Many heavy hitters here. I think Trails 1st Chapter is the best of them all because it combines the character and worldbuilding of the first TiTS (Heh) which I believe are best in genre, with some damn good modern production values. Persona 5 Royal is in my opinion the best game all around, but less of a pure JRPG. DQXI goes third because it's, for me, the best "classic" JRPG available. Then Like a Dragon is fantastic because it's technically perfect and has a quirky setting and plot. Metaphor also does everything right, though the characters (imo) are less strong than the other 4.
Clair Obscur, while being a great game, is too artsy, angsty and short for me to consider it top 5.

I still only have like 90 minutes in that game. I was SO excited for it before it came out as I'm a HUGE Atlus fan and Persona is my favorite franchise of all time (I love SMT as well but I personally like Persona more).
I fell off of it as I spent that entire time wishing I was playing a Persona game instead. I really should go back to it though and give it another try as I probably just wasn't in the right space for it.

yes it is. JRPG is a subgenre of RPGs that focuses on predetermined characters with predetermined roles, in a semi-linear or fully linear story.
Expedition 33 fits that perfectly. Dark Souls, an RPG made in Japan, doesn't fit this whatsoever for example. because Dark Souls is a western style RPG.

I voted for P5 Royal, but I haven't played most of the others.
I liked P3 Reload a lot more then P5.
FF6 and Chrono Trigger are still the two best, followed closely by Phantasy Star IV. Honestly I think I would put P3 Reload and P4 Golden just behind those 3.

lol I think the weebs don't know what to do with this one.
Include it as a JRPG? Then it brings shame upon all the veteran JRPG studios because a new French indie studio outdid them at their own craft.
Exclude it as a JRPG? Well then, don't you ever complain about "JRPG" being used as a pejorative anymore.

A lot of good games on that list, and I've played most of them, but E33 is the best JRPG I've played since Xenoblade 1.

I disagree. developers have not made better JRPGs than were available in the 90s and early 2000s. All the money and better tech and they are still unable to measure up.
