Android Hardware Thread - 2010 Edition

Guess we should have expected it after this statement from them: http://community.developer.motorola...s-Android-Handsets/bc-p/4290#M432title=Custom

We understand there is a community of developers interested in going beyond Android application development and experimenting with Android system development and re-flashing phones. For these developers, we highly recommend obtaining either a Google ADP1 developer phone or a Nexus One, both of which are intended for these purposes. At this time, Motorola Android-based handsets are intended for use by consumers and Android application developers, and we have currently chosen not to go into the business of providing fully unlocked developer phones.

One of the biggest reasons I rooted my droid was for the 1ghz processor... but still, the option to root or hack the phone would have been nice. :/

Have you people learned nothing about the modding community?

The Boot Rom eFuse will probably be emulated in which a custom rom will be loaded and tell the firmware that it's "cool brah". I mean seriously, I can't believe some of you think this is going to stop what cannot be stopped.

I'm sure several phones will be bricked but for a good cause.

Exactly, if anything this is just going to further provoke the modding community.

:lol Between this self-imploding Droid X nonsense and their ridiculous Cliq debacle, I'm beginning to wonder if Motorola really has any idea why people are interested in their products.

Motorola - grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory.

It seems they don't realize that that interest is only because of Android.

Makes no sense.

So very true.

Mobile tech providers like Apple or HTC, regardless of what you might think of their offerings, at least seems aligned with and have some general understanding of what their customers' wants and needs are, and know how to react to and interact with it.

And then there are some others...:lol

This is the same company that tried to make half-a-dozen spin-offs of the RAZR and mired itself in mediocrity for the better part of a decade.

Then they were successful with the DROID, and now...we see where they're going.

Well Apple did try to make jailbreaking illegal... :D

eh fuck it, just getting a new POS Storm and waiting to upgrade.

Apparently Droid X disapoints.
The eFuse thing might have been blown out of proportion, if that's what you're worried about.

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...-the-droid-x-may-not-lead-to-a-bricked-phone/

The current theory being put forth by the non-alarmists in the Android hacking community suggests that the DROID X is locked in a similar manner to the Milestone. Though it may be difficult to crack, and may lead to many hairs being pulled out, mucking with the bootloader probably won’t brick your phone.

My upgrade is up for my Storm (yuck, i know) in 1 month and I'm totally confused which new droid phone (X, incredible, droid2) to upgrade to... anyone got a link or information on advantages/disadvantages of the 3 i listed?

I was really looking forward to the Droid X, as my upgrade is available August 1st and I've been eying the Droid for a while. I currently have a Samsung Omnia running a flashed Win Mobile 6.5 with HTC sense UI. The phone is alright, but WinMo is clunky and this phone has seriously degraded with time, like the software is falling apart. The camera is great, though.

ANYWAY, I want to upgrade to an Android phone (Verizon), DroidX looked awesome.

Gizmodo reviewed it and reemed it, basically saying the hardware was awesome, software was complete garbage. Thoughts? Reactions?

My condolences. BTW, how did you get sense on it? I have it on mine as an SBP Shell skin. Not really the same thing.

Is there any Android phone that supports panoramic camera shots? My HTC Touch Pro can do it so I find it odd that I haven't read about an Android phone that could do it.

An Desire HD is rumored, and specs have been leaked:

We didn't have a ton of details on the so-called HTC Ace when it turned up in a leaked roadmap last week, but a fresh set of rumors are now suggesting that the Ace is actually the Desire HD, which will reportedly pack a number of HD-esque upgrades over the standard Desire. That includes a larger 4.3-inch WVGA screen -- no word if it's AMOLED or SLCD -- and a 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. Other rumored details include Android 2.2, 4GB of internal storage, the same 1GHz Snapdragon as the current Desire and, perhaps most interestingly, talk of a "unibody aluminum design." Unfortunately, the rumors still don't include any actual images of the device, but there's still plenty of time for those to leak out before the supposed October release.

Seems really silly considering the software is just some widgets you can turn off and download a home launcher replacement to hide it completely I believe.

The Droid X can do this.

Well, they were rooted, so... custom ROMs ^^ (maybe in the future?)

EDIT: Oh, there already is a custom ROM for it, just not with froyo.

You're still missing things like a camera flash and any sort of trackball/pad

The SuperAMOLED looks nice, but other phones will have ti later. It's not worth sticking yourself with a phone that's going to get zero support just because it's out right now.

Poor phrasing on my part. Mine is also an SBP shell skin. Sorry for the confusion.

I was just looking around, I see the Droid 2 is coming out mid-August and will be running Android 2.2. I think I will be buying this because I really want a physical keyboard after this god damned Omnia.

How do you like it so far?

It's great, installed Launcher Pro and it is even better than the stock UI.

Only issue is I have what appears to be 2 dead pixels, so i'll have to have Best Buy order me a replacement.

Are there any special upgrade deals for Moto Droid owners to the droid x?

I have a two year plan and I started in early November so I don't think it will matter for me anyway. But I am just wondering.

I got an Email saying I could upgrade for $199 and a new contract. I also renewed last November. Going to stop by a Verizon store to morrow and take a look at it, might upgrade.

Just a followup I was NOT able to renew so early for $199.99 the offer was for the 2nd line phone we have, forgot it hasn't been upgrade din a while. Oh well. That little hump where the camera was woudl annoy me anyways. I'll see whats out there in November for my early Upgrade when it does come around.

i had to bring in my omnia to a verizon store just to finally get the touchscreen to work properly. i still have issues with characters located on the edge of the screen.

almost bought an incredible...

Just got the samsung vibrant on tmobile. This screen is gorgeous in person. I think I must have been the only person in my area to get the phone. There were zero ads for it at the store.

I'm liking it so far. No lag. Call quality fine. Reception good. swype is the default keyboard on it. It has a bit if a learning curve but I'm sticking with it. It's fun sliding around for typing.

I almost didn't get the phone because we all know there's something better on the horizon...(and samsung support on phones hasn't been great) but hey....there's always something better coming out for phones every month. Since a variant of this phone is being released for all carriers, I feel like samsung will show more support.

I just hope the droid 2 doesnt have the same problemo.

If it's running anything but stock Android (which I think it isn't), then there's a better shot I guess, being the "sequel" to the Droid and all. But unfortunately I think Moto was working hard on the other aspects of the Droid before release and let it slip out, then they corrected it with the Milestone. It's probably and depressingly going to become the status quo for Moto smartphones from this point forward unless the backlash grows to insane proportions.

Some one pissed in his Cheerios today. To get rid of the Motorola widgets it takes about 1 minute. That he so harshly criticized the phone for something that can be rectified in the same amount of time it takes to walk to the garbage can and throw out the little plastic bags that cover the USB cable and adapter is supremely stupid. It just took me that 1 minute to remove the handful of Motorola widgets that I didn't want to keep. And now I will never have to deal with them again. The camera can be slow to open, and the pictures it takes could be a little better. It's taken about 2-3 seconds to open for me, and you know you've triggered it to open when the phone vibrates slightly after pressing the button, which you have to press down all the way, past the halfway point for focusing. I've only had mine for a few hours now, but so far I have really enjoyed it.

Ah, well that's too bad, I feel like I just got my droid anyway, so I will be fine :lol
