American Truck Simulator |OT| Freedom gives me a Semi with a Heavy Load

Screw San Francisco; that is all.

P.S. Sequential gearbox on a controller is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I don't know if it's a truck thing or what, but downshifting to help with hills and speed boosts doesn't seem to work like I expected...

does your truck have an engine retarder?

I'm loving this game so far. The concept almost seems silly on paper, but it really hooked me when I started playing.

If I have one complaint it's that all of the AI cars have headlights lit up at night, but they don't actually project a forward light source. Maybe my graphic settings are messed up. It's not a huge deal but still noticeable.

Meanwhile, in actual San Francisco:

San Francisco does not care about Bud Light. Not even during the Super Bowl.

So uh, how could I get out of this mess?

Losing 10k a day on loans, only have a garage and 1 truck with one worker. No truck for myself.

I do have 180k but that will be gone if I don't plan out.

EDIT: LMAO, this moment is reminding me of this tweet:

If you already have the cash for it, buy yourself a truck. The contracts pay a lot more than quick jobs. Alternatively, fire that lazy worker, and use the truck yourself since you will be a lot more efficient.

I really hope they get all the states done like they want to. I really doubt they will, but I hope they do because I'd buy them all. And also, my state's on the East coast and it seems they're smartly going from state to state that they can link into the transports as you go.

edit: and do the default weather settings seem low to anyone else?

I can't find a direct quote, but I think it was Squirrel who talked about how you could set the rain probability on a region-basis in the map editor in a live stream. He might have been talking out of his ass though, because he sometimes does, but it seems probable when you compare the effect of the rain slider in ATS vs ETS.

Edit: I found a thread on the promods forums where one of the mod authors say that they can set climate/weather values for every section of the map and this feature was part of the 1.20 update that improved day/night cycle.

How the almighty fuck is this the biggest selling game on Steam right now?

People love their comfort games.

I'm basically waiting to see where this goes in regards to state/support. I still have ETS2 to get through. I never even bought a lorry in that. :x I just did quick jobs and never took a loan.

So people who've been with the series for awhile, is the first Euro Truck Simulator worth picking up? I like the appeal of a nice cruising game but that first game is much more compatible with my non-gaming laptop than the sequels.

Just picked this up and did the tutorial. I have it set to always do the skilled parking and I don't know if the tutorial job changed its location based on that setting, but it was already tougher than anything I ever encountered in stock ETS2. If it was a real truck I would've had a dented fender.

http://atsmods.lt/realistic-police-mod/

gonna finally grab the game later today

Another nice feature not mentioned in the mod description is a certain grace-period on the speed limits. In the US, most highway patrol look the other way when going 5 mph over the speed limit, even when passing through radar traps. At 10 and over, you're cruising at your own risk.

After installing the mod I just set my cruise control to 59-60 mph, as I typically do in real life, and had police cars just rolling right on by me in in the next lane over. No fuss, no muss.

.............

In other news, I continue to be impressed with the game. I wasn't sure if I'd suffer from a Been There, Done That syndrome as the trappings & mechanics are so similar to ETS2, right down to the menus and such. But man I'm just in 7th heaven with ATS.

It just captures the West Coast feel with shocking fidelity. From the coastal highways of the south to the wide-open agriculture plains of the Central Valley & north. It's condensed for sure, which is a bit of a shocker on a subconscious level, but what's there is golden.

If this is any indication of what to expect as new states roll out in future DLC, then I might as well just link my bank account with SCS for auto-deductions the moment new stuff goes up for sale. I think it's going to be incredible when they eventually make big progress into the US map.

Don't really know, but I think it lacks most of the QoL improvements that make ETS2 and ATS so good

It seems to be. I had the same feeling when the Scandinavia DLC came out for ETS2, which held a similar detail level. I've driven most of the roads it covered, and it was spot on for capturing the feel of it. They didn't quite get the distinct features of the mountain crossings in Norway, but the landscape type before and after matched up pretty well. In either case, it seems like this is the level of detail all their content is going to have from now on.

I just fear how much time it is going to take them to churn it out.

Thing is, trucks are typically held to a higher standard when it comes to the rules of the road. Yeah, the game doesn't need to be that realistic, but I'm just grateful there aren't random as hell DOT inspections that result in super big fines.

That police mod seems interesting. I might make my own version that keeps the high fines (and might even increase them somewhat), but lowers the probability of getting caught by a police vehicle and increases the grace time so you can't get insta-tickets from changing speeds. Basically make it tough but fair.

Hell, I think I'll make an overall "Dark Souls" mod pack that makes jobs pay less, accidents cause more damage, insurance cost more, jobs have lower time limit and similar difficulty increases. I always liked to play ETS2 with mods that penalize you heavily for avoidable mistakes.

I understand wanting fines to be smaller, but the game is a scaled down version of the real world. Any traffic violation is simulating as if you had broken that law multiple times over the course of the journey. I don't think they should match up 1:1 with real world fines.

Yeah, SCS has greatly improved their map making skills since ETS2 came out, comparing the defualt ETS2 regions to the Going East and Scandinavia areas is eye popping, and ATS seems to up the notch even further yet.

As for timeframes to new areas, we'll be getting Arizona within a month it sounds like, and New Mexico + Texas a few months later (they seem to be very far along already), but after that I'd expect a new expansion (containing a state or two) at best twice a year. This level of detail does take time. Keep in mind it sounds like they are still going to support ETS2 as well with new regions and map improvements. Of course if they move some of the ETS2 map team onto ATS then that would speed things up a bit, which they have said is a possibility since ETS2 is already fairly mature in content.

I'd say we are looking at years until we are driving coast to coast and from California to Alaska through Canada. But honestly I'm okay with that, I mean I've got over 150 hours played in ETS2 and there are still roads I've not driven on in the game (my map is something like 78% explored). If history is any teacher then we know that once SCS starts expanding their map world it grows huge pretty quickly. And that isn't even touching on the fantastic map mods that are no doubt already in development by the modding community...

Right now I'm more interested in getting more trucks in game, and more accessories for those trucks. I feel that's a bigger priority for me.

Yeah, I need this mod. I don't even care about the high fines, I'm just tired of getting ticketed for going 35 in a 30.

I'm glad to hear that it captures the WC well...I've been to Anaheim once or twice, but I've never really explored the west coast (I live just outside of DC). I'm not holding my breath on getting expansions to come out my way if they're planning to go up the coast into Canada, but I tell you what if they make DC/MD/VA expansions I am in day one.

Indeed. I've got my expectations firmly in check as SCS moves at a glacial pace with production. On the flip-side however, I've rarely seen a dev so committed to post-launch game support.

ETS2 is what, 4 years old now? It's still seeing regular updates not only in the form of paid DLC, but also engine tweaks and enhancements that cost the consumer nothing.

SCS has my full confidence both as a developer and their commitment to the future of ATS.

Too funny. I'm from DC metro as well (NoVA).

I've just got family all over CA (both my side and my wife's), so we're vacationing out there at least a couple times a year. Carlsbad, SD, SF, Auburn, Sac, etc.

As an East Coast kid who grew up in Boston and spent my adult life in DC, I didn't really discover CA until later in life. Now that I've digested the environment for years I totally plan on retiring out there eventually.

Ooh, DOT Hassle Simulator! I like that idea.

"Oh, looks like you have a taillight out. You're not driving this truck anywhere until that's fixed."

SCS has my full confidence both as a developer and their commitment to the future of ATS.

Yeah, SCS deserves every penny I give them. The amount of support their games get is fantastic. When I watched Squirrel stream the interview with the SCS CEO on Twitch on Sunday, I could just tell how commited to the player-base they were. Even when they make mistakes, they try to be transparent about them and take care of whatever needs done to fix it.

Got it this morning. Don't have my own truck yet, but I've been around. Started in San Diego, been to LA, El Centro, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and Oxnard. I also notice one of the Arizona towns is Ehrenberg, just east of the California border, as well as Speed Limit 65 signs on I-5, even though it's still 55. I'm also using the Realistic Police mod. Next is San Francisco.

Also, World of Trucks is slow today. Must be straining under ATS.

What the hell is going on with these Nevada freeways?

I'll be out in the middle of the desert with a speed limit of 80, then out of no where it switches to 45 and I immediatley get a ticket then it switches back to 80. Then it fluctuates between 80, 70 and 65x

I wasn't going through a town, I was in the middle of no where.

They need to give you some grace time with these abrupt changes.

Man this game is basically unplayable with the steam controller. Has anyone found a good setup?

I played for 3 hours with Mode Shift All the Things, a community config, but I had to do some tweaks.

First, make sure the game is set on Keyboard + Controller, set steering to Gamepad Joystick, and make sure to set the Acceleration Axis to the Triggers (Z axis). You can also adjust the joystick/wheel sensitivity here later. Then, I adjusted the Stick Response curve to Aggressive, made the Dead Zone Inner a bit larger, and got rid of the Parking Brake in Steam Controller Config.

I got the hang of it with this setup... Your mileage may vary! (pun intended)

Does that tune the sensitivity down? The steering was insanely touchy.

One thing that actually bothers me a lot in this game compared to ETS2 is how the time scale forces you to rest a lot more often, but the game world does not actually have any higher density of rest stops. You pretty much need to plan stops at least 5 hours in advance where ETS2 you can drive to around 2 hours until sleep and usually make it.

Yes, but you must do all the controller setup first, then the final tuning happens in game in the Joystick Sensitivity section of the controller setup.

The dead zone increase gives you a bit of leeway when you are just trying to hold the steering wheel straight.

The increase of the Stick Response Curve to Aggressive lets you make small fine tuned corrections with the wheel while also allowing you to make a 90 degree turn when needed.

Just had to deliver some wire to the side of the road in Huron. However, the game had me coming from the opposite way the trailer should've been parked, so I had to essentially go wide across the road and turn as tight as I could to line the trailer up properly. Hit some cones with my truck while straightening up the trailer, but I got it in. I guess in real life, I'd have kept going up the road and found a parking lot to turn around in, but ain't no one got time for that!

Can somebody translate this to American English, please? Does this just mean the graphics are bad but the gameplay is good?

More like first impression would turn away a lot of people..When I told people I played Euro Truck simulator most people laughed and thought I was joking. But it's actually really great!

It needs to add increased probability of being pulled over for minor infractions at the end of the month for "Quota's" for maximum realism.

Wow, Parking the delivery is so much harder than in ETS2. Often there is no space to turn around.

Did 2 deliveries so far SD 2 LA and LA to Fresno. Driving through America, listening to a stream of a christian radio station....

A feature that I'd like (even more in ETS2) is that you can set the radio to switch to regional radio stations randomly when going from one state (country in ETS) to another...

I have become the godking of parking, spoken of in legends.

They did a lot to make this feel very American, so the bits that aren't stand out more, and are pretty funny. The limit always seems to be 30 when I'd expect 35, red lights still have stop signs at them as well for whatever reason, and I love getting emails to visit my local "banking centre."
