This is apparently not satire.

Corey Griffin, a philanthropist who was instrumental in making the ALS ice bucket challenge fund-raising drive go viral, has died after drowning in a diving accident off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The 27-year-old's life was cut tragically short on Saturday (16 August) when he dove off a wharf that serves as a popular diving perch for locals, resurfacing once before disappearing back under the water and drowning.
...

Griffin reportedly raised $100,000 at a fundraiser just hours before his death, with the ice bucket challenge having been one of the biggest talking points online in the past few days.
Tragic.

Joke aside, that's tragic news obviously. May he rest in peace.

What, I don't get it. How does one simply go under and just drown? Especially in if you can swim (which I assume he could since he went diving).
I need more details.

He apparently jumped or fell off a building at 2AM into the harbor. I'll look for the article I read a few days ago.

Here it is:

On the night of August 15, after making a call to his father from Nantucket Island Griffin drowned after diving from the roof of the Juice Guys building into Nantucket Harbor. Griffin was in town to do more fundraising for ALS research.

At 2 a.m. in the morning on Saturday, Griffin dived off a building at Straight Wharf into the water and soon drowned. According to the police report, after jumping, Griffin "floated to the surface" but his body "then went under water again not resurfacing."

I've been there many times... The water around there is very shallow during low tide. And there can be a lot of big heavy debris in the water too that would be very hard to see at 2AM.

Kind of like how the owner of Segway died riding his Segway off a cliff. Very unfortunate.

Well one is an accident, the other is apparently the outcome of a dare. Which is why those are stupid to begin with.
Condolences to the family, still.
