Supersonic is exponentially better.

hell yes! From Engadget:

We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage!

EVO 4G is a lame name. :P

Has there been any talk of what carriers the Galaxy S will go to? Also, I thought you could get rid of the software on an Android phone. No?

Sometimes, sometimes not. Motoblur can't be disabled, for example, and I don't think the original TouchWiz on the Behold II can, either.

I'm in love.

Fuck Verizon if they don't announce anything during this conference. Sprint just announced the Supersonic/EVO before Verizon could even get an official word out on their Nexus One or the Incredible, and we've been hearing rumors about those 2 phones a million times over compared to the Supersonic. I'm tired of the runaround now.

obviously the 4G wimax is what I'm really interested in, but with all the extra features I'm blown away here.

this is going to be the phone to beat for the next year.

Damn, I just about scorched my shorts. Ever since laying my eyes on the HD2, I wanted Android on it. This will be my phone. It's totally settled. I want this phone yesterday. Suck it down, N1 and Droid. Bow to your new Android superior. :D PEACE.

And just like that, Sprint takes the lead. If I still wasn't on contract with T-Mobile, I'd probably be regretting my Nexus One purchase. But, I'm stuck with T-Mobile until October.

The only thing that could make it better would be 1GB of RAM, which the Incredible has I think.

that sound you heard was millions of iphone owners suddenly getting an inferiority complex

but sans Wi-Max...its not as good a phone. did I read something in there about this thing having the ability to function as a 4g wi fi hotspot? holy crap. just...holy crap

Am I the only person that HATES the space bar on the HTC kb? I have a Hero, so in landscape mode, the kb is shifted over to the left thanks to the bezel. I hit space with my right thumb out of force of habit (iPhone and myTouch). The EVO has less bezel, so now that space bar should be in a comfortable spot again, but they went to slapped a row of arrow keys on there for no good reason. Actually, looking at it now I see no trackball, so I that explains the arrow keys.

Hmm...not sure how I feel about this. The screen is bigger so it will be much easier to hit keys than on my Hero, but I think the less they shift the layout to the left, the better. I hope it's customizable. With a screen this big, I honestly have no need for a trackball or even arrows. The only reason it's a necessity on the Hero and myTouch is due to the tiny screens. PEACE.

EDIT: Now that I see the mic button, I'm not worried. I forgot 2.1 had dictation software. The ROMs for rooted Heros don't support live wallpaper or dictation software yet. If it works well, it'll be my preferred method of text input anyway. But still...look at the space bar size and location compared to the iPhone and N1 on that site. I can't be the only person having issues with it.

Oh yeah, that 1.3MP camera on the front combined with 4G can only mean video chat, right...RIGHT? Man, this phone has some pimp shit going for it. Really looking forward to the official reveal. PEACE.

EDIT: Oh snap! Just saw that Sprint announced 4G expansion to "Los Angeles and Miami, plus Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and St. Louis":
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/sprint-announces-seven-new-wimax-markets-says-let-atandt-and-ver/

Hells yeah! One week after badmouthing them, they come with a badass phone and show my city some 4G love. I was about to say, I won't be paying any extra for 4G, given how awesome my current plan is, but if it's only like an extra $5 (or better yet, free) then I'll spring for it. Wow! I am so happy I switched to Spring now. I pay the least I ever have, have the most coverage I ever had, and am finally getting a slick phone to replace my previously awesome Hero. Funny how 6months turned this thing into a dinosaur. :lol

Skype announced that Skype Mobile will be launching this Thur. on VZW, and the N1 wasn't one of the 9 compatible devices listed (though the Eris and Droid were). I doubt Skype would launch such a program and exclude the device, so in other words, the N1 isn't coming out during CTIA.

Between 3/26 and 5/31 would be my guess. :(

I don't put much stock in that, really. The only reason the N1 and Incredible weren't on that list is because Verizon hadn't announced them up to that point. All they could do is announce something tomorrow and say in the press release that it will also be available with Skype and that's taken care of.

Verizon is getting their ass handed to them in terms of phones again (surprise, surprise) even after that pledge last fall of wanting to be the best network with the best phones. I should just pay my ETF and switch.

I was planning on sticking with my Palm Pre for a while... but if they really light up 4G in Washington, DC soon (it's been on the list forever) and this beast comes in at a decent price point (sub-200) I think I have to finally give up my tactile ways and go totally touch screen for this.

Also, I echo the call for a dedicated thread.

Man am I glad I held out on buying a Nexus 1 for a couple weeks. I can hold off another two months for that beast, for sure. It looks goddamn godly.

Cleveland and Pittsburgh 4g expansion made me rage, I was rejected from both universities I applied to in those cities :lol

That thing is beautiful but I'll stick with purchasing a Nexus on Sprint for now. The larger screen size does not appeal to me and by the time my contract comes up I'll likely be able to buy a 4G phone the size of the Nexus (which is perfect) so whatever. Still gotta declare my respect for the Evo though. Fucking unbelievable.

Is Sprint coverage in Pittsburgh good? AT&T was spotty and I didn't think Sprint was better, but I don't know many people with Sprint there.
My Sprint 3g coverage has been great. I'm originally from the DC area where lots of people have sprint. Came up here for PhD program and I don't think I know many people with sprint.

Sprint is bringing 4g here so I am happy :D

Same. This is a cool phone, no doubt, but (1)we don't know enough about it like price and 4G service costs, if any and (2)it's screen is big but...those Super AMOLED videos are insane. My next phone will have that. And idealy a slider keyboard.

I feel like keyboards are going to start to be a thing of the past. Especially on high end phones. Looking at the success of the iphone with a lack of a keyboard shows that people are willing to overlook the lack of a keyboard and thats less hardware/transistors on a device and more overall profit. Blackberry will continue to support the keyboard but HTC looks like they are straying away from keyboards and I do not blame them.

Embedded systems are all about transistor count and majority of those transistors are used for I/O. Chopping off the keyboard is an easy way to cut some of that cost.

Does not compute.

Looks like someone obliterated the Android Device Wave on Google Wave. So I'll be making a new private one.

Pretty sad that there's no OLED screen on Supersonic because it looks awesome otherwise. That will really make me debate between the Supersonic and N1 since I don't live in an area with 4G though I'm not far from DC. I'll just have to see them both in person somehow beforehand.

OK, so I guess I'll be making the EVO thread? Any objections? (Is there already one?)

I'm surprised now no one is complaining about the phone being too big for your hands and for your pocket! It's more than 4"! It can't possibly fit! ;p

Too bad about the TouchWiz stuff, I wonder if there's rom hacking support for Samsung phones.

Well, looks like my next phone has been confirmed, though i'm still waiting on Palm. I love WebOS. Are they gonna announce anything for this summer of what? :/ Hopefully 4G isn't much more expensive.

I don't know about that, mainly because RIM dominates the smartphone space and most Blackberry users are business people that are constantly emailing clients, contact, bosses and coworkers. I don't think most of those people going to a keyboardless phone.

I've been using Swype on my G1, and while it's really awesome and better than any soft keyboard I've used, I still use my hard keyboard to type long messages (GAF posts, emailing clients, etc.).

Maybe HTC is going to stay away from hard keyboards, which is too bad, imo. I've been waiting for a G1 refresh / new slider, having both a soft and hard keyboard is versatile.
