American Truck Simulator |OT| Freedom gives me a Semi with a Heavy Load

For some weird reason (never been much for driving games) I find myself drawn to this game. However, I wonder if there is any use whatsoever without a steering wheel. What do you say people, wait for the vr revolution or just buy myself a wheel and get it over with?

I play it with a controller more than a wheel. It's a fantastic game, you don't need a wheel to enjoy it.

well, of course a wheel will be the "best" way to go. but i've been playing this as well as ETS2 with a DS4 and am enjoying myself. sure, theres a wheel on my amazon wish list, but... someday.....

My dad drove trucks for a decade before retiring a few years ago. He has since built a computer with a 4 monitor set up (3 stretching horizontally with a additional one above the central monitor) for the purpose of train and flight simulators... And now this. Since he finally has dual GPUs, I should be able to get all the monitors working, and definitely will be grabbing this for him!

was falling asleep at the wheel, had to rest.

found this quaint lil rest stop.

mom seemed nice enough.....

Where is that?

from the wikki as I forgot to take note...

Bates Motel
The Bates Motel easter egg is located between Barstow and Bakersfield, On Route 58. It features the infamous Psycho House and an abandoned Oasis Hotel. Visiting the psycho house at night, you can see a silloheute of a person in the top left window. It disapears during the day. You can sleep at this location, but it is not recommended. A video can be seen here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1J6_r0srSA

also, while im here...

thats subtle enough right guys?!?!?!?!

When I started ETS2 I played with a 360 controller even though I already had a wheel (didn't feel like setting it up if ETS2 wasn't to my liking). It's fine for the most part; the only thing is you'll still need to use the keyboard for random things because there just aren't enough buttons, but the truck itself is perfectly drivable. In at least one way, it's actually better than the wheel: I find looking left/right easier on a controller than the d-pad on my wheel, which isn't always within easy reach.

yup. soon as you get a wheel you need to save up to get a track IR right after lol

(tis one of the reasons why I still dont have a wheel)

Well spent a few more hours pixel hunting and finally I did it!

Now I can download Promods without the map completion achievement mocking me. >_>

Bear in mind that $180K only gets you two additional slots, since you're occupying one. You'd get three slots for the same amount with a fresh garage.

what are some good starting strategies?

doing work, till I can afford my own truck?
getting a loan for a truck?
getting a loan for a second driver?

Get a loan at least to buy your first truck. You can probably manage a loan for a secondary driver as well, but it will make upgrading your own truck a bit slower. It mostly depends on how comfortable you are with seeing your profits being eaten away every day.

I'd say save up to $40,000 before getting a loan, since a truck will cost about $120,000. Also, as far as skills go:

1. Get the Flammable Gas skill
2. Only put 3 points into Long Distance. Nothing will take more than 1,000 miles...at least until Arizona comes out.

sort jobs by price per distance...

unlock at least 1 point in each skill that unlocks jobs save for hazardous cargo. get explosives and flammable liquids first. dont waste points in eco driving and currently dont bother with long distance past 3 points.

as you can see I have no points in just in time, but thats just me as im in no mood for those jobs, but will fill them in before I even look twice at eco driving.

grind up $120K ish and buy a truck, go to freight market and as before, sort price per distance.

as you can see, freight jobs pay more than quick jobs.

nows the time to grind for the first garage upgrade/new garage. if you upgrade your starter, you get 2 more garage slots. if you buy a new one, you get 3 slots. tis up to you.

grind up to buy a new truck, hire driver, put his ass to work. have them train their skills as you did. see if you can get one that starts with some of the hazmat ones already.

repeat till you own everything!

or yes, you could get loans... but thats just not how I roll :)

also, I would even go so far as to finish off long distance so im ready for when Arizona and such drop then put points in eco driving lol

but there should not be more than a couple of months of solid work ahead us, plus the final testing and polishing stage

so.. couple = 2 months, plus test and polish = 1+ (?)
3 more months for 1 state?
so see ya all in 11+ years lol
;)

You just idle until it's charged. Not sure if it helps to put some extra revs on it as well.

takes ages..

when I put it in neutral and press throttle, it goes faster.
but I have to change transmission type, because I can't put it in neutral on simple automatic..

Anyone else that uses the Xbox One controller finding that the ingame controls are fucked on Windows 10?

Took me a long time to figure out all the settings but like the person above said... make sure its not set to Wheel in the sub settings. It defaults to that..

Just tried playing it today. Something's definitely wrong. It's not set to wheel but I don't have any keyboard or mouse control in the menus with my controller plugged in. The control stick could be used as a cursor but I couldn't actually drive either with the controller.

People are having similar issues on the Steam ATS Community page.

It was working fine last night! :'(

Found this on reddit regarding the xbone controller:
Hey guys, in order to fix this quick you need to uninstall the KB3140743 update. If you don't know how to do that, go to Programs and Features and then click View Installed Updates over in the left panel. Find that update, click it, and click uninstall. Some guy on the Steam forums figured it out, but I couldn't find the thread back to give him due credit.

Ultimate Wheel Customization (SCS blog)

We were never quite happy with the existing system, it was too limiting. Customizing wheels should be more varied, more flexible, more fun! We have split our wheels into multiple components: Tire and Disk separation was introduced recently, in addition to it we have now added customization sub-components of the disk: Hubs, Hub Covers and Nuts.

Advanced wheel customization will come simultaneously to both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator with the upcoming update. Just splitting the existing wheel models into parts that you can recombine according to your wish will already give you a vast variety of different looks. On top of it, we'll soon release a small but cool DLC with extra wheel tuning options - things like paintable metal parts or crazy nut designs. Stay tuned!

I am a huge supporter of anything that gives me more tiny dots to click on when customizing trucks.

Can't watch the video but I hope they add those crazy spike nut covers that you see on trucks a lot. Will let me begin modding my W900 to Mad Max style.

I also need more light mods. On my way up to PA last weekend I saw so many trucks with crazy amounts of lights. One had red bars on the back of the cab that were as bright as its headlights.
