So we got a *dummy* of the Xperia X10 today which we should be stocking from March the 29th.

Obviously not a working model but the dummy is made from the same external materials of the finished product. All I can say is that it looks and feels great. The back is made from a material which feels really nice in your hand, soft but providing a strong grip. It's also curved which makes it really comfortable to hold in your hand. I'd read somewhere that there was a feeling that the phone was a bit 'plasticky'. Well yes the front casing is made from plastic, but not cheap plastic. It looks good and there is a slight chrome trim round the edge which adds to the effect. The phone feels more comfortable to hold in the hand than the HTC HD2, isn't too much bigger than the Nexus One and is slimmer than I'd imagined. If you have a nose around my photobucket account you'll see some more pictures including Nexus/HD2/Xperia X10 comparison pictures. Until I see a working model I can't give a final verdict but first impressions of the form factor bode well - looks alone have convinced two of my colleagues who were waiting for the Desire that this will be their next phone. :D

I'm liking - shame the Android icons are stock vanilla ones - stil I'm sure you can get a matching theme for them. I want that white X10 badboy. You will be miineeee!!! I like the face detection in photos - the way it recognises the faces and stores the pics under your friends contacts. Neat.

On subject of Sony.

The Vivaz Pro.

Wonder if X10 will get a pro version?

X10 Mini Pro?

I am more interested in the Supersonic than the N1. I just hope that big-ass screen has some resolution to match. I've never seen one in person, but is the HD2's screen any good? I mean brightness and density. How's it compare with the N1's screen? 4G isn't as important to me since I'm in Miami. By the time we get Wimax, there'll be a better phone out there for me. PEACE.

So in this scenario Palm would basically be competing only on the quality of their hardware against HTC, Sony, etc?

And software if they made an Android skin, which IMO would be much easier than making an entire OS and app ecosystem from scratch.

Well the WSJ article scares me about Sprint.

One of Sprint's problems has been the need to maintain two incompatible networks—its own and the one it inherited from Nextel. Clearwire's adds a third, which Sprint intends to continue investing in. That may prove to be a lonely bet.

While Clearwire pioneered wireless broadband, carriers including AT&T and Verizon Wireless have ignored its WiMax technology in favor of a rival 4G standard called Long Term Evolution.

The camp of WiMax backers, which includes Intel Corp. and Comcast Corp., has recently lost some supporters. Last week, Cisco Systems Inc. closed its WiMax business, following fellow equipment vendors Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks. Cisco and the others said they wanted to focus on LTE equipment.

Another problem for Sprint— and all U.S. carriers—is that the domestic market for cellphones has been saturated. Growth now depends on getting customers to trade up to more expensive services like mobile Internet, email and other data.

No South Florida Love.. :(

We roam on Verizon's network free, so 3G will never be an issue. But I'm probably not getting 4G for a while. So I'll stick with Sprint and their superlow rates (really can't beat them for the amazing coverage) until the competition either gets a major leg up in high-speed data, or better rates. Neither is likely to happen this year though.

Is LTE supposed to be faster than Wimax? That's the other thing for me. If Wimax proves faster, I'll be tempted to wait for it to eventually reach Miami. PEACE.

I wish there was an easy to read map that compared all four carriers' 3G coverage. It's something like Verizon > Sprint > AT&T > T-Mobile I think?

I lost internet for a while and used a neighbors WiMax through Clear and let me say, it was fucking atrocious. My little city Amarillo has had it for a while, you can see it on that graph for getting it in 2009.

Again, terrible, terrible service, in fact it was worse than using my 3G evdo from Verizon and I'd actually say it was worse than dial up for most tasks. The connection was shaky as fuck, sometimes it'd switch from a tower it had a decent signal on to another for God knows why and then lose the ability to talk to either for 30 minutes or more as it goes through a loop of trying one shitty tower after another until it finally decides they're all equally shitty and to just pick one. Once on a tower, even when it was good signal strength, it was shit. The latency was something fierce with many web pages unable to even finish loading, I guess the latency was causing packets to be out longer than the normal TTL. Ugh. If it had one silver lining, it was that for a single established data transfer it was pretty speedy, faster than my Verizon phone, sometimes downloading at over 100k easy, but it could not do multiple connections well and attempting to do anything else would cause that download to time out.

I can not express my distaste for this service enough, I now have internet through my cable company again and am letting that neighbor use my connection, which for her laptop usually connects at like 1 fucking bar at 1mb and she's fucking so excited over how fast it is! That's terrible.

Their commercials piss me off like nothing else, get the same fast speeds at home or on the road, what fast speed? Video conference, how? How do you fucking video conference on such a shitty network?

Do not bank on WiMax, it is shit, let it die. This is not a big city, this is not a city with tons of sky scrapers and shit blocking the signal, this is the stereotypical Texas city where everything is flat and no one built up because there was no need, and if the signal can't fucking work here, it won't work anywhere.

I live in North Carolina and strangely enough we have a lot of wimax here, and second only to Texas. Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh all wimax. :D

That Sprint article is very scary. I knew their situation was extremely grim but I didn't know it was that bad. :/

Have you guys seen the latest news about X10 series prices? And again, SE are continuing to dig their own grave. It is not just the price. Nothing has changed yet, SE.

X10 is out the window for me. It will probably get one update during the winter with 2.0 and then it will be forgotten by SE.
I wouldn't mind the price if some level of commitment from SE was there.

I hope HTC supersonic gets announced for Europe soon or I'll get the Desire.

Sprint will probably go out of business soon or be bought by Verizon, although I don't really see much of an upside for Verizon if they do buy them, except being able to brag about more subscribers than ATT. If the Supersonic doesn't impress me I will just switch to ATT in June and get the new Iphone. ATT already has HDPSA speeds, which is almost as fast if not as fast as Sprint's Wimax network, plus they will start doing LTE next year.

Nice lag SE douchebags. Not only these fuckers don't know shit about making decent software but they have to create buggy custom interface for their fucking phones even though they fail every time. And what's worse is that I'm forced to buy their shit because the hardware is usually so good.

Fire your entire software team SE. Get rid of this cancer once and for all.

Supersonic is CDMA right?and 4g, here in portugal there's no 4g support.....so its either desire or incredible....

Thats hardly an issue since snapdragon can handle most systems and just replace wimax with lte chip and slap a new name on it.

We have 4G in Sweden you know.

Thats assuming that HTC will release supersonic in 3g mode. We still dont know the final specs for both phones so lets wait.

why choose that over HTC desire, incredible or supersonic??
Because the X10 is a fantastic piece of hardware. Who knows, maybe someone will clean it up and get 2.x on it. I bet Sony won't until next year.

with 1.6 android??? besides the latest batch of HTC phones all come with 1ghs snapdragon too. And they seem to have more ram .

Unless something changed in the past few months - no Sprint does not roam on Verizon for EV-DO (3G).
Huh? I thought that's what was said all last year. Hell, it's the reason I switched to Sprint to readily. AFAIK, we roam free on their network so long as more than 50% of out usage is done on Sprint's network. I thought I read this on multiple forums, as I shopped around before changing plans again. PEACE.

Let me get this straight: HTC cameras are a fucking joke. When you compare them with SE cameras they become an bigger one. There's no middle ground to tell you the truth. Either you choose HTC with horrible cameras and mediocre design but great software, or SE with horrible firmware gorgeous design and great camera. Samsung might also become a choice but I hate their cheap plastic design on most phones and wannabe futuristic look. Plus they kinda suck at firmware too.

But be warned, the software in SE phones is truly horrible. They couldn't even get the battery indicator right (when the battery was almost done it was showing 50%) on the Satio and the clock was losing seconds each day. I'm not kidding. I hate them, I really do. Yet, I keep buying their phones.

Well HTC legend looks superior to this x10 design wise.

Android 1.6 is not hardware. Also, regarding snapdragon, yes, the other phones have it. However, their hardware is nowhere near as sexy as the X10.

My problem with the X10 is that it really does look ginormous.

It not that big if you've got used to this generation of smartphones. It's 119 x 63 (thickness 13 mm). Cut a paper with these dimensions and decide for yourself.

edit: Just remembered another ridiculous bug with Satio. Sometimes the alarm doesn't work. I missed work one day because of this shit. Morons.

You can roam on Verizon's voice and 1x (pre-3g) data network, not EV-DO (3G). You also could roam on Alltel's EV-DO network, although I'm not sure how that changed with the merger. You also can roam on most local CDMA carriers, but I'm quite sure you can not, today, use EV-DO on Verizon's network with a Sprint phone.

I'm not quite sure where to take this question, but I figure the hardware thread is a good place to start...

This has been going on for the past day or so now. I'll be in the middle of a conversation and then the keyboard will all of a sudden stop responding as I type. The buttons will be clickable and they'll raise as my finger goes over them, but none of the letters will show up in the corospondence.

I can click on programs interact with the phone normally and make calls it's just whenever I try to send messages it doesnt work. So I'm left having to shut off the phone and then turn it on. Which is only a temporary solution (and a really annoying one). Has anyone had this issue and are there any suggestions you have for fixing it?

oh yeah and it's a MyTouch 3G

There are phones like Samsung Beam and MOTOROI with better hardware. They have much better display panels, 8 mp and 720P video. They are better overall. Even the Droid is better hardware overall in my opinion.

Samsung Beam has WVGA Super AMOLED display vs. washed out FWVGA TFT 65K colours display on the X10. Even a 256K TFT Samsung display would be much better let alone a completely new AMOLED display panel.

In my opinion, Beam and MOTOROI are the best Android phones so far. I am still waiting for either of them. The phone that hits the market first will be my next phone, I hope.

I have had enough shit from SE. I know what to expect from this manufacturer. The X10 is still a good Android phone on paper and I hope SE doesn't fuck up this time when the phone hits the market although the hefty price tag says otherwise.
