with 1.6 android??? besides the latest batch of HTC phones all come with 1ghs snapdragon too. And they seem to have more ram .

it's getting either 2.1 or 2.2 later this year, confirmed.

and besides the far better cam, with auto focus and auto face tagging ... the UX overlay is actually cool.

timescape looks a fuck load better to me than HTC or winmo7's soultion to the all yr data in one place idea. so even with 1.6 as it is currently it has the features i want while htc doesn't.

New Nexus One card. :P

I didn't account for one phone being on so many carriers... one more and there'll be overflow.

I know there is an electronics show this coming week that will unveil new phones and release dates and such, but what's the dates?

Also, will there be a separate thread for it, or will everything feed into this one?

CTIA is March 23rd-25th not sure if there will be a separate thread but there probably will be since all the phones may not be just android phones.

Dear GAF

Sorry if I post in the wrong section but I'm looking for my first Android phone to get.

I have Sidekick LX 2009 from T-Mobile and my contract expires in a month. Also my phone charger is wonky.

Since I'm hard of hearing and I must have physical keyboard, I already checked out the Motorola Cliq and it doesn't suit me well.

I was thinking of getting Droid or Nexus One.

So should I wait for the new phone or what?

Thanks!

Oh I'm on T-Mobile, had them for 6 years.

If you must have a keyboard, then go with the Droid obviously. That is if you're willing to switch networks.

If you want to stay on T-Mobile and don't mind going keyboard-less, Nexus One is the best choice.

There's nothing really in the pipeline that will make the N1 obselete or anything.

The Cliq is obviously slower, smaller and lesser quality screen, etc. I'd recommend the Droid, but you seem content on T-Mo.

...since it's CITA this week; gonna be lots of announcements

Dell Aero is AT&T's second Android phone:
03-22-10delaero.png

Looks like Dell's finally entering the modern US smartphone market with a renamed Mini 3 called the Aero for AT&T. There's some serious Android UI skinning going on here -- it looks like a riff on what we've seen on the Streak / Mini 5 -- but that's all we know specs-wise at the moment. To be honest, we're somewhat concerned that this custom UI skin will be built on top of Android 1.5 or 1.6 instead of 2.1, and that AT&T will mandate a Backflip-style app lockdown -- until we get some hard details all we have is this tiny pic and and our usual hope for the future.

Engadget's review on Spring Design's Alex

springdesignalexreviewpost02.jpg

We're not saying that Spring Design's Alex doesn't have a ton of potential, it just doesn't have enough books or connectivity options to justify its $399 price point today. Here's where we remind you that the Nook and the Kindle both go for $259, and both are equipped with 3G access right out of the box. We definitely dig the form factor and the ability to (semi)-legitimately browse the web on an e-reader, but at the end of the day this device is for reading books -- popular books that have been published in the last decade and can conveniently be found. We'll wait for the summer updates and the 3G version to arrive, but let's not kid ourselves, by then we'll probably be looking at an entirely different e-reader / tablet ecosystem. Right, Apple and Microsoft?

I wonder if AT&T is going to bastardize the phone with Yahoo crap just like they did with the Backflop??

I went for the £35 a month for 24 months, free phone one.

That's what my current contract is (which I can't afford), but T-Mobile charge £10 a month (x24) with unlimited texts, data and 100 minutes with the phone for £165.

Dell bent over backwards for the Chinese market so nothing's stopping them from doing the same for AT&T. We can hope, though.

Motorola and Sprint have just officially announced the world’s first PTT (Pust-To-Talk) Android Phone with the Motorola i1, initially rumored as the Motorola Opus One earlier this year. The i1, which will be available this summer, features 3.1-inch touch screen, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, Opera Mini 5 browser, and of course a push-to-talk experience atop Android.

Not currently up on the MOTODEV site so I can't find the precise specs. Will post when they're up.

I hate to make a post like this, but when you want advice you ask the people that know this stuff... right?

So I'm planning on signing another 2 year contract and get a new phone in the process. Although my little Sony Ericsson has preformed well for so long, I'm thinking about finally getting a smart phone. I'm incredibly interested in getting an Android phone, and was wondering: What would be the "best" one to get for service on either AT&T, or Verizon? I'm not looking to break the bank here (the Nexus One costs WHAT on AT&T? Holy crap!), but would spend something in the $100-$150 range. I'm not totally sold on virtual keyboards yet, but I'm sure I could learn to like them (I don't think that's a huge problem). Lastly, I've never had a smart phone before, so I honestly have no idea what features and crap you should look for when getting one. I only ask that it can actually fit in a pocket, and it doesn't feel like I'm going to break it all the time.

If this isn't the place for this post, let me know. I can delete it and put it in the appropriate place. Thanks!

The Droid on Verizon sounds like a good fit for you, although the Verizon Nexus One (with subsidy) is rumored to be announced for tomorrow.

Sexy hardware ruined by what looks to be Beta firmware. Ridiculous. There are a lot of quirks to it. It just doesn't seem polished. And I would bet that SE isn't going to move to 2.x anytime soon.

Before anyone gets on my case again about what sexy hardware is, I mean the internals and overall form factor. There is no other phone out there with the awesome form factor like the X10.

I'm glad I jumped on the N1. I was always waiting for the X10 but knew it would end up a mess. Shame. Hopefully someone ports Mediascape onto an N1 ROM. That's the best thing about it.

My order kinda went into Limbo so I rang them(t-mobile) up and They said yeah your order was created and credit checked and was fine but seemingly no phone was then ordered. Just left with a contratct and nothing else. Now I'm on a frigging reserve list should they get more stock in over the weekend in excess if the misely 700 they have coming(for the entire UK) on Friday!!!

God damn it!!!

Amazing hardware coupled with ridiculous annoying bugs and lag caused by customization. Yeap sounds like an SE phone.

Btw don't expect these bugs to get fixed soon, I know from experience. These morons never learn.

yeah.. who didn't see this coming for the X10?

Which makes me wonder. Why the fuck are CEOs getting payed so much in companies like this? If you're so worthless that you can't make the necessary changes to your fucking company in order not to make the same mistake again and again why the fuck are you still employed?

Are these people mentally deficient? Their software team is obviously underfunded and lacks talent for years now. Do something about it, dickheads.

that review seemed pretty damn positive actually, one of if not the fastest browsers, best cam, best media player, looks great.

the issues boiled down to the keyboard ..which btw whats stopping you downloading another andriod k/b? they don't go into detail about that skipping char thing being a phone issue or just limited to that one custom k/b

and the other thing was the inital loading of media scape. weird seeing how fast the browser is .. but once it's loaded up ..it's plenty fast. and i've seen other vids of the thing auto updating on the fly and thats smooth.

looks pretty tight to me, plus sony have made lots and lots of noise about the 2.1/2.2 update so i seriously doubt they wont go ahead and do that.

even so ..how many more andriod updates untill that base OS catches up with media scape?

I know it was a very positive review but I promise you the phone will piss you off. I'm planning to buy it myself that's why it's so fucking infuriating for me. I keep buying SE phones for the hardware and the software always makes my experience with their phones a fucking nightmare.

And what's worse is the fact that they have ridiculous firmware support. I and the whole community been reporting to them bugs with the Satio for months, so it took them 4. fucking. months. to release a firmware update for this bug ridden mess and they didn't even address half of the problems. I'm just warning the people here what they're getting into.

X1 got one update and is just as sucky.
X10 will probably get 1 update during 10Q4 or 11Q1
But X10 will get a forum on XDA so someone might make it decent when they put HTC Sense on it :p

They've already announced that they're bringing 2.x to it, though they haven't said when. And as far as I know, you can switch out the SE customisation on the device and return to the vanilla Android experience (or anything else you care to install) - though I haven't checked this on a retail device, obviously.

Speaking of jerkiness, the X10 suffers from the same issue that plagues the Nexus One

What? I have a X1 too and know SE's shitty software and its shitty support, but nowhere does that review mention about it being their problem alone for the X10.

You're right, I wasn't clear on this. Reviews rarely catch all the bugs a phone has. Go take a peek at Satio and UIQ3 phone reviews for example. They mention a couple of bugs just like in this one but it's so much worse than that. I focused on SE's programming because that's where the problem usually is. I'm buying it in the next few months (I won't become a beta tester this time) but I know what's coming so I thought it would be nice to warn other people too.

Right, and there's my whole problem with buying this phone. SE always drops the ball on updating their phones. Sure, it is said to be coming. But when, when 3.x is out? And then never to be updated again, too.

It's not bad, PC Mag claims it'll be mega cheap, which is cool considering it's specs aren't bad at all, except the 1x Evdo.

But you've checked it on a non-retail device? Sneaky sneaky iapetus. ;)

Speaking of, do you know if it's possible to buy the X10 and just install a vanilla Android on it? Or will it not be possible due to driver issues, etc.? Maybe the xda community will be able to.

Damn, I still want a phone with good multimedia capabilities but SE's software support is just unreliable.

Anyone can make a list of things that you would miss by not having 2.x Android versions?

Has there been any talk of what carriers the Galaxy S will go to? Also, I thought you could get rid of the software on an Android phone. No?
