I'm not really sure where you get that idea. The table posted earlier is about worldwide smartphone market; iPhone going to Verizon won't change global smartphone market in any significant way. There is no way for iPhone to catch Android in any foreseeable future. There is no doubt that US is an important market but it is not that important - this year will probably end with around 300 milions of smartphones sold - this is equal to the whole population of US.

Android has almost two times bigger marketshare in US than iPhone (44% vs 23%) acording to NPD in 3rd quarter of 2010, so Apple would have to double sales of its handset to even win the US market. I don't really see it coming true even with Verizon on board.
And its not like Apple has the same policy with sticking with one carrier in other countries as it has in US. In Poland (which I happen to live) iPhone is avalible in each of 4 major carriers and from what I know its also sold unlocked in some other EU countries.
The selection of Android phones on the other hand is not as good as it is in US. There is not Droid 2 or Droid X, no Samsung Epic or Evo 4G (there is somewhat similar HTC Desire HD but it was released just recently).

The other thing to bear in mind is that Apple aren't necessarily interested in being no1 in marketshare. If it was that important to them they could have indulged in a price war or introduced an iPhone mini - like an HTC Wildfire type device but running on iOS. For Apple it's all about margin, product design and brand value. Apple won't risk diluting the power of the iPhone brand by flooding the market with iOS devices to cater to all needs.

When Apple do make a deal with another network in the US expect them to be incredibly agressive in terms of that contract - Apple will want a long term commitment and a large chunk of the networks acquisition budget - that means less money for companies such as Verizon to spend on Android and future Windows 7 handsets, thus squeezing the competition before the consumer even has a choice. It's how Apple do business.

Fuck that, Apple is no longer in the position of authority it was in even a year ago. Verizon is selling a ton of Android phones, WP7 comes out next year there, and they still have the best network in the US. Yeah, there are still folks who would switch to Verizon if they get an iPhone or that are thinking of leaving, but that number is shrinking every month, not growing and the Android momentum means ios' influence is waning.

Now, someone is going to misinterpret my paragraph above and think I'm saying that Verizon wouldn't want an iPhone on their network. Of course they would, but what I am saying is that Apple no longer has the stranglehold on the market in terms of excitement, innovation, and momentum that it had even this time last year. Android has the momentum, the awesome phones, the buzz, and the growth right now. Verizon doesn't have to bend over backwards for Apple the way AT&T did. Heck, AT&T is starting to realize they don't have to bend over backwards for Apple either. Samsung's Galaxy phones are selling well, WP7 has good buzz, and it's no longer a situation on that network where its either iPhone or nothing. I'm sure AT&T could announce a few Android superphones the same week Apple announces the Verizon iPhone and they'll be fine.

So, the Nexus S is real.

Best Buy accidentally put up placeholder text for it. It was suppose to come exclusively to T-Mobile this holiday season, and as the rumors suggested, it was going to run pure Android -- most likely, Gingerbread.

It seems like the hardware causing a delay may be true after all.

Full details here.

I’m telling ya’ll that shit is going to be next week’s reveal with 2.3 on it.

That may still happen.

There was a link to preorder one on the Best Buy site, but it leads to a blank page.

As you can see, the page header says "Google Nexus S."

So, yeah, in summation:

Nexus S is real.
Coming to T-Mobile exclusively.
It will be sold exclusively at Best Buy.

Pure Google!!

Yes all over my phone!!

We just need a decent phone every year to carry the Nexus mantel. It will always be the phone I will purchase, even if I pay upwards of $500.00 for a pure Android experience.

i wonder when the ATT supported one will be released. Probably not before the end of year... will end up being an incredible HD vs a Nexus S choice.

i need to borrow a tmobile phone and see where i hit issues. I'm just scared of their coverage

Is it just me, or does every Galaxy series phone have a blue tinted screen. I've seen like three different people with one and all of them had this issue. Not like it just had cool temp colors, but it really did seem like it had a light sky blue film over it.

as long as samsung fixed that damn lag problem, i'm ok with them giving it the nexus name. i just wish we'd get gingerbread already!

by and large those with 2.2 and the later beta 2.1 ROMs are doing fine with GPS....

Mine used to suck with the orig FW, but on a 2.2 beta, no issues at all. Nav works like a champ.

Really the only thing of note is that there is some stalling occasionally when you don't use a lagfix. This is apparently due to the files system samsung uses. I am not sure if the official 2.2 will fix this. If not there are tons of fixes to pick from EXT2/4 etc.

I am quoting myself for an update...I recently loaded my Captivate a newer rev of Cognition (v2.3b3) which has a bunch of updates, basically a new build using the JJ4 leak, has built in voodoo lag fix, and tons of other goodies.

Anyway, my Captivate is absurdly good right now. My first GPS lock (no hot fix, started with entire world map) was in less than 5 seconds. Longest after a few days was 15 sec. It has both very quick locks, and still great moving with Nav (getting both was a problem on some earlier fixes). Speed is amazing - zero hitches EVER, no more waiting forever to get the list of apps (creating shortcuts and such), the wireless AP works consistently and quickly, and free. Has preloaded root, sideload, all markets, ID change. Still has the awesome Samsung control bar when you pull down the notifications.

Check out XDA devs under Captivate development if you want to try.

Sony Ericsson turned down the option to make the Nexus One. Idiots. Seriously I could do a better job than whoever is in charge of mobile development.

not sure they were idiots... its not like it ever sold gangbusters, and Sony's follow up support to phones that would have been non google isn't exactly stellar. THey would have to have been ready to push a bunch of phones with the same hardware and ready to support it for it to have any kind of impact. At least with this phone it will be sold by retailers.

Well if memory serves HTC basically copied the Nexus One but with Sense thrown in and made a shit load of dosh via the Desire and did their reputation no harm in the process. Here was a perfect opportunity to get Sony Ericsson back into the high end smartphone space, create some groundswell and have an opportunity to get in on Android 2.1 early. What did they actually give us? The Xperia X10 running 1.6, will finally get an upgrade to 2.1 at the end of this month/December by which point Nexus One owners will have Gingerbread as will Nexus S owners. HTC may not have sold a crap load of Nexus Ones but I'd say a) It still made a profit b) It consolidated their rep for being a cutting edge Android manufacturer both amongst the Android community and the general public and c) The Desire did sell Gangbusters in Europe. It was a bad move by Sony, the Xperia X10 just showed us how out of touch they are.

and they've got a follow up with the x12 that still isn't running froyo. they seem to be hopeless

my point more was a long the lines of without support for your secondary phones that were created off of the N1 hardware, you wouldnt be successful. Sony can't support shit.

Yeah, I know the story. Ericsson has some nice designs. That Nexus would have been a beaut.

I'm reading this Nexus S will have the same "platicy" feel and look as the Galaxy phones :-/

Wife just got the Samsung Epic on Sprint.

After now having used both the Epic and Captivate, I can safely say that the Galaxy S line is the biggest pile of shit I have seen from a major manufacturer in a LONG time.

What a joke these phones are. My Moto X feels like an Abrams tank compared to these crackerjack toys.

That's was my fear for this Nexus S. Not that I was going to buy it anyways. I'm pretty happy with One.

I doubt Gingerbread will slow down my user experience on the phone. Once they hit 3.0 I might have to get a new phone. Will wait for the next Nexus.

I really wish the next Nexus wasn't shaping up to simply be a Galaxy S variant.

I feel like the Moto Droids are the only Android phones that people aren't always having some niggling problems with. X 4 EVA!

the only problem i have or have ever had on my n1 has to do with the shitty touch sensor.

Woah, what do we have here? A new "In Store" web-based flier from Best Buy Mobile has this little nugget on its front page: a previously unseen Galaxy S, running stock Android (possibly 2.3, based on the green icons and black notifications bar) and harboring what looks to be a front facing camera. Sounds like a Nexus S to us! Paired with this morning's little Nexus S slip-of-the-tongue from Best Buy, we're starting to get our hopes up. Don't let us down, Google / T-Mobile / Samsung / Best Buy / planet earth!

Seconded

Since the Droid X thread is pretty dead I figure I'd ask here. Where can I buy an extra charge cable for my Droid X? I want one for work but don't want to accidentally end up leaving my only one there.

Aww come on. I was just on the cusp of getting the MT4G and/or the G2 next week and this pops up.

*resumes the waiting game*

Then again. If Tmo does end up having their "ALL PHONES ARE FREE" sale around Black Friday I may very well jump in on both of the above-mentioned phones.

Nexus S... interesting. I hope it doesn't end up being a Galaxy S variant (although it sure looks that way. I loved my brief encounter with my ATT Nexus One... but the touch sensor issues were too much on mine. I still think HTC produces awesome phones though.

In what way? Haha. It's a slate phone.

I wonder if that's a real Gingerbread shot or some mock-up? Black notification bar w/ green indicators? Browser (is that broswer?) now with a green icon?

thats exactly what the phandroid.com rumors said it'd look like. seems legit

ok, we have the picture. now wheres the damn annoucement. and where's our gingerbread :lol

Seriously. The head of the Open Handset Alliance said Gingerbread is coming this week and it looks like it's not. Wonder if it got delayed or that dude was just trying to draw hits to his Twitter?

This is the main reason I'm thinking of getting rid of my Nexus 1. As much as I like it it happens a couple times a day, usually in the car and it's enough of a pain that I want to get a different phone.

Yeah...They have been stating that "Green" would be more profound across the OS. The dark (black) notification was also part of the rumor.

Did they say anything else about Gingerbread? I never saw those rumors.

It's rounded with a lot of wasted space and looks like more of a plastic than metallic design.

3.7" I bet.

So this Sharp Android with the 3D screen and slide out keyboard thats comming out in Japan, will I be able to import one and slap in my sim?

it sounds pretty awesome to me.

What? All of these phones have been very incremental in there approach for the latter part of this year. Even SE's phones, which I'm assuming will be formerly shown off at CES don't really seem that impressive spec wise, going by rumors.

yup, thats kinda the same reason i'm even contemplating this. It happens often for me and its beyond annoying to making me want to snap the phone in half at times... then it goes away and life is good.

I need to see a better picture of that though, because... umm... in my opinion that looks extremely ugly. Here's to hoping it supports t-mo's "4g"

you'll probably see Tegra 2 phones shown there... dual core phones, etc. So yeah, i'd expect to see the "next gen" of phones there.
