Do I....

Buy a contract-free Nexus One

Wait for T-Mobile to actually come out with a good second-gen Android Phone

Wait until I can get a Nexus One with a contract extension.

I'm impatient, I'm leaning to just jumping on the Nexus One. I think it's all the phone I will need for a long time.

With the jump to Android 2.2, The Nexus one just became pretty much the best Android handset out there. If you want to have first access to Gingerbread, well you know where to look.....

you probably arent going to see a big leap from the current top of the line hardware this year. I think that HTC will start making phones with 1.2ghz snapdragons (judging by their Phone 7 plans) by the end of the year... we should see intel driven phones early next year, but if you wait, you'll wait forever

If you don't mind $pending for it, then this. It's going to hold it's ground for a very long time. And being the first for updates is nice.

Plus it's hot and you can get things engraved on the back.

Wish it was on Verizon :/

Seems like the next big step is going to be when those phones with the GPU built in hit the market. Can't remember the name of the processor or chip but I've seen them mentioned.

And once you wait for phones with dedicated GPUs to arrive, you'll still have to wait for apps to arrive that will really take advantage of it.

Get a Nexus One.

Buy a Nexus One contract-free, great phone (except for the multitouch issue).

Is the multitouch issue something that's substantial in day to day use? If there wasn't an app that showed you how the input reacts as circles, would you notice it doing pinch to zoom or other functions?

I really wish I knew how to use ebay, no one I know wants to get it off my hands (for dirt cheap too...).

woah, really?

Yeah, was trying to help a couple of my friends that wanted an upgrade their old android phones (they have g1s lol). But money is a little tight for all of us I suppose. Pretty damn good discount if you ask me.

wow I'd jump at that!

Since this won't happen...what I want is a "vanilla" Android device on Verizon or ATT. Does such a thing exist and when?

I am contract free right now, and was leaning toward the Incredible, but I don't want Sense, I want to update to 2.2, and not wait around (like Eris...).

Can the Incredible be hacked and run with straight 2.1 or 2.2?

I'm pretty convinced this is phone will never break. I have dropped it 7 times, my Lab has got a hold of it 2 times and chewed the shit out of when I was in the shower or in the other room. The screen is still scratch less (it just has the bit marks on the top left hand side and in the back). Other then that, it runs great still :lol

Sorry guys, I really don't know how to use pay pall or ebay =\ Unless you live in Vegas, I'm not dealing with online sales etc (it's pretty ironic because I'm a total geek, but I'm clueless when it comes to selling shit online with ebay or paypall).

phones with GPUs have been on the market for some time now. i guess the one you're looking for are phones with GL ES 2.0 -compliant GPUs, and those have been out for sale too : )

iphone 3GS, palm pre/pixie, the new snapdragons @1GHz, etc - all featuring GL ES 2.0 GPUs (ie. capable of desktop-like graphics, just not at desktop performance levels).

apropos, the dell mini 5 apparently is now known as dell streak and is coming out in the UK - a nice mini-tablet of android device. might get myself one of those now that version 2.1 of android is said to be up to speed.

Dell Streak/Mini 5 is kind of a big deal. First tablet with the Android Market and the rest of Google's apps - lets hope it spreads to other tablets too, now that the doors are open.
PLEASE GOOGLE, LET NOTION INK PUT THEM ON THE ADAM PLEASE

Plus it's a tablet made by Dell, who is huge in the US. And it's running Android, of course. I think the sales of the Streak will really surprise Dell (who seem to have been extremely trepidatious with exposing/showing it off ever since it was first rumored.)

It's really easy, man. I'm betting you're gonna have to go through PayPal sooner or later, so I highly suggest you set up an account now and learn. It's really not very hard at all.

:lol Well I was just all kinds of wrong. I think the chip I was talking about is the Tegra? Something like that, I thought it had just been rumored to be in upcoming devices.

So did anyone else see the details on Android Community regarding the Shadow (Droid 2?)? It's just looking less and less impressive the more details that come out on it. For one thing, it's got a little bit better processor than the first Droid, but it's still only clocked at 720 Mhz. It's a 4.1" screen and an 8 MP camera (was rumored to be 12 MP at first and a 4.3" screen). I'm just wondering what Motorola is thinking in putting this out when it's already going out at a disadvantage hardware wise to the Incredible and EVO.

This isn't an iPhone - Marketplace isn't the only way to get apps onto an Android device. There are even other marketplaces out there. :) Does the Nook not support installation of other applications via adb or similar?

Loading apps falls into the realm of homebrew/ported apps. You can get hacked Facebook, Twitter and Pandora apps for it, but not much else.

The Dell Streak is an Android phone in everything but name, so its no surprise that it has marketplace access.

If you look at the Adam website, the 'Genesis' and 'Store' links point to it having its own app store with people having to develop just for it:

...though it could be possible if someone hacks the Adam like the Archos 5.

for the n1? The diverging points issue is not something i have ever encountered without actively trying to make it happen. That being said, with 2.1 there was some weirdness once in a while where the touchscreen would feel like it lost calibration, a screen lock/unlock fixed it... that and the soft buttons having to press the upper half... these two issues appear to have been remedied in 2.2 but we will have to wait for final word once the full release is sent out.

Sense can be disabled on the Desire, not sure about the Incredible.

Here is gsmarena's review of the Samsung Galaxy S. From the review they put it on top of the Android food chain.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-478.php

I'm avoiding all Samsung phones. Part of the advertising campaign for the Behold II was that they would upgrade the phone to 2.0+. Well, they pretty much abandoned that plan and users will be lucky if they get 1.6 in the near future. Especially with Android phone, I would stick with a company that have a history of supporting their phones with OS updates.

Man, I could definitely use a N1 for another dev phone... do you accept payment by snail mail? :lol

I dunno pal, I mean he's dropped it several times, his dog has had it, he appears to have replaced the trackball... and he won't sell through eBay or PapPal... both of which offer great insurance and security against faulty, damaged, lost, incorrectly described etc... goods. You're not telling me that there isn't a retail store in Vegas that buys phones/electronic goods!?

I missed the part about the dog getting hold of it, that's no good. Ah well, I was kidding anyway.

Gimmmick, what are the issues with the N1? I have a friend in LV. I'm sure he'd purchase it for me.
