, but for Kyle MacLachlan. I suppose Sting's awesomeness makes up for that however.

I prefer Cameron's Alien to Giger's original. Blasphemy, I know, it's just that Cameron's version looks so familiar and even disarming, while Giger's are visually repulsive (in a good way).

Pardon my shitty english, its not my main language :[

What i meant was that he downplayed the "rape scene" that preceded her death so the Censorship Board wouldnt mess with the movie.

Don't worry about the English, and thanks for the info. I haven't seen Alien in a year or so... were there indications that Kane was attracted to that character?

Cameron's was more nimble and almost arachnid-like. Really freaky- especially with the awesome lighting. Although the first time you see the mature-formed Alien in the original (poor Harry Dean) remains one of the most terrifying moments in any film for me.

I also love Jerry Goldsmith's music in Alien. Very bleak and unnerving.

I think it was the second time I saw the movie when I noticed it was in the background the whole time. The first time I saw it, the part where Dallas meets his end made me jump pretty good. It was only a couple years ago, too.

Same for both. I love the way Cameron leaves it to the viewer to try and piece together what happens to the other final crew member, and how the Alien is really moving around a ship that size so freely.

I cant get a pic at the moment but there are literally alien rip-offs running around deep in the Mines of Moria expansion of Lord of the Rings Online.
Overseers I think they are called.

Maybe not the most blatent alien ripoff but surely the weirdest one I've come across.

The concept is that the Alien assimilates some of its hosts memories, personality and physical traits.

Remember when the Alien slowly wraps its tail around the chick that screamed alot in Alien79?
Supposedly, that was the only way Ridley found to emply that she was gonna be rapped before being killed without the board jumping on his back.
The idea was that the crew member that gave birth to the Alien was sexually attracted to her, and that carried over.
I'm an Alien fanatic and I didn't know that, I wish it was a little more obvious...I mean it wasn't like there was any sexual tension between Kane and Lambert in the movie. Knowing the beast takes some likeness from the host was terrifying enough, but to imply it was atrracted to a human is messed up. I like it and it make perfect sense given the disturbingly dark, yet sexualy aesthetic design. Suddenly the species takes on a whole new level of evil...

Anywho, I noticed waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day aliens could be found in Breath of Fire 2. When you go down the well to save the townsfolk, they've got face-huggers attached ot them. That's my two cents, and I'm spent.

I'm kinda torn because I like that aspect but it also screwed up my favorite part of the original Alien, the way it moved. When actually shown moving around it always did so in this bizarre slow moving yet somewhat humanoid fashion. It was really strange and made the alien appear more...alien.

Unfortunatly, like alot of stuff in Blade Runner, you only pick up these things if you watch making-of's, director commentaries and whatnot. (I think Ridley said it...or Cartwright somewhere on the 25th Anniversary Quadrology Extras)

I dont think its blatantly emplied in the movie, but i havent seen it in a while too.

The Alien rape though, that one is a bit more obvious in the movie (tail crawling between her legs - her "wierd" screams - shot of her bloody and now naked feet in mid-air). That and again, the actress and director confirm this.

Playing "Spot the Xenomorph" is always fun

but he even knocks up Dallas! somehow :O

Yea, dude said english wasn't his first language. If you couldn't get that from the context then I'm wondering if it's not your first language either.

I didn't get to that post yet smartass. And, no, the first time he used "rapped" it had no contextual clues.

That said, no big deal about the spelling. I'm sure he speaks english far better than I speak his native language.

I LOVE this shot in Aliens.

damn... that reminds me how much I really prefer well directed (and lighted) scenes with tangible special effects/guys in suits over most CG stuff. That scene, as well as the scene when Corp. Hicks sees all the Aliens moving above the ceiling mesh near the end, are great examples of this.

...I apologize for the (slight?) derailing. :D

This thread is amazing.

Some shop in a mall nearby has an H.R. Giger calender that I will now buy.

Yeah, I ordered a Giger book and the quadrilogy because of this thread :lol

My damned brother lost my movies last year, been missing them.

good puppets and suits>>>> bad CG

Aliens, predator, ninja turtles, even Jurassic park 1 have all aged better than say Jurassic park 3.

Even the CG boat scenes in titanic look like shit now.

Well except for that one part where you see a crew member grab the raptor's tail

I'm not sure if this counts, but the original Xbox logo (that green X) always looked like an Alien egg opening up to me. I think some versions of the logo even played some sort of gooey splitting-open-type sound effect.

And didn't some of the early Alien ads feature an egg that was cracked, letting light pour out? Yeah, like this. Anyway, the Xbox logo always seemed like a combination of that, and the four "petals" on the top of the egg opening up.

Maybe it's just me.

While I'm not questioning that Halo is one of the most direct Alien/s rippoffs I've ever played, both the first and second Halo images are not from Halo 1. First is from Halo 3, and I think the second is from Halo 2(?). Nitpicking, woo.

The first part of the third level from Halo 1 has some quotes taken directly from Aliens, too -- "They're not paying us by the hour".

Can't find a good pic of an Elite without its armour, but I always thought they looked like a mix of both the Alien and Predator. Seem to have the same sort of head shape and grey skin as the Alien mixed with the jaws of a Predator.

"It's gonna be dark soon, and they mostly hunt at night. Mostly"

:D

But yeah suits and practical effects everyday. Amazing lighting also helps :P

I remember Chris Remo talking about seeing Aliens for the first time and him saying how now he knew where video games came from.

Jurassic Park 3 was a combination of ILM CG and Stan Winston animatronics just like the first movie.
There are only a few shots of the CG Titanic, and the ship is far away from camera in the only ones that are above water.
In the vast majority of shots, the Titanic is either an almost-full-scale set or a 45' (1/20th scale) model. Some larger-scale models were used during parts of the sinking.
Basically, you're blind. Don't worry... most of GAF is, too.

that thing about the scream/rape suggestion in Alien is fascinating.

also, awesome topic. reminds me how awesome Aliens is. (as if i needed it ;) that newt shot is killer!
