Amazon Lord of the Rings show to have nudity and sex

I've been saying something similar to my friends. Christopher Tolkien vacated his seat on the board of the Tolkien Estate shortly before they announced the agreement with Amazon. Forced out?

There also been a rumor for a while that they parted ways with the Tolkien scholar they brought in for the project.

Bezos said he wanted his own Game of Thrones. It seems like he thinks LOTR is the vehicle to get there so I am expecting a lot of what characterized early GOT-excessive sex and violence often there simply for the shock value and IMO the biggest weakness of the first several seasons.

Tolkien loved fairy tales, myth, and language-that's how he created Middle Earth. Not with sex and violence intended to shock an audience. Amazon would be wise to treat it as such. There is nothing wrong with a fairy tale.

I really like C.S. Lewis' quote on fairy tales:

When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I'm all in. I'm also super curious what qualifications you need to have to be an "intimacy coordinator". Like be a spinster nun? Some sort of ace androgynous person? I'm sure it is mostly non gender conforming pansexuals but really, shouldn't it be someone with a deep understanding of the male gaze to maximize the erotic potential and minimize wang flapping?

In games they introduced black man from south and asians from far east of ME, it somewhat makes sense to do it like that but they will probably just use people of every race everywhere like in The Witcher.

That's my fear, and my expectation. They're most likely not gonna bother rooting it in believability. Even a place like the shire, filled with people weary of both strangers and the outside, will probably multicultural. White parents will have dark skinned kids and vice versa, cause skin color doesn't exist anymore.

Oh I'm probably overreacting, but probably not. It's what's becoming the norm.

I don't think anyone alive today possesses the unique combination of education and skills necessary to elaborate on Middle Earth.

Tolkien wasn't just a fantasy writer with a good imagination, like say J.K. Rowlings. He was a medieval scholar and a philologist and more, and all of it informed the fantasy.

Handing his world over to television executives is like hiring a (possibly very talented) comic book artist to further flesh out the Sistine Chapel.

(I exaggerate, but only some)
I'm setting my expectations a lot lower than a comparison to Tolkien. I enjoyed both Shadow of Mordor games, despite them basically using the LOTR IP to just make a bloody executions-focused Batman game. It felt like a tonal shift compared to the movies, but I still liked it, and it was clearly just an excuse to do cool execution moves - but they threw in some additional stuff with Kelebrimbor that was neat. I might enjoy this show too. As long as it's good, I'll give it a chance.

Some people get to be so entrenched in appreciation for something that they end up hating anything new associated with it. I've seen it happen to Final Fantasy and Metroid fans, that don't enjoy anything in the series for literally 20 years while still considering themselves the gatekeepers. Sometimes it's best to just see if it's entertaining and judge it on its own merits, rather than comparing it to incomparable standards.

Did any of us need to see a close-up of that one dude's dick as he was inspecting it for warts in Game of Thrones?

NO!

Fuck the nudity quota. And fuck the equal nudity quota. Take it away and focus on the story. I'm not sure I know of any movie with a good plot that was made better because it had tits or dick in it.

I'm not trying to "censor" people. Creators can do what they want with their art, but in my humble opinion, it only makes things better if your story is utter trash to begin with.

LotR is literature, not a franchise.

And anyway I loved Samus Returns.

How can someone be so tone deaf?

I bet they are literally trying to ride on the Game Of Thrones success and what they think the best points of that show were.

I think Game of Thrones got more casual viewers interested in a fantasy show because of the interpersonal character moments that everyone can relate to. They're not making this for kids, but to be the flagship prestige show for reviewers, and adults. Even though it didn't have nudity, Battlestar Galactica and Farscape basically succeeded for the same reason, and brought in casual viewers interested in the characters instead of being only about robots and aliens in space. If it's done well, it shouldn't be a problem, and it humanizes a show that's likely going to have lots of dense mythology and fantasy that turns off most people.

I'm still totally willing to give it a chance. This is still easily the best chance LOTR will ever have - on paper - to be expanded in a cool way. No one is likely to match the original Peter Jackson movies. If you want to expand the series the best chance is TV now, with much more time to build more elaborate mythology and stories. And it's already the most expensive show ever made. If this doesn't work, then likely nothing will for live action LOTR ever again.

This idea that everything needs to be "extended" or "expanded" is absolute cancer. Note that this attitude isn't about making great art, it's about making a lot of money by whoring out the name. LOTR is one of the great achievements of English literature, and it is being handled by shit tier hacks who want to flash some titty to get attention on social media.

We don't need more LOTR, we don't need live action LOTR, we don't need a LOTR cinematic universe. We have brilliant books and a trilogy of movies far better than they had any right to be. That's enough.

To be fair, there is great stuff that Tolkien wrote that IS worth adapting. For example, this seems to be a retelling Akallabeth, the Downfall of Numenor. But it doesn't need sex for that.

People are assuming sexualized content because they're casting for extras comfortable with nudity? One doesn't have to necessarily mean the other.

We'll have to wait and see I suppose.

Instead of going down this route, they could have just hired attractive cast members like Arwen in LOTR. But no it seems the only way to make their ugly actors/actresses interesting is to have them having sex all the time.

I seriously doubt that Tolkien Estate would allow gratuitous sex scenes with their propriety.

If there’s really going to have sex scenes, then it’ll probably be built to give viewers disgust more than anything.

C'mon man.

Seriously, this Game of Thrones trend lately of adult D&D is already wearing thin for me.

Watch as the next Elder Scrolls is going full R with Khajit pornhub and lost Dwemer dick contraptions.

Completely misplaced in the world.
There is a lot of sex and nudity in the source material for game of thrones and that still felt forced on tv. In Lord of the Rings it is going to be completely wrong.

Tolkien could go to dark places - such as incest relationships and suicide - but never wrote nude sex scenes. He wasn't Gerorge Martin, who is a writer that has no filter (writing a scene for example were a woman is comparing the taste of cum with the sea). This doesn't need to be like GoT with random sex scenes to make it a success.

What makes Tolkien's work stand out is that is is based on Saxon/Norse mythology. There's no need to fill it with nude scenes and mass, hardcore orgies with elves doing humans etc.

Debated two jokes (never go full r or r kelly) before giving up. I've failed you all.

The need for an intimacy councilor or whatever would suggest that there are going to be sex scenes. I suppose it could be for nonconsensual sex or just someone to make sure background naked actors in a scene of humans being dragged off to slavery or using a public bath or whatever aren't being left topless between scenes for the enjoyment of the best boy and key grip but seems likely that there will be hook ups on the show.

I'm fine with this, LOTR doesn't skew so young that a little bit of tasteful sex in between all the stabbings, beheadings, and face bashing would stand out.

If it is full on Spartacus level sex and nudity though, well, that would be something!
