Android Hardware Thread - 2010 Edition

I shat all over the Supersonic previously but I liked what I saw in that leaked video, although it does look a bit thick. I wish they could squeeze an AMOLED into it or at least bump the resolution a bit though. I don't see what the point of engineering a device that large is if you're just going to reduce the pixel density with it.

I have a question for you all: I'm stuck on AT&T at the moment. I intend to switch to Sprint sometime and buy whatever superphone they appear to be debuting within the next year but I'd like to ditch this shitty Samsung Impression and AT&T's network sooner rather than later.

I'm thinking of bullying Sprint (they're pretty pliable, we've found) into tossing me a free Moment to open a new number on my family's plan and then upgrading ASAP, whenever that would happen to be. The Moment seems like a pretty nice phone in its own right so... any tips or advice? Is this worth pursuing? Should I go for it?

Edit: and great thread, Andrex.

Moment is a great phone. Personally I'd wait until 2.1 is rock-solid confirmed, but there's enough rumors about it that you shouldn't feel too slighted if you get it now.

And thanks. <3

Awsome thread, great job Andrex!

Not even done yet either. Banner needs to be re-done (rushed it out when I realized I hadn't made one :lol), I'm gonna aim for something like BruceLeeRoy's MGS4 thread banner. :D And of course the other sections need to be filled out.

Up next on my list: remaking the dev thread. That OP is waaayyyy out of date.

The folks at XDA and PPCGeeks have been working on porting android to the touch pro 2. It's coming along nicely. All we need is sound and other minimal stuff but other than that, it works good. Windows mobile 6.5 and android ftw

There was some kind of software somewhere that allowed a WinMo 6.5 handset to dual-boot either it or Android, wish I could remember what it was.

And I wish I could go back in time and tell myself that the porting of Android to the Touch Pro2 won't go nearly as fast as I thought...

XDA is bringing everyone together.

Except iPhone users.

Fuck them.

Not really

Yeah I saw they now have forums for Motorola handsets? That's great. The A in XDA will soon stand for Android. :D

Just went and there's Acer and Samsung too! :O

This is awesome. I've always thought Android needed its own dedicated ROM cooking community. XDA seemed to be it but they were exclusive to HTC and non-exclusive to Android... but now that that's fading... :D

Android must be so much more fun to tinker with. Google knew what it was doing making it open source. :D

From the guys @ Android and Me:

Rumored specs of the HTC Incredible include:

* 768 MHz Snapdragon processor QSD8650
* 3.7 inch AMOLED screen WVGA resolution

* 8 MP camera with dual LED flash and AF
* Android 2.1 with Sense UI
* Optical track pad
* 1300 mAh battery
* Shipping with 8GB MicroSDHC card
* FM Tuner
* Dimensions: 117.5 mm (L) x 58.5 mm (w) x 11.9 mm (T)

The back of the Incredible is now black.

I'll be getting a new phone this year, hesitating between an Android and a WM7. My last phone was an N95 8GB, until the screen died *sadface* It'll all depend on specs/pricing/style in the end, and in that order more or less.

I'll be needing an 8.0MP camera and 8+ GB ROM, and a physical keyboard would be nice. Wonder how the Halo will end up, but I don't like the current UI..

Not so incredible...

I'm guessing they are under clocking it for longer battery life?
Yeah. It's packing a snapdragon.

Edit: and it's supposedly more than enough to run Sense on top of 2.1 just fine, according to the Engadget version of the article.

What? I'll be keeping a tab on this thread as most of the phones I'm looking at are Androids (all of them at this point since no WM7 phones have been announced).

Halo could be "come outta nowhere" incredible or possibly the worst phone ever. I really want to know how much they've improved TouchWiz since the wonky Behold II implementation.

Well, it doesn't seem to be very practical, since I thought Android phones had a limited amount of dedicated space for app storage, and an external memory card would be more versatile or reusable.

Andrex, you should note the difference between the Desire and Incredible in the OP (fantastic OP, BTW).

Also, what is the deal with that tag?

Yeah HTC's handsets confuse me sometimes. :lol

It's from this thread when I was translating others' tags. :P

Whatever guys, I don't have the cash for a separate camera right now, so I'm looking for the best camera out there on a phone right now. What's the point of getting a 3MP when there are already tons of phones with 8MP cameras out there? I'd have understood that :lol if I had asked for a 20MP camera on my phone.. What's more useful, a projector, or a camera?

We don't know anything about the screen type or resolution yet do we?

so android continues its quick climb up the OS charts! Next up.. WinMo
Pffft, only 250% growth? If it weren't for all that fragmentation, it would have overtaken WinMo already. ;)

Here's a pic of the front of the Incredible that's been floating around since yesterday. I think it looks sharp. From everything I've read even with 768 Snapdragon the phone is still "blazing fast" according to the tester that had hands on with the unit.

And to anyone that thinks the red back is what the phone looks like, it's just the back without the battery cover. The real back of the phone is black. Although there are red accents on 3 places of the phone. Around the camera lens, the minusb port, and the earpiece on the front.

It's my understanding the red accents are gone and in one of the pictures they are now black and now there are even more rumors that it's a 1ghz Snapdragon just like the Nexus One but it throttles down depending on what your doing which I'm sure the Nexus One does as well.

And it supposedly has over 6GB of ROM.... and 1GB of RAM.... doctored image? or is this like the screenshot we saw of the Supersonic running Android 3.1 something that be altered on a rooted phone I think.

phone of the future confirmed

:lol Snapdragon processor plus 1 GB of RAM would make it a better computer than my circa-2006 laptop. Damn technology moves fast. :lol

The specs that Andrex posted are the ones leaked by the person who actually tested the unit. The 6GB of ROM is supposed to be fake, just like the 1Ghz processor with the throttle. But like anything else on the net, take it with a grain of salt.

Like someone said sometime ago, those setting screens are very easily doctored and doable on any android phone. So they're no longer reliable sources of information.

1 gig of ram would be insane.......Heck 512mb of ram on the nexus is more than sufficient (non rooted users you still have 256mb). I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that ram figure is faked, it would be extra cost for no real benefit at this point in time. 512mb is more than enough for 2.1, unless there is significantly more ram usage in future updates it seems like overkill.

Which one was the Incredible again? Was it just the Nexus One in a new case? Or is that the Desire?

Also, is there anything exciting rumored to be coming to T-Mobile? My contract is up in September and I'd like to renew with them, rather than switching to AT&T. I was hyped for the Nexus One, but by the time September rolls around, HTC might have outdone itself twice over.

N1, Incredible, and Desire are all basically the same phone, spec-wise, except

N1..
- Dual mics for background noise cancellation
- Trackball instead of optical
- Charging contacts for accessories

Desire
- Bit more RAM than N1, 576MB
- Hardware buttons instead of capacitive
- FM Radio (N1 has this, but no driver support for it right now?)

The Incredible is still largely unknown, but it should have an 8mp cam and at least 512MB RAM. I'd say it's a bit of a hybrid btw. the N1 and Desire... or basically Verizon's version of the Desire.

^Links don't work. :[

Is the back of the phone seriously going to be shaped like that?
Christ.

No mention of the Pulse mini? Not a brilliant phone but not terrible for £99.99.
Speaking of Pulse, anybody on GAF have or used the original 'big' one? Thoughts?

I bet once this FM Radio comes out, the drivers will be pulled and put onto the N1.

Hopefully, but last I read the Desire ROM they've been able to get onto the N1 doesn't have support for the FM Radio program... maybe different chipsets for some reason? Wouldn't make much sense that way, though.
