Android Hardware Thread - 2010 Edition

Not open for further replies.
There was another thread somewhere (I cant find the link) that called batterybosses testing methods into question. Ill post it if I find it.

All I know is that my Seidio 1750 in my DI is great. It took a few charging cycles to really see but theres a definite difference. It might not be as drastic as some people lead you to believe (people claiming it doubled their life are full of shit) but there is a clear gain in life.

I wish the Dell Streak would come to Verizon.

I don't understand why manufacturers like to partner with AT&T at this point in the game. Sure, they have a lot of customers, but those customers have pretty much already made up their mind (there for iPhone or there for cheap phones) and their service and data has the reputation for being horrible.

Yet, Microsoft chooses them for Windows 7 Series launch...and then Dell chooses them for their Android debut.

Bring the Streak to Verizon, damnit. I'm not going back to AT&T, EVER.

AT&T is usually the choice because they use the most prolific GMS 3G bands, regardless of actual service.

850/1900 for eva

fake edit: also, it makes it easier for manufacturers to make devices for Canada, Central and South America

this, i won't go to Verizon until they move to LTE, they hurt themselves by being different from a large portion of the world... ATT wouldn't get half the devices it gets if it werent for them using GSM

I'm trying to help my coworkers shop for an Android phone. They'd 1) Prefer to stay on Sprint, because it's cheaper, and 2) They'd prefer to buy phones that are 99 or less. In other words, they aren't splurging.

I'd like to help him find a good phone, and in particular, one that actually has as up to date an Android as possible. Are there any 99 dollar phones running 2.1? Or that will be running it soon? Preferrably on Sprint?

Or, if that isn't the case -- what's the best available option given these limitations? Thanks.

The Hero and Moment both have 2.1. Neither should be over $100.

Those are the only Android phones on Sprint besides the upcoming Evo which is $199.

Kinda strange to me the Moment has 2.1 but not the Behold II, even though they promised it and there's a big backlash going on now... Maybe Sprint did some arm-wrangling? Which is strange since they're not even doing OTA updates... Then again, Behold II has TouchWiz, but the initial version didn't look so different from stock.

Well, the more Android handsets that get updated the better.

Okay, so the MyTouch Slide looks like it'll fit my needs until the Nexus Slide or whatever comes out,..

It's going to be in the first batch of phones that gets 2.2, too. Anyone know if it's been rooted?

Is there a way to get Android on an HTC HD2?

Yeah.

Interesting.. there doesn't seem to be an official thread for HTC Desire, so I guess I'll just post it here:

I'll be getting myself a HTC Desire to replace my iPhone 3g in a few weeks, and I was having a look around for screen protectors.. are there any recommendations?

Here is one i've been looking at, http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/htc-desire-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php

are there any other recommendations? it doesn't have to cover the full phone like the invisible shield - so this could be for any phone of the same screen size

Speaking of the Desire, looks like it might finally be hitting Canada under a different name

telus-htc-desire.jpg

This picture is fueling rumours that the Telus phone to be released called 'Triumph' is actually just a rename of the Desire (similar to the renaming of Droid to Milestone). If that's the case, I might finally jump in - as my sister works at Telus, she can get me a good deal, and it's rumoured to be releasing below $200 on a 3 year plan retail.

So Canadians waiting out for a Nexus One like phone under a contract, this is probably something to keep an ear/eye out for.

The Streak fits in your pocket unless you wear those skinny jeans.
Everyone forgets what phones used to look like. I had one of those old nokias that was the size of a thick remote, and I kept that in my pockets all the time. Modern smartphones are tiny in comparison. I don't wear tight clothes, so I'm looking forward to getting my Evo. PEACE.

You can get both the Moment and the Hero for $0.01 through amazon with a new 2 year contract with sprint.

Is there any more news on whether or not the HTC Legend will be coming to the states? There was an announcement back in February that it would be coming to Sprint, but has there been any news since?

With Froyo inbound and the rumors that the Shadow will be AAA spec'd and the Droid2 not so much, I'm not too sure what the benefit will be in upgrading. Doesn't seem to be much new styling from that pic, either.

The Froyo speed boost might be enough for me. Snapdragon or bust.

Does Froyo do anything to improve the general choppiness of the Android UI? That's one thing i've noticed about Android (from videos i've seen) that really annoys me.

There is no constant choppiness on my Droid.

So I held a dummy Evo phone in my hand today. It's fucking small imo and can EASILY fit in the pocket. Anyone who says its "huge" or "too big" must have small lady hands. :|

June 4th.

Well, the home screen switching could be snappier but otherwise...I agree.

Either way there is Launcher Pro which solves even that. :)

Where is it said/rumored that Shadow will be the AAA over the Droid 2? Hmm...I was hoping it was going to be the other way around.

Homescreen swiping isn't choppy, its smooth, just not fast and spring loaded like Launcher Pro. On the other hand the app drawer can be choppy when it slides up.

Another question for those who own a Desire:

Does it get hot for you after about 40-60mins of use? I've been reading from a few select forum posts elsewhere that it does.. though it is not brought up enough for me to think it is a common issue - but is it?

If I'm looking to get an Android device should I go with the Nexus or does T-Mobile have something close on the horizon? I ask because I don't really make calls that often so I want to stick with T-Mobile's prepaid plan but I do like shiny gadgets and these phones are very shiny. T-Mobile's current phones are, sadly, less than stellar in the looks department.

Also considering Droid Incredible even if Verizon's prepaid plan is a lot less cost effective as T-Mobile's.

I don't think Verizon anything is cost effective compared to T-Mo.

The Nexus One is probably your best bet for prepaid, but apparently there's some super phone Sidekick coming out.

You can't use the Incredible on a Verizon prepaid plan so that should make your decision easier :D

I upgraded my phone to a HTC Desire last week. Absolutely loving it. Spent sooooo much time late at night with Google SkyMap.

Man, I'm tempted to sell my Droid Eris to get a Droid Incredible...will my insurance plan still carry over to my new phone, or... ?

Insurance from the carrier should roll over just fine. You could always call after the swap to make sure, but with Sprint it always carried over.

Fffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuu

Man, people who don't live their lives on their cell phones deserve shiny stuff too!

Unfortunately T-Mobile is the only carrier in the US who brings the European cell phone strategy to this country, and again, unfortunately, they have shit for coverage in the Midwest :( I'd love to support them.

It makes sense for it to be Droid ____, since Verizons going to be promoting it and it's a high spec'd device. That seems to be what gives you the Droid branding nowadays.

I thought it would be Droid Shadow. Droid Xtreme is a little cheesy. I don't get why Droid2 (or whatever it ends up called) is going to be medium spec'd. From the rumors, it really seems like a horizontal upgrade and not a step up.

I don't care what they call it, Droid "X", Droid Shadow, Droid Shadow Xtreme, I just want it released was away in Europe for 3 weeks and finally back and still no release date on it, would get the Incredible but might as well continue the wait :lol

I know it's not an Android handset but we recently received stock of the Samsung Wave featuring the new Super Amoled screen which will also be used in the Galaxy S. It's absolutely beautiful on the 3.3 inch screen (The Galaxy S will be 4"). Also the 'Touchwiz UI' is present on Bada and will look pretty much the same on the Galaxy S and it's not bad actually. Scrolling is super smooth, there are some nice transitions, the touch screen is really responsive and it's really quite easy to use - probably more intuitive than Sense. For anyone coming from an iPhone they'll find Touchwiz + Android is not a million miles away from the Apple OS. The 720p video clarity is absolutely superb too. All of which leads me to believe it'll be nearly the perfect handset with only one major flaw - No flash on the camera!! Why Samsung, why?? The music player has a cover flow thingy too, which should it come over to Android should be pretty cool.

Here's a pretty in depth review from GSM arena:

Are there any other Android phones coming to Sprint? I don't need a beast phone like the EVO.

I heard the Moment2 is coming soon.

Right now? Nothing really unfortunately. I really wish the Nexus One had come to CDMA carriers. :/

What's the point of it? Seems too big to use as a phone.

Also I'll probably get an Android phone in August. Should I go for the HTC Wildfire, or the HTC Desire?

It's a tablet first, phone second. And by that logic, the HD2 and EVO are to big to be used as phones as well
