Well, looks like my next phone has been confirmed, though i'm still waiting on Palm. I love WebOS. Are they gonna announce anything for this summer of what? :/ Hopefully 4G isn't much more expensive.

There'll be the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on AT&T in June/July but it looks like Palm is teetering on the brink of oblivion right now.

But will u add "iphone killah" to the title?

I thought about adding "HD2 with a touch of Android" or "HD2 done right" to the title, but decided to keep things simple. :lol

WTF Verizon... WTF.
I'm pulling this from my posterior, but I'm betting Verizon's big splash will be when Apple announces that they'll release the next iPhone on Big Red and AT&T. iPhone scoop would be a much bigger deal than this. It would also explain why HTC might be offering Sprint their flagship phone. PEACE.

It'd also explain Apple's weird move to sell "contract-free" iPhones, even though they're still locked to AT&T... maybe...

Ugh, I can only hope. Though I am getting really tired of waiting. Wouldn't surprise me if Sprint gets the Nexus One before Verizon either.

They've done that before though, right? Locked or unlocked, it still couldn't be on Verizon though either.

Just seems to me that Verizon is missing out on some sales by holding on to their Droid does strategy, meanwhile all the latest and greatest android devices are going elsewhere.

to be fair, The supersonic/Evo is the same thing as the incredible (supposedly), so they offered it to verizon too. But since verizon doesn't have a 4g network up, they removed the wi-max capability.

I was referring to new Palm hardware coming to Sprint, but it's not looking like that'll happen soon, and with the current situation Palm is in along with the aging (?) hardware it's probably not in my best interest to spring for a Pre.

I disagree. Even counting the Evo, the Droid is still the third-best Android phone being sold and by far the best smartphone that Verizon offers (until the Nexus One hits, and they can't advertise that on TV anyways.)

The Verizon whiners in this thread remind me of the Sprint whiners before today and the T-Mobile whiners before the Nexus One. The point is all three of these carriers are getting awesome Android "superphones" and they also have a decent to great lineup of existing Android smartphones.

The only one we should be complaining about here is AT&T, and even they got the Nexus One second (unsubsidized, but still.)

Hey now, Sprint only had Hero before a couple days ago when V had Droid and TMo had N1. I quit complaining as soon as N1 news hit. :lol

hell yes! From Engadget:

We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/htc-evo-4g-is-sprints-android-powered-knight-in-superphone-armo/

someone make an official thread!

lower screen res than the x10 ..and the screen is bigger .. hmm .. dunno ..x10 is borderline on as big a cell i want in my hand ....

the prob with huge screen's is that every body behind you can read yr txts plain as day :(

If you can deal with buying a phone unlocked, you get the best of all worlds :D

lower screen res than the x10 ..and the screen is bigger .. hmm .. dunno ..x10 is borderline on as big a cell i want in my hand ....

you'd better believe it. The HD2 is huge and the EVO is huge. best learn how to tilt the screen!

So I'll be grabbing the Xperia X10 on Rogers when it comes out, I have some questions(General):

1) I've done my research and read up on Android and the updates. How does Google plan to deal with fragmentation? I heard that the X10 will be shipping with 1.6 and updating "sometime".

2) How are updates done? Do I have to pay?

3) The Android store is similar to the App store(never used either). Now there's free apps and paid ones, if I want to purchase an app do I just need to use a CC? Does it count as data usage to browse the store?

4) My last phone was a Motorola SLVR. 3G, 4G, I know of them...but not much. Do I NEED 4G?

5) Anything I should know before diving into these superphones?

What is a good android phone? I know nothing at all about them except a few things that I have read in this thread. I have T-Mobile. The current phone I have now is a Sony Ericsson W810i.

Google Nexus One. You'll have to buy it through google though.

1. It's pretty much up to Sony to make the update and your carrier to release it.

2. Updates are free and usually (with the exception of Sprint) done over-the-air, meaning they're automatically downloaded when detected and then installed at your convenience.

3. Android Market uses Google Checkout, and for T-Mobile (and some others, not sure on the specifics) there is an option to add the charges to your monthly bill instead.

4. 4G is still a long ways off, so no you don't need it. You're actually pretty fortunate if you get good 3G coverage, which is still pretty speedy.

5. Well you know about this thread so I'd say probably not. :D Oh, don't forget to have fun! :P

wow, that Supersonic looks INSANE!

I didn't think they'd up the specs from HD2, I thought they'd keep it the same... but man, 8MP camera, HD video recording, front camera, 1GB internal memory, bigger battery and all that running on Android..... crazy!

So go for the HTC Desire instead, which is fundamentally the same phone but cheaper and provided at a discount through mobile operators.

Difference is the HD2 and EVO have very little bezel. It's not too bad, but that screen is delicious.

Looking at those pics, it's clear why I prefer the iPhone keyboard. Android phones have a nasty habit of having asymmetrical screen positions. The iPhone is centered, so it feels more comfortable typing. I bet someone will make a mod for the EVO that will let you use the HTC keyboard that trackball phones will get with 2.1, so it looks like it'll be perfect then. I want the mic option, but not those stupid arrows. Ugh. PEACE.

Europe, gsm, when?

It's a safe bet that HTC is developing a GSM variant, without WiMAX....GSM is far to widespread to be ignored.

Also, I love how Sprint basically killed any hype TMo's HD2 had. Cold blooded. :lol

Totakeke said:
Why so little hype for the Samsung Galaxy S? The super amoled screen is still mighty impressive. ;p

Overshadowed by the Evo 4G, which had very little surprises. Killer phone, but yeah, I'm more interested in the Galaxy S, they did a screen comparison to the iPhone and it made the iPhone's blacks look blue, it's so beautiful and bright...and we've already seen the other Samsung AMOLED screen outside, it manages to look just as good as any other phone does inside.

I just think Touchwiz is gross and it's shameless how they're emulating the iPhone's look with their skin. W/e though, we need those screens in more phones now.

Man...I hope so.

I am also interested in the Galaxy S if TouchWiz can be removed in place of Vanilla android...tbqh.

Have we become this spoiled?

Because I agree with you. It's sorta disappointing.

I'd like to have the GalaxyS with Sense UI and then I'd be set.

Ultimately I'm going to have to settle with the EVO...just saying that I'm getting picky nowadays.

TFT is the new sharp knees.

They should have the Desire in a month or two. I'm interested to see if they gimp that phone with the AT&T crap as well. If so, I'm off to VZW or Sprint.

Don't rule out a Sense ROM getting ported to that monster.

I'd say "technically" it's the same phone, but fundamentally (and ideologically, I suppose) they are very different.

So, remember the touchscreen accuracy story from a while ago?
Well, MOTO group is back but this time with a Robot and a few more handsets! :o

Results seem about the same this time.

I've decided, I'm getting the Desire next week. Mainly because I can get it so damn cheap.

T-mobile, £129.00 for the phone, and £15 a month, you get 300 minutes, 300 text, "unlimited" (1gb) of internet, and also you get a flexible booster of your choice - I'ma gonna go for the unlimited texts. Averages out at about £20 a month including phone cost, and comes just under £500 for the life of the plan. And may also get some cashback if I go through the right site.

Quite excited now!

Don't know much about these ports...does it void warranties? When the release dates get nearer I'll do some research on this. No need to answer just saying I will be looking at those sorts of questions.

I spent the last 2 days maniacally refreshing Android message boards for news about the Incredible, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

No, actually, even worse -- I got no t-shirt!

Me too. Is this conference over now or does it go on till the end of the week? This is getting rediculous. I want Incredible info! That's great about the Supersonic, but I'm not switching to Sprint. Too many people that I know in my area have frequent dropped calls with them.

Have you considered waiting until the Desire hits other operators next month? You'll probably find better deals when there's more competition.

I'm doing that, but then I'm kind of forced to as my current contract isn't up until then either. :D

Orange isn't worth two shits and a damn, and Vodafone is an option... I might leave it a tiny bit, but considering what I can get for £15 a month it's going to be a difficult to find better deals. As internet and a free booster are included it's looking good.

Also, I think Voda is only 500mb of usage unless you're on an iPhone. Boo.

Vodafone, O2, Virgin are all getting it and likely to have reasonably priced plans. Even if you decide that Orange suck, if they have decent pricing it may bring in some competition.

Rogers does not release updates when they are available. We eventually get the updates months after our US neighbors are rolling with new firmware. My Magic was finally updated to 1.6 in February. Also, Cdn android marketplace does not offer paid apps as of yet...sucks so much. You will need to root your phone to gain access.

I just played with the HD2 yesterday and it looked pretty good even though the phone had a really cheap plastic screen protector on it. I was all about the AMOLED screen too but really...does it matter THAT much. It's almost like getting a 27'' tv with 1080p. It really doesn't make the experience that much better, if at all.....maybe not the best comparison but I think it works.

That's like saying IPS panels doesn't make viewing experience much better, if at all.... compared to TN panels.

Boo this man!

Well it definitely matters for the selling points, like super bright and clear visibility outside. As for inside, I mean, the colors and such on the screen look a million times better with blacker blacks and more vibrant pictures...is it a dealbreaker? No...but is it awesome and will it take more revolutionary things like this to pull me from my Droid? Yeah...the Evo 4G is the best phone ever, but it's the sum of many parts that make it great, and not too many of those parts make me scream "NEED IT NOW" except the big screen and front facing camera.

SimleuqiR said:
iPhone is still king in this department, but follow closely by HTC screens.

I don't really understand this business. If I just open a drawing app and do it myself the lines look so much straighter than the ones in the pics of the droid...?

Understandable. Maybe my situation is a bit different in the sense of what I'd be upgrading from. I'm on an Sprint HTC Touch Diamond right now with a custom rom. The phone is still great for me, really is and the screen on this thing is still sharp as hell imo. I'm just tired of the instability of some things in the OS and I'm not touching the first version of Windows 7 Series. They gimped it too much already so I won't be there until they get copy and paste going and allow my phone to act as a USB drive. So switching from 2.8" to 4.3", 3G to 4G, and WinMo 6.5 to Android 2.1. It's going to be a refreshing changing for me so the TFT screen is doable for me. I'd jump all over a 4G Desire on Sprint though if it were happening but I doubt it.

There's always the N1, if you're on Sprint. I don't think you can go wrong with anything snapdragon+2.1. The 2.1 ROM from Damagecontrol is insanely fast on my Hero. On Snapdragon, it must scream. So I think packaging is a big factor going forward. For me, I want Sense, 8MP, Snapdragon and AMOLED. 3 out of 4 ain't so bad.

Compared to a iPhone, Hero or myTouch, how bright is the screen on the HD2? If it can match the Hero's torch mode, then I'm fine with it. I never use that, and haven't had any real issues with visibility. My 3G iPhone had some issues since it didn't adjust brightness dynamically. But Android seems pretty smart about it. AMOLEDs must be amazing in comparison. PEACE.
