Great phone, the best on Verizon IMO as it's just the right form factor, especially with you coming from an iPhone. HTC has great Exchange support in Sense from what I've read (it's even better than stock Android, although this is less true on Android 2.2 if I remember right) so I think you should be totally covered there.

Any of you Samsung Captivate people out there wanna give me some more impressions?

I'm EXTREMELY interested in this phone, but I've seen mixed opinions from what I've read.

My dad got the phone yesterday. It isn't bad and I am considering trading my iphone4 for it. There are a few things that worry or frustrate me though - what little time I have played with it.

I took about 20 seconds of HD video with it and it will not send it via text message. It says it is too big. The iPhone4 will resize it and send video with out a problem. Also we sent a video to the phone from mine and it just says "downloading" - but never does anything.

Aside from that the screen is fuck awesome and the app store looks similar if not better than the iphone one. The google nav and google star maps look awesome and are contributing to me getting on. I wish I could find a place to confirm if the screen is glass or if the camera is covered with glass. The camera is a big sub par compared to the iPhone but the differences are soo small it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the reply dude... though that just confirms my mixed opinions...

Also a big WTF to not having flash on the camera...

UGH... I think I'll pass cause I'm just not sure which means if I'm not totally sold I should just wait it out till the next thing that comes along...

Ok, I got my new Samsung Captivate from UPS just a little bit ago. Here are some of my initial impressions. I'll try and post more later once I've used it a bit...

  • The phone feels great. It is just the slightest bit bigger (longer) than my old iPhone 3G, but actually feels a bit thinner. I don't know if it actually is, but it feels that way. The metal cover on the back feels great as well, and has a nice grippy metal texture.
  • The S-AMOLED screen is absolutely amazing. You can't tell where the screen ends and the frame starts because the blacks are so dark. The colors are fantastic as well. Lots of great saturation and detail. Very, VERY impressive. Sure, it isn't quite as high-res as the new iPhone 4 screen, but it looks amazing to me.
  • Samsung "All Share" is great. I got a new Samsung LCD TV a few months ago, and this feature works great with this phone. You can play media right off the phone, while using the phone as a remote. I won't use this a TON, but it is very neat.
  • After using an iPhone for a few years now, getting to grips with the mountain of customization available with Android is fantastic, if not sort of intimidating at first. I love having more settings rather than not enough though, so it will be very welcome getting used to it. The power available is great.
  • I've barely dug through the Market, but I've already found most of the main apps that I used to us on my old iPhone. I'm not that concerned with which one has the bigger app store, or any of that, because I only really use about 5-10 apps on any kind of regular basis, and both will have them. So, that is nice, and will make the transition very easy.
That is about it so far. I've only been playing with it for a couple hours now, but I plan on messing with it the rest of then evening after I get back from dinner. So far though, everything is great, and I'm super excited about both the phone and Android.

That's still a lot of money for a phone. The HTC Legend + tax + unlocking would have been ~$400, something i'm more comfortable with. Any other options or any plans for an AWS Legend?

You can try to import the Motorola XT720, but there are conflicting reports as to the actual specs of the device. It does use the TI processor variant, so it should be faster. Alternatively, the new Samsung is decent too.

We're going to have to wait a while for a good AWS Android, I think. Judging by how T-Mo got the initial batch of N1s, we may have to wait for Project Emerald or some other unannounced device to come up.

Awesome post, happy you're digging the phone and Android.

Most apps are available for ANdroid that you'd find on iPhone...or apps that lack the brand name but accomplish the task. There are also a ton of "function" apps, like Awesome Drop (where you can drop a file onto a website in your browser and have it transfer over the air to your phone over 3G or wifi), Launcher Pro Beta (home replacement app) or even something like Status Notes (put reminder notes in the notification pane). Drop by the software/app thread to get some recommendations or for questions, it can be intimidating.

I really want to play with a Galaxy S phone. My brother hated on it for a million and one reasons but tried it out in the mall and texted me saying he was amazed at how nice and light it was, that the screen was gorgeous and Avatar looked shockingly beautiful on it.

A little jealous!

I was due my NE2 for 2 years, waiting for that perfect phone. Then the Incredible came along. Loving every minute of it.

Why did I choose it? Form-factor + performance.

The OTA (over-the-air) update to Froyo (Android 2.2) is coming in 2-3 weeks! Not many phones have officially been updated to 2.2. Awesomeness!

Any news/rumors on a new HTC phone by the end of the year? I love the look/feel of the Incredible but the short battery life is deal breaker.

Thanks.

I thought the screen was better looking also and very hard to tell if was a bit lower res. Can you tell what the screen is as far as materials? Plastic or glass?

If you're willing to root you can install an undervolted kernel. It's helped out a lot on my phone and I'm only using the stock battery.

Few hardware questions :D

Is it possible to root the Droid X?

How easy is it, and can I screw it up and brick my phone?

What are the benefits of doing so?

Thanks

Yea, these things are really quite amazing. I have a friend with an iPhone 4, and have played with it a little. Compared to my old iPhone 3G, which was decently fast when new, but got progressively slower with every software update, the new iPhone 4 was just light years faster and snappier. But this Samsung phone feels every bit as snappy. And from what I've read, the Galaxy S phones have an even better GPU in them, so that will be nice as well when I get around to getting some games. But, every swipe, slide, pinch or zoom is just super precise and very responsive. I like that, because once I put iOS4 on my 3G, the thing was practically unusable.

But really, the screen is the single most awesome thing on this so far. Android is great, and I'm really starting to get the hang of it, and really enjoy it. But DAMN this screen is just awesome. I copied a few different movies over, to see what it could play, and how things looked. Spectacular is the only way I can think to describe it. In regards to colors, black level and brightness, it blows away every phone I've ever used, personally. Like I said, the iPhone 4 does have more resolution, and that is nice. But even at a lowly 800x480 this screen looks terrific. And at the normal length I hold a phone, I can't see the pixels anyway, so the extra resolution of the iPhone isn't that important to me.

Even in tons of light, it was easily readable. I've seen a few older OLED screens, and sunlight is obviously their one weakness. I'm not going to go all the way and say it is totally fixed with this new S-AMOLED version, but it is as good as I would expect. My old iPhone 3G was somewhat washed-out and hard to read in bright daylight, and this seemed no worse, and possibly better. So, I'm very happy about that. It was one of my main concerns before getting the phone, but now after using it, I see no issues.

I think it is glass, but I don't know for sure. In my fully unscientific "Finger Flick" test, it makes almost the exact same sound when you tap on it as my iPhone 3G's glass screen. No clue what that means in regards to actual construction, but it feels very solid and could easily be glass. So, take that for what you will.

I think I'm going to get the Captivate tomorrow. I've been trying to get onto the android bandwagon for a while now, but I'm on a family plan with my parents.

if it isn't glass it is the hardest plastic in the world. (I also got my captivate today...)

I went on the corner and took a key and tried to scratch it. Not a mark...so basically my proof test was done, no need for a screen protector.

Phone is farkin awesome. I even like touchwiz OK. All I know is Android is some kind of revelation for me.

It is like the slickness (except moreso with live wallpapers, widgets, etc) than an iphone, but more open than Symbian. I was linked into my home PC playing files right off the computer in no time...could even control the PC. Playing divx on the phone right out of the box. Media player interface is really slick looking...not quite coverflow but really damn impressive, better I think than the newer Zune.

A couple clicks and I have facebook, gmail, google contact all linked...photos from facebook are the contact photos (can be changed).

I could go on and on at the awesomeness.

Hopefully it works well as a phone, etc. It was funny I took it out of the box and played with it 2 hours straight.

The last few reply messages I have posted have been from my iPhone 4 and it's a pain in the ass. I am sold on the captivate and swapping tomorrow. Does the browser make it easier to browse the site? Also and word on how to get froyo on the captivate or when samsung is releasing it?

Do you have the Neogaf app from the app store?

Any word on how the Captivate's GPS is? Apparently the early European Galaxy S phones had busted GPS functionality. Did they fix it with the Captivate?
When we were heading home from dinner tonight, I had Google Maps navigate us home. It took about 5 seconds for it to locate us, and it had a very precise, hard lock on us the entire way home. Worked well for me, but that was my only time using it so I can't say for sure. Seemed fine, though that's just my anecdotal example.

From an iPhone? The Android experience is basically the same, though a little worse since you can't click the top of the page to automatically scroll up. With Android, you have to hit that bar on the bottom to jump up.

I just found out when u click on a pic on secondapps, using DolphinHD, it doesn't open a new window like the iPhone instead a small pop-up window within the page shows up. pretty neat

The screen is tempered glass, I believe both the Wave and Galaxy S/Captivate/Vibrant use the same Super AMOLED screen build materials. If you take a look on youtube or google you can find a Korean website testing the screen. The only thing that made a scratch/dent was a wallpaper knife or being dropped from head height onto tarmac. It survived being scratched by a screw and being put in a bag with various sharp objects and juggled about.

edit: as for froyo, the Korean Galaxy is getting Froyo in "August", no mention on the rest of the world but hopefully it won't be far behind.

Well, my Samsung Galaxy S should be arriving tomorrow! :D

Phoned Orange to request a PAC code as I was pretty sure they wouldn't match the deal I found, then they came back with 400 mins, unlimited text + Internet (500mb) + Handset Insurance for £26 a month. The insurance clinched the deal.

I'll post up some impressions and pics tomorrow hopefully.

All aboard the Android Express! *Whoo Whoooooo*

What's your typical battery life like? I found out my phone wasn't actually going to sleep, it's a software issue that HTC is supposed to eventually fix in an update.

Anyway, I found that for whatever reason, if Wifi is on, the phone will actually sleep. I was getting much better life out of it after that. Then I rooted it, and undervolted it.

I've only had the undervolted kernel for a couple days, but with moderate use I was seeing near 20hrs before I got the low battery warning. Unless I'm using it non-stop, I can't see it lasting less than 10-12hrs with good use.

Also, the battery from the HTC Touch Pro2 will fit, and is 1500mah, I was thinking of picking one of these up from amazon, you can find them for ~15$.

Mine managed to sync inside about 3 feet from a window...so actually pretty great.

BUT...only after I did this fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728611

My other problem was that the micro usb didn't seem secure. I was about ready to return to see if I had a defect...then I noticed the cover had to be pulled over a bit further to a definite click...now it it is fine.

So far everything seems perfect, except I need to check signal strength. I will try a slacker radio stream on my way to work and see if it holds. Around the house it seems like the strength has been a bit more variable and lower than my Nokia N79. No surprise, that phone had amazing reception to the point I had no issues even in NYC.

I think I'm still gonna wait it out. I'm on AT&T and really want a new smart phone with a hardware keyboard to hit that isn't some busted as shit like the moto backflip. :lol

The Incredible has much, much better battery life than that chart implies. The fucking charge bug (that requires you to jump through a few hoops to get it to 100%) better be fixed in the OTA/Froyo update though, since not many people realize it.

Properly charged, I get over 24 hours with light-moderate use (on wifi a lot).

Did anyone announce a slider like the Palm Pre or Dell Lightning? My next phone should have a hardware keyboard, but I don't want a slider like the Droid.

Are you talking about having to charge the last 10% while the phone is off?

Yeah, kinda... You literally have to charge it while it's on, then charge it while it's off, then turn it on and off, then charge more, then turn it on and use it. HTC even confirmed it, though doesn't seem to work for everyone.

I just do like half of that and it improves it quite a bit as does charging it while it's off. I'm quite sure it's high on their list of fixes when that update comes out.

That's crazy, I noticed on my own that If I turn the phone off after the light is green, it'll sometimes charge a bit more. I had no idea it still wasn't charging all the way, unless you go through that little process.

Edit: I installed Juiceplotter, it's an app that graphs your battery percentage over time.

The it went from "100%" to 93% in about an hour. Then for about the last 40 minutes or so, it's flatlined at 93%. It's been idle most of the time with the screen off, other than a few seconds when I would check the battery and/or answer some text messages, check email.

So it's obvious it didn't really charge up to 100%, I'll have to try that little trick next time, thanks for the info.

Fuck me. So I went into an AT&T just a bit ago as there is one right next to the Moe's where my GF and I were going to eat at. She knew I was thinking about phones, and agreed to hop in there for a sec.

Gosh the screen on the Captivate is FUCK'N BALL'N! Like x 100 ball'n. No hardware keyboard sucks, but gosh dang the phone was soooo slim and the screen was so big, and looked GORGEOUS! Ugh it makes me want to order one now. :(

Hooooly shit, what a nice phone

Dude the screen on that thing is outrageously good. It might not be as high res at the iPhone 4 or have as good of ration pixel to screen size, but the display itself was OMFG Spooge worthy!

I had the same reaction to the droid X's screen. I realize its not as high res as iphone 4 but god damn if it didn't look stunning.

It's funny but when I got my Droid X in the mail I said to myself "Jesus, this is huge!" but now almost a week later I don't think I could go any smaller now. :D

It's definitely a sweet spot and the thin form factor definitely helps.

Yeah I agree! I've been having a hard time putting it down.

Galaxy S is in my hands.... awww yeah!

Just gotta wait for the darn thing to charge up. Boo!

Initial impressions:
-Boots up quick, my gf's Hero takes a few minutes to become useable. Not here!
-THE SCREEN
-Speaker seems pretty decent, reviews led me to believe it was poor, I'd say it trumps my Nokia 5800 no problem.
-THE SCREEN
-Amazed at how thin and nasty the plastic back is. Would it really have eaten into Samsung's margin to use something just that little bit thicker? Need a vinyl sticker for the back, just hope that they become available at some point.
-THE SCREEN

Oooh, I'm going to have a fun evening of geeking out over this. My girlfriend.... bah, she has her tv to keep her company! :D

Thinking about getting Galaxy S/Captivate but I notice they have connection problems with their desktop software (kies) if used on Win7-64Bit.
Anyone know if this has been fixed?

For those with the Galaxy S, what do you think of TouchWiz? The SAMOLED looks great, but the UI looks clunky.

Also is the battery life good?

I don't think it really gets in the way of things to be honest. The only android handsets I've used are HTC, so I'm used to Sense, but there isn't a heck of a lot of difference. Its nothing like TouchWiz on Samsung sets of old, in fact they may as well call it "iPhone Interface". The only difference I can see is the 4 little shortcuts at the bottom of the screen, apps are listed horizontally, not vertically, and they've added a (admittedly handy) little shortcut to wifi/bluetooth/silent/vibrate settings on the notifications bar.

The unlock screen is a bit annoying mind, would prefer stock or Sense.

Touchwiz becomes much better w/ a home replacement like ADW Launcher..

it still invades a few areas of the Os like contacts, etc.. but I actually like their contacts app better than the stock one..

Phone is very fast.. especially with games.. screen is gorgeous as has been reported.. no real issues with the device.. but the battery seems to drain faster than my last android device (moto droid).
