Two steps forward, two steps back. No search button is insta-fail. Voice search > *. No question, no contest. I abuse the hell out of that feature. Menu is also an important button. I hope they've put those buttons on the sides. PEACE.

You hold down on the menu button (bottom left) on the left to search......

Ok, now I've been using Galaxy S for a couple of days now, and it's nothing short of amazing. Used the mobile hotspot feature today and it worked without a hitch. The screen is amazing, ladies and gentlemen. Watching .mkvs is a sight to behold. Also currently posting this using Swype on the phone. Low light pics turned out pretty good too, although I wish it had a flash. I don't get why people are hating on Samsung so much..

I said wow. As I said in the comments, at the rate that handhelds are evolving, we might not see consoles very much longer. Dreamcast+ level graphics being output at 1080p from a handheld is just amazing. All the sweeter it runs Android.

Full specs:

  • Samsung S5PC110 Cortex-A8 1Ghz with 512KB L2 cache
  • 3D Accelerator SGX540(up to 20M triangles/s and 1000M pixels/s)
  • 512MB Mobile DDR 400Mega data rate

  • 3.5inch 480 x 320 (capacitive touch)
  • 1080p video playback via HDMI cable

  • WiFi/Bluetooth

  • Android2.1
  • Geo magnetic field sensor
  • Accelerometer

Also, small disclaimer, I've become involved in the ODROID/Hard Kernel community, with the hope of contributing to the source code... eventually.

Would be nice to get one of them, though. The originals are all sold out.

Yeah, that's pretty impressive from a hardware standpoint.

I really hope they announce a release date for the Droid X (or Shadow or Xtreme) soon. I'm eligible for my 12 month upgrade next Friday, I hate my phone, and I'm getting impatient. It's this or an Incredible, but I think I'm leaning towards the X.

Uh, holy shit. So like, not even an hour after that post I got an e-mail... Dunno if I should talk about this just yet, but...

They want to send me a free ODROID-T or ODROID-S for the small amount of work I did on their forum.

I can... barely think... breathe...
Is it ironic or tragic my first Android device won't have Google's apps?
Then again, they could be punking me. Keeping hype low.

I think its more ironic that this is your first Android device.

You don't have an Android device?????

Megaton. Now I wonder if Tobor has ever owned an iPhone or iPad. This world is upside down! :lol

Are you fucking kidding me Andrex? :lol

Wow, that just really came out of left field.

You know what is sad about all of this? The nexus one was released lit. 2 months after the droid :lol (it was pretty much the first cell that led the push for snapdragon processors in current smartphones in 2010). Basically the nexus one was pretty much the blue print standard of what all powerhouse android devices would be compared against this year.

Isnt' the galaxy S capable of 90 M triangles due to the humming bird processor? I love my Galaxy S

Nope, tell that to the phone that I am holding in my hands now hahaha.

Not doubting you (maybe I am >.>), but how could you tell something like that? Ignoring spec sheets and stuff.

It says that in the manual? other than a tear down, the only other proof is the videos of the Galaxy S outdoing all other android phones gpu

Huh. That's neat then.

But the Phandroid article says they're both using the same CPU (Samsung S5PC110) and GPU (PowerVR SGX540.) This, combined with the lower res, would make me believe the ODROID-S (hrm, maybe the -S comes from the Galaxy S...) could match or outperform it.

Then again I'm about half-clueless when it comes to nitty gritty tech specs like this. It could be the fact the ODROID-S is using a Cortex A8 while the Galaxy S is using... something better. Dunno how it all fits together, all told. :lol

Well whatever it is, at least you are getting a free android phone, grats on that. No easy feat.

It's actually not a phone. :lol Although someone was able to make a call on it, or so I heard. It's a dedicated Android game/media-player. Which is why I was so interested in it originally, actually. There's not enough of those.

That looks awesome. What is the type of screen on it though? The only thing that I dislike is with manufacturer skins it makes it longer to wait for updates.
Longer than what though? the Droid is stock Android and it still took over 2 months to get Android 2.1.

Man those pictures are hot, I really hope this comes out in early July like rumored.

I don't get it. These superphones are made for nerds. NERDS DONT WANT MOTOBLUR. If we have to have delayed updates, then Sense is worth it. Motoblur or Touchwiz or LG's "just enough changes to fuck up update schedules" UI? No hell no.

no front facing camera? failed

+1

They should have delayed this thing and shoved a camera in there someway, somehow. It's gorgeous though.

Even if the stock Droid took 2 months, its going to take longer for Motorola too update Blur and then push out the update. I suppose you can always root, but you never know when that is going to be completed after the phone is released.

4.3" screen with all that bezel space? Probably going to be quite a bit bigger in person than it looks in the photos.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing it might be 4.1" like originally rumored.

There was also a hardware revision but dunno what they changed but there are also rumors of a front facing camera.

So i'm tired of my blackberry tour and was going to get an Droid Incredible but since they aren't in stock currently I was wondering if i should wait for another android phone instead, what do you think android-gaf anything better in the pipeline to hold off for?

You're looking at it up above a few posts. That and the Droid 2 seem to be the next big ones coming out, both on Verizon (they really are kicking ass with Android lately...)

How good is Neocore as a benchmark nowadays for 3D graphics? Because I was browsing the market and saw that someone commented that it ran at 44.6fps on a Droid X(treme?).

Is it too much to ask for a phone with a 1 ghz cpu, 1 gb internal storage, an AMOLED display, and a QWERTY keyboard?

From Sony to Apple, companies have an ear to the internet and consumers in general. Hopefully if enough people bitch, they'll be a stock Super Amoled, Hummingbird, front facing camera Samsung phone with Stock Android in the pipeline. They obviously won't drop Touchwiz, but an option for Androiders who know better would be nice.

That would also fix the update annoyance. Touchwiz phones could run their nonsense and people would pretty much know that those models would be in update hell. Samsung could only worry about a model or two for upgrading.

HVGA is preferable for games. Google Android developer advocate and games programmer Chris Pruett agrees:

Chris Pruett said:
But the reason that the ODROID is the best device for playing Replica Island isn't just because of the game-like form factor and controls. Unlike most other Android devices, the ODROID is a combination of fast CPU and medium resolution screen. The devices with larger screens tend to be fill-rate bound; though the Nexus One and Droid have extremely capable CPUs and GPUs, the high resolution screens on those devices work against them when it comes to games (it's almost impossible to break 30 fps on those devices via the GPU, though they can crunch really complex scenes at that speed without breaking a sweat). On the other hand, the Magic/Dream class of devices have the same HVGA resolution, but tend to be CPU bound--rendering is fast but I spend quite a lot of time running the game simulation. The ODROID has neither problem--its CPU is pretty fast and its GPU has no problem filling the HVGA display. As a result, Replica Island is silky smooth on the ODROD--a constant, reliable 60fps. Add that to the game-ready control scheme and you have a pretty great game experience.

I don't know if that has anything to do with the recent EVO/Nexus One 30fps complaints, however it's definitely true for games. You'll never see games crack 30fps on those phones, while the ODROID (and other similarly-spec'd HVGA devices) can handle them with ease. For stuff like web browsing, yeah, more pixels is definitely better. But I think they made the right choice making it HVGA for now.

If Sony is staying in the handheld market, it would be wise of them to make a PSP2 that is a Playstation phone and use Android. Then merge their PSN store with Market somehow. PEACE.

that would mean it's not backward compatible with previous pspgames
