Touchwiz becomes much better w/ a home replacement like ADW Launcher..

it still invades a few areas of the Os like contacts, etc.. but I actually like their contacts app better than the stock one..

Phone is very fast.. especially with games.. screen is gorgeous as has been reported.. no real issues with the device.. but the battery seems to drain faster than my last android device (moto droid).

Have you tried to mess with the brightness to see how much that helps? I figure this phones big ass screen probably sucks the battery dry real fast with the brightness cranked!

For those with the Galaxy S, what do you think of TouchWiz? The SAMOLED looks great, but the UI looks clunky.

Also is the battery life good?
The UI of my Captivate is fine. I don't know what the old TouchWiz was like, but this current version on the Galaxy S phones seem fine to me. I come from many years of iPhone use, and it seems very similar. I added "Fancy Widgets" and "LauncherPro" and the phone is great. I'm still learning all the tricks and stuff with Android, but I've found the UI to be perfectly usable.

Battery life seems fine to me. I don't use my phone a TON during the day, but I can easily make it through a whole day on a charge. That is all I need, so it works fine for me. If you're a heavy user, you might not find that to be the case, but who knows. So far so good with the battery for me.

I've been looking for a new phone for when i get to switch at the start of October, i'm looking at the X10 Mini Pro, just 2 quick questions.

1. Does all android software work on ALL android phones?
2. I've held the phone for myself, but it was a dummy model. To anyone with that phone, how is the size for overall use as a smart phone?

Yep, that's the first thing I changed heh. set it as low as possible..

cutting off GPS seems to have made the biggest difference so far..

Probably, I don't think the vertical slider is generally a very popular form factor. I think I've heard RIM might be working on one too, but you're best bet is probably a Pre.

I really like portrait sliders. Its too bad the pre is about the only attractive one.
Its a hard formfactor for sure.

Why? The worst bet is a Pre as it's old and outdated and Palm is in the middle of a transition with new models to be released...soonish. The Blackberry slider looks nice and runs the very much awesome OS 6, and the Moto slider should be a solid mid range Android offering.

I find the form factor silly personally.

More information has surfaced about Samsung's newest Android device--not a phone but a PMP.

According to speculation on various Korean websites, the YP-MB2 will be similar to the Galaxy S, minus phone functionality, and will retail for about $250. Here are the specs:

  • 3MP Camera
  • Android 2.1
  • 1GHz CPU
  • 4-in. Super AMOLED display
  • Digital Compass
  • GPS
  • DMB (a system for broadcasting radio and television to phones)
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Full Market access

Ooh, I like. Especially that last point.

Ok, so I got a promotion at work and as a bonus my company is paying for me to get a new smartphone. I have a rooted G1 (I fondly refer to it as the OG1) and will stay on TMo. So, Vibrant now or wait for the new HTC HSPA+ phone?

GAF, FINAL JUDGEMENT

I quite like my new Captivate, so I say go for it. The more I use this thing, the more I'm just falling in love with it. The new Galaxy S phones are quite awesome. Hell, the screen alone is practically worth it, let alone the rest of the awesome hardware.

The problem with waiting, is that you will always be waiting. I mean, sure you could wait for a while for the new "XXX" to come out. But by the time "XXX" is released, you'll probably start thinking you should wait for "YYY" to come out. I used to have that problem. I could never pull the trigger on anything. I shopped for ages, it seemed, and could never decide on the "perfect" item to buy. But "perfect" in the electronics world, especially cell phones, has a lifespan of around 4 seconds these days. Might as well just get a great phone now, and start using and enjoying it, rather than constantly wait for the "next great thing" to come along.

Posting from my Galaxy S.
Awesome interface, awesome screen.
(Disclaimer: haven't seen iPhone 4 yet)

Going to try the desktop software with my win7-64 desktop and see what the problem is...

No all android software does not run on all phones. There are some apps that will only run on android 2.1 devices and above. The mini pro runs on 1.6 so for example the official twitter app will not appear on the market on your phone. As for the size of the handset its ok actually. Only areas it suffers in are web browsing and media viewing due to the inherently small screen size. My advice is go into a local retailer and ask to see a demo model.

Gah... it seems the SGS desktop software (Kies) problem is real afterall:lol
I'm on Win7 32 bit and Kies mode only works once.

You still can connect it with mass storage mode with no problem, but you'll lose some features from Kies.
Just make sure you mount the storage to your PC after you connect it in mass storage mode. Do this by bringing down the top menu and click on the USB connection.

Too bad... But I think I can live with this for a while...

screen is actually pretty damn efficient (super amoled vs lcd).

Droid is a different network - and it seems there is a slight bug / issue with Android in general and using auto switching GSM /WCDMA. If you force one or the other, (I am WCDMA - aka 3G) only, battery life is supposed to be much better.

I can't confirm, but yesterday I had poor battery life for being in idle/standby...and it was nearly all due to "cell standby". Contrast this to what I thought was exceptional battery life using wifi, screen on and heavy use - hours straight.

The way to see how your battery is being used: from home screen tap left button capacitive button (looks like lines) click settings\about phone\battery use

this lists the percent the display and each program has taken down the battery.

Here is the "fix" if you want to try (assuming the call standby is the big drain when not in use...like me)

http://androidforums.com/nexus-one/38267-battery-life-fix.html

I use anycut, and can easily switch the phone back to automode (areas without good 3G)

A quick recap for those who want to connect their Captivate to a PC - and also enable tethering no rooting:

1. download and install samsung usb drivers (you want this for mass storage anyway):
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/d...T&prd_mdl_name=SGH-I897&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

2. on phone, go to settings\applications\development\USB debugging check on/enabled

3. now plug in phone - computer should install device/drivers automatically.

4a. If you want to drag and drop onto internal memory or sd card, on your phone pull down the notification and click "USB connected" which will enable mass storage (mounts both internal and SD. This allows drag and drop.

4b. For tethering. Downlad PDAnet for android. Install on PC, follow directions. When your phone is connected, you should be in debug mode (as above) but don't enable the mass storage.

5. After the above is done - you can now plug in phone by USB or BT and a notification will pop up on PC allowing tether - or select the phone notification to mount and have mass storage

Almost sold on getting a Captivate as my next phone..

Would be sometime in the fall most likely, are there any other, more powerful Android phones set to launch on AT&T by the end of the year?

Also, one of the other things holding me back from getting an Android instead of an iPhone is that I love my iPod Touch and I'm already familiar with it that the jump to iPhone wouldn't be as drastic. Not too mention the money I've spent on apps for it that wouldn't be able to be used on an Android device (even if they are available for Android as well).

So.. convince me that it's worth it to get the Captivate (or an even better future AT&T Android phone!)!

If you are planning to go to an ATT android device by the end of the year I can't imagine a better choice than the Captivate right now. It is the highest specced phone out there (CPU/GPU combo) and is slated for a 2.2 update. ATT has had a terrible android track record...yet the Captivate is a top-notch pick regardless of carrier.

The next step would be some sort of LTE enabled, 3.0 phone. That will be awhile. Phones just go out of date quickly no matter what. You can always just wait for the next best...but now is as close to ideal a time for an ATT android - that being the captivate.

I transitioned from the world of iPhones to Android with the Captivate. The process was actually quite painless. Only took an afternoon or so for me to get the basics figured out, and to start feeling really comfortable. Really a great phone.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'm sold.

Few concerns:

The Engadget review I read said that the battery life is kind of low. Anyone with a Captivate/Vibrant notice this?

They also mentioned that the phone seemed kind of slow for it's processor. Is that just Engadget being picky or is that the case as well?

I suggest reading some other reviews. Most say the opposite - great battery life for a smart phone, some even pitting it better than an iphone 4 (I find this hard to believe in real world due to true android multi tasking). Settings and background make a huge difference - see my post above about battery.

Regarding speed, can't comment as I don't have a good frame of reference. However it seems very very snappy to me. Touchwiz launcher (I think has some little lags here or there) is easily by passed by Launcher pro, which is really fast. Get rid of live wall paper and faster yet. All benchies put it at the top. I ran an 720p mkv video (supported in stock video player!) and it played perfect.

From techfortune/cnn -

"Battery life: (1500mA battery) This was on par, if not better, than other Android devices like the Nexus One, Aria and the Incredible -- probably close to the iPhone. Much better than the EVO"

also they said "This is the fastest gaming Android device available. Here's a benchmarking video from Android and Me demonstrating the capabilities of the PowerVR SGX540 (which is double the speed of the current generation PowerVR SGX530 GPU of high end Android devices and the SGX 535 of the iPhone's A4)."

So i got a palm pre a month ago and i like the phone BUT dont like how the app support for it is basically dead.My sis is planning on getting a phone and she just wants something touch based and basic so im thinking about giving her my pre and getting the Motorola milestone since the android market -mainly software for me - is growing.Should i go ahead and get the milestone /droid or is a newer one ins the works for canada?

The phone has a tendency to lag/stall at times, some worse than others. If you look on xda or modaco you'll find fixes for it, although its not a sure fire thing. Hopefully its somethin Samsung will address in future updates as it shouldn't be happening on this hardware.

Its touchwiz. Use launcher pro and zero stalls. Fast.

This phone kills the others in benchmarks. Check out this

I bought a captivate yesterday, I guess I'm cool now.

I did the same and thought the same till:

The GPS couldn't find me
I couldn't get it to sync with my itunes
It wouldn't send images/video to my wife's iPhone
The fuckin buttons on the face stay lit for a nanosecond.. was this thing not meant to be used at night?
Other small problems.

I took it back and they swapped it for my iPhone4 back. I really want to like the android platform but till the phone can do what the iPhone does with out a problem I can't justify the same price and lacking features of the phone. I did swap the phone for another one just to make sure. The free google nav was great but once I left 3g I had no GPS and it really gimped the phone.

Why did you think an android phone would sync with itunes? As far as sending pictures that's nothing to do with android. Not sure what the issue was there.

I've got a question regarding the Galaxy S - is it just me or is it missing a hardware search and home button?
Holding down the menu button brings up search and the middle button acts as home.

I thought the iphone lacked the ability to send/receive files via Bluetooth?

Maybe you should have spent 5 minutes looking up the answers to your "problems", and researched what you're buying next time. Why did you even swtich from the iPhone 4 if you didn't plan on figuring things out? Once you get used to Apple's ecosystem, going to another platform requires a bit more patience.
Sorry, your complaints just seem as ridiculous as if someone went to buy an iPhone 3GS last year, and returned the next day complaining about the lack of multitasking.

I agree it literally sounds like he had the phone for half an hour and then returned it for his iPhone.

Got the captivate, took out all the useless atat apps, my gps runs perfect, im happy.

So, today is officially my LAST DAY to return my iPhone 4. This past week, I went and bought a Droid Incredible and signed up for Verizon so I could do a full on legitimate comparison between the two devices before I officially decided to dump AT&T and the iPhone.

Here's where I'm at. Any advice would be appreciated...
- iPhone 4 battery life seems to be much better than the Incredible
- Droid customization kicks the iPhone's ass
- Droid third party apps mean little to no restriction, which I like compared to Apple's handcuffs
- iPhone notifications for Facebook and Gmail seem to be much better than the Droid. I'm not given notifications when friends post things on my Facebook wall or send me messages. I'm also not receiving a numerical update on my Gmail when emails arrive. Both of these are major bummers.
- iPhone web shortcuts on the homescreen look much nicer than the Droid web shortcuts. Take the NeoGaf web app for example. It's just much easier to tell which shortcut I'm clicking on with the iPhone.
- All of my music is on iTunes, which means I'm already set for the iPhone. Transferring this over to the Droid Incredible means a manual shift mostly. This isn't really difficult mind you. But, I've got to go buy a much bigger SD card, as I've got the 32gb iPhone 4.
- iPhone 4 records HD video. Incredible doesn't right now. Maybe if I stay Droid I should go get a Droid X? BTW, upcoming firmware updates don't mean shit to me if they're not available right now for comparison sake.
- Incredible is MUCH lighter than the iPhone 4 - this is plus
- Proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 is currently broken, forcing hangups left and right when I'm still on a fucking call. This blows.
- Foursquare app on Droid kicks the Foursqaure app on iPhone's ass.
- Voice to text is built into the Incredible versus having to use Dragon Dictation on the iPhone 4. When you're driving and trying to send a critical work email, Droid wins every time.

There are other things I'll post if they come to mind. But, I'm starting to lean towards returning the iPhone to the Apple store today. If I do, I'm outta my 2-year contract I signed on iPhone 4 launch day and officially locked into Verizon. Otherwise, I go and return the Incredible to Verizon some time this coming week and keep the iPhone.

It's Decision Day...AHHHHHHHHHHH.

I think the Incredible has bad battery life in general a better comparison probably would have been the Droid or Droid X to the iPhone 4, I get numerical updates on the Gmail app on my Droid X, but I'm also using the LauncherPro app.

I have a iPod Touch and a Droid X and the web shortcuts are the same for me? I have the NeoGAF app on both and they look the same, it's the same logo, probably varies on the site though.

Incredible is getting a 720p recording update probably next month with Froyo but the Droid X already does it out of the box.

Ordered an Evo 4G yesterday from Wirefly. They said it's a 3-4 week backorder :scared:

The phone is a damn Ferrari, so I'm willing to wait, but I can't believe it could actually be 4 weeks.

Any advice on which Android phone to grab in Ontario, Canada?

This is coming from someone whose Telus contract is almost up. My Blackberry 8330 Curve has served me well these past few years, but it's time for a new toy.

I'm open to switching providers.

Do you mean that the gmail icon on the homescreen doesn't display the number of unread emails? If so, there are two solutions for that:

1. Switch to LauncherPro instead of the Sense home, but obviously, you lose the Sense widgets.
2. Get Gmail Unread Count from the market. This is a widget that will look just like the Gmail icon but will show the unread count. It's free, btw.

Sorry, I should've said "the next Pre" or something to that effect. You are correct in that the current pre is pretty outdated, but Palm seems to be the only one committed to that form factor. Who knows what is going to come of the Moto slider.

So bummed that I haven't heard a word about the Sprint Galaxy S (Epic). I played really want an android phone with a hardware keyboard and Sprint seems to be the only ones committed to that. I played around with some older Samsung Android handsets and I really liked the feel of the keyboard, plus the UI wasn't really all that bad. My iphone 3G contract ends in a week and I'd really like to move on but I'm in a rough spot right now. Just release the damn phone Sprint.

Listening to the Engadget podcast..
They raise a really interesting point.
Now that the Nexus One is done with, there isn't a flagship phone running stock Android.

I hope Google builds a partnership with Dell. Their phones are sleek as fuck. Still Google needs a flagship phone and a new one quick with 1.5ghz and 2ghz around the corner. I really don't want to purchase anymore skinned phones after Gingerbread.

I reckon they'll go for a 'third party exclusive' phone come 3.0, something to showcase the new os and features.

I'd say you should've stuck with it for more than a few days, but since you couldn't figure out that itunes doesn't sync with every mobile device, I don't think suggesting that you root it to make adjustments would be a good idea.

For others, there's a way to fix the GPS here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030 and you can remove ATT apps by rooting and installing Titanium Backup. Removing ATT apps will help solve a lot of the lag problems, but there's another (riskier) mod to fix it and make it one of the fastest phones on the market. The only downside is that it can possibly shorten your SD card's lifespan, limits the space available for apps (I think it was around 150mb) and of course there's always a chance to brick your device.

Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725555

Speed hack: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724251

I have not tried the speed hack because I hear Froyo is coming this year, and I have a feeling it'll solve the problem. The lag hasn't bothered me very much, though.

I find a reboot of the phone often solves the lag, though it tends to slowly return the longer the phone is left on. Tried touchwiz and launcher pro but still the same.

I'm hoping Samsung tidy up the firmware in future updates, or froyo will solve the problem. Its a beast of a phone but the software needs some refinement.

Has anyone been able to get the Captivate for less than $500 being out of contract? I had heard it was supposed to be $350, but I see $500 everywhere.
