Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Device

Is it? I'm not sure how that prevents an instant video app on the play store.

it prevents Amazon (or anyone else) from having an 'Android App Store' App on the Play Store. the previous version made it seem ok since their app sold lots of stuff and also hey by the way, Android apps.

The biggest change I see is removing 'primary'.

We're talking about the removal of the Amazon app which contained among a number of features, access to amazon's appstore. So yeah, changing the terms to change 'primary purpose' to any purpose is significant

I'm not suggesting this change would prevent a standalone video store. They probably aren't doing that due to other terms, but the question was about the removal of their existing app and whether it was initiated by Google

Hilarious. When I worked at this dumpster fire of a company the Chrome things sold like hotcakes, with AppleTVs being a pretty consistent seller as well. The only time you ever saw these garbage FireTV things sell was when they had a sale on them.

I guess they figure if people go on the site and don't see Chomecast/AppleTV they'll just buy the shitty Amazon brand knockoff. I don't think that'll work out too well.

This will make everyone buy firetv for sure.

That's not really the point, Amazon brings the value of a massive physical distribution chain, chromecast and Apple TV bring a digital distribution chain. Amazon wants a better deal when it comes to transactions on those digital distribution systems.

So essentially Amazon is Activision asking MS to raise the price of Xbox Live so they can get a cut that they don't deserve.

This company lol

1) Open Amazon Appstore.
2) Search Prime Video.
3) Install.

Lots of hoops there.

Not sure if you don't know what you are talking about or being intentionally obtuse.

How do i install Amazon app store?

Go to amazon, find and download the apk for their appstore
Get it on my phone.
Go into my security settings to enable 3rd party applications.
Install the apk
Open the app store
search prime video
install

This allows you to use a shitty service. Thats a lot of hoops for not a lot of payoff and something i would say 95% of phone users won't do

i hear that many Verizon phones come with the Amazon app preloaded. cuts down massively on that list of steps for most Americans.

If so, then there you go. You still need to enable 3rd party apps to be installed unless Verizon allows that by default as well... but that would be pretty ballsy by Verizon to open up such a gigantic security hole in every one of their customer phones.

well, i haven't used one in person to say that it does this for sure, but pre-installed apps can have special privileges that allow them to bypass the unknown sources check.

if i install the app store myself, when i want to download another game/app i have to make sure the security setting is enabled. I did this recently with Instant Video, so i know :) i had to re-enable 3rd party apps after i disabled it when i was done installing the app store thinking that the rest would bypass it... i was wrong.

I use Prime Video on my games consoles and it's a horrible experience. I get Prime for free and would never pay for it (let alone buy their hardware) given how bad their streaming Video and Music services are. Getting Prime Video onto my phone was an obnoxious process and it's all part of this prima donna attitude that Amazon seem to have that is less than endearing.

if you install the Amazon Appstore yourself, then it wasn't pre-installed like it is on some Verizon devices.

Whelp I guess that tells us how well the fire stick is going. Must be shit for them to get so salty about Apple TV and Chromecast sales that they delist them.

Cry more.

Amazon could easily get slapped with an antitrust suit over this. Honestly, since their devices suck, and this is a shitty thing to do, I'm kinda rooting for it.

Amazon has good lobbyists in D.C. and has had them for a lot longer than Apple. I.e., see the collusion government lawsuit against Apple and the book publishers.

Yes, but Apple and Google are not exactly small companies. If they cared enough, they could very easily go after Amazon for anti-competitive/anti-trust behavior on this. It's pretty clear cut misuse of their market domination in online retail to harm competitors.

Roku not having their own streaming/VOD service is why I see Amazon allowing them to stay.

They aren't eliminating the Shield TV or Razor Forge either. Really looking like a move to pressure development policy changes from Apple/Google.

The way I see it, this is amazon's way to counter appstore's policy about profit sharing on every in app purchase.

for not selling a product? well, maybe in Euro...no wait. Europe probably loves that they're not selling a Google product.

Amazon being anticompetitive? Does this mean the DOJ is going to investigate Apple again?

depends on how many companies Apple colludes with to raise prices for consumers.

Why? This does more harm than good.
Don't you dare remove the ability of using prime on my iOS devices! :0
Maybe they lock the ability of using an iOS device to stream to the Apple TV. D:

I care about it in that I pay for Prime and I want to have access to what I pay for in a convenient way

Amazon has literally no one to blame but themselves. They've had years to make an AppleTV/Chromecast app and they haven't

They force you to pay for video, though. In fact, after adding a bunch of non-optional, unrelated to shopping, features to Prime, they even raised the price.

I would never buy an Apple product on Amazon anyway. Their listing for Apple products is pretty scetchy and I can usually get it somewhere better.

I'm glad I have a PS4 for Amazon video streaming if I ever get prime, but it's disappointing that they hold back support for their streaming platform and play high and mighty like this. Should I trust them to maintain support on the PS4? And just limit it to their devices?

But Amazon prime video is a viable and competitive service on its own merits.... -_-
