amiibo Festival down to $30 on Amazon. Was it a complete failure?

The animal crossing amiibo a have a hefty price cut too - especially Tom Nook iirc.
Game really didn't do well at all. Sucks that there's meant to be a second series of AC amiibo coming with even less popular characters.

It probably bombed. Doubt Nintendo expected it to be a hit though. At least HHD was still a success for the Animal Crossing brand.

It certainly didn't make a dent like Happy Home Designer did.
I'm lucky I got the game for free thanks to Target's B2G1 sale.

I buy amiibos for decorative purposes, not for their bonus in-game functionality so not totally surprised that a game based on it isn't doing too hot.

Edit: Do AC games usually sell well in the states? They're like the least recognizable figures available IMO.

In Mexico, some stores are selling it as low as $499 pesos (27.9 USD, Google tells me). Which is unheard of, not only for a console title released less than two months ago, but for a Nintendo title, and one which includes 2 amiibo and 3 cards at that. Amiibo here are usually sold for 300 pesos each, so you're getting the whole thing for less than the MSRP price of 2 amiibo.

And even THEN I didn't pick it up, and I'm someone who picked up Devil's Third.

I'll never forget the pain of that Giant Bomb stream. By far the least fun I've ever seen anyone have with a game, let alone a group of friends.

It's funny that Tom Noon dropped so fast, he's the only one I bought.

The Smash characters are strong enough to sell without much major game functionality, but Nintendo really missed an awesome opportunity by not releasing AC amiibo alongside a true AC game that used them in a big way.

It was on sale for $30 on Amazon a few weeks ago, not really a "new" deal. But surprised to see it come up again.

But it certainly seems like it didn't do well if they slashed the price in half two months after release -- pretty unheard of for a Nintendo published game. Not even Mario Tennis Ultra Smash has been slashed in price and that launched the same day.

I bet it didn't do what Nintendo wanted but I would also bet that it sells Amiibos. So dropping the price to get more Amiibo sales isn't a bad idea.

Proper games do. New Leaf was a huge hit.

Game looks boring, it deserves it.

I'm still annoyed that I can't buy KK Slider individually, stupid Nintendo had to bundle it with two other AC characters that I don't care about

My SO really enjoys Animal Crossing so I picked up for her when it released but it really is in no way a $60 game. It's a fun little board game, but Nintendo got greedy.

Looks like a way worse Mario Party. (Thought it lacks the raw emotion and stupidity of that series engenders too.) As if such a thing was even seemed possible.

I think the amiibo craze was mostly due to Smash Bros. Myself and everyone else I know was only buying the amiibos for that series (and yarn yoshi cause it's super cute). A game based on the amiibos for animal crossing wasn't going to be a big hit as far as I could tell.

I don't think Tennis flopped for its budget/expectations. AC:AF just went out with a wheeze, tripped, and died at the starting line.

For good measure, critics came by and shot it a few times in the back.

Nah. Splatoon and Yoshi did very well as well, the former is completely and regularly post-restock sold out in Japan.

The problem was that AC:AF was a bad use of them in a game that no one was particularly excited for or interested in. Same as the Mario Bros line with Mario Party 10. There's also waayyy too many of them.

I just don't understand why they thought AC amiibo was a good idea. How many people really wanted to own an amiibo of Lottie, Kicks, Digby or those two Llamas? I could understand making figures for the more popular characters like Isabelle but that's it really.

Edit: Though I must admit I plan on buying Rover, for reasons I don't really know but I just want to have him.

TBH, Nintendo's reason for making the game definitely seemed like a case of wrong priorities.

USG: Was the original concept behind Amiibo Festival to create an Animal Crossing Game that involved Amiibos? Or did the idea come along first and then the Amiibo integration was something that added in later in the Development Cycle?

AK: Initially when the Amiibo was announced, there was nothing really said about Animal Crossing Amiibos or any plans for that matter. But as the Animal Crossing team, we were confident that if there was one, it would be really cute... honestly, we just wanted Animal Crossing Amiibo. We wanted the company to make Animal Crossing Amiibo, so that's why we made a game that works with them.

I don't understand what it was supposed to do really.

The game is barely anything. Was it supposed to get people to buy Animal Crossing Amiibos? They were going to sell regardless.

Was it supposed to be a game that you are supposed to use with said AC amiibos? If that's the case why didn't Nintendo wait for a more substantial product?

I am very confused by the entire thing. I get that there is no reason to make a full fledged AC game on the WiiU at this point in the game but why do this?

Because this is just recycled assets, and a real game would have taken a lot of time and money to make on a dead platform?

Nope, you had all the models already (AC channel thing) not like the game is pushing the hardware to it limits, a small team can bang out an AC quicker than making a Mario party shit clone I would wager...

It's bizzare that they pulled this, if anything it should have been a free eshop title to push amiibos trying to sell it was foolish...

I'm going to be uncharacteristically salty and say that I'm kind of glad this game did poorly so that there was some semblance of a standard in terms of how far Nintendo could go with Amiibo based products.

It lacks the rage inducing, friendship ruining, wacky fun of Mario Party so it makes sense why it flopped. Plus it's the most blatant "BUY OUR ADDITIONAL MERCHANDISE" game I'm seen out of Nintendo in years.

I never wish for a game to do poorly buuuuut, I see where you are coming from.

Has been on sale for a few weeks.

There has been more threads about the sale...than people buying it. :p

It's a game where you're at a distinct disadvantage unless you've bought additional amiibo from the ones that come with the game.

I don't feel too bad.
Wait..what are the advantages?
Because 50% of the time I lose to my friends and the CPU, even having the amiibo and cards. :p

Why we got this over a traditional AC game I'll never know...

It sounds like the handheld AC games sell more than the console ones. At least from the last three.
Wild World and New Leaf sold more than City Folk.

This is probably correct. Nintendo is attempting to use this game to sell amiibos rather than give a full title. Basically, the game is a bonus.

Definitely a flop.

Which is a shame, because the actual amiibo figures look fantastic, as they usually do, and an Animal Crossing-themed party game wasn't a bad idea.

I bought it along with Super Mario Maker back when Best Buy was having a Buy 1, Get 1 40% off sale. With GCU I more or less matched buying what buying both games from Amazon now is, so I'm not terribly upset.

they overestimated AC's selling power.

amiibo money grubbing doesn't go well. i don't think even a game like this themed after Zelda or Pokemon would have been well-received (Mario Party 10 was also badly received)

This title has a strange symbolic significance that I am having trouble articulating.

It didn't sound like a good idea
